TALYCAFN HOTEL LICENCE CONFIRMED…
TALYCAFN HOTEL LICENCE CON- FIRMED BY THE, COMMITTEE. The first, meeting of the Licensing Com- mittee for the county of Carnarvon, took place on the 20th, when there, was a full attendance of members, under the presi- dency of the chairman, Mr J. E. Greaves (Lord Lieutenant). A NEVIN LICENCE. On the application of Mr A. Owen, the Committee confirmed the removal of the licence of the Newbown Arms, Nevin, to premises. TALYCAFN FERRY HOTEL. Mr F. E. Smith (instructed by Messrs Carter, Vincent, and 010..) applied for a confirma, tionof the grant of a, seven, days' licence to. the Ferry Hotel, Talycafn, as to which there, has been much controversy in the district. Mr R. S. Chamberlain asked for leave to oppose the application on behalf of the licensee of an hotel oni the .other side of the river. Mr J. J. Marks said that he appeared to oppose the confirmation on behalf of most of the public bodies connected with the district, whereupon, Mr Chamberlain intimated that hei would be content if M:r Marks called his witnesses. Mr Smith said that the. licensee was Griffith Roberts, and the hotel was owned by Mrs Gough. To the court below an application was made for a new licence in form, though in substance. it was for get- ting the benefits of a, full seven days', licence. The hotel was a, new house,' erected on the site of a much older house, which at one time was in the enjoyment of afull seven days' licence, but. this was allowed to fall into1 desuetude,, and upon the new hotel being put, up the require- ments for a full licence became very press- ing. There wa.s a large amount of per- fectly legitimate traffic in the Vale of Con- wia-y on Sundays, for which a reasonable) provision should be made, but there was no intention to make the house a place for Sunday drinking, and in the event of the licence being granted the opening house would be confined to 12 noon till eight o'clock in the evening on Sundays. The decision of the Conway Bench in granting the licence had provoked a, cer- amount cf adverse criticism, and even the County Council had. in a very uncalled-for manner, as he thought, anticipated the decision which the Licensing Committee might arrive at. The licensee gave evidence touching the complaints received by him from visitors that they could not. entertain their friends at the hotel on Sundays under present conditions. Hardly anybody called for drink only, and hei would never en- courage Sunday drinking. Seven coach-drivers and other witnesses having been examined with the view of showing that the .other hotel afforded no stabling accommodation. Mr Marks said, that he opposed the ap- plication on grounds of public policy. Additional facilities would be contrary to the whole spirit of a country for which a, special Act cf Parliament had been passed. Mr J. Burgess, licensee of the Talycafn Hotel, which stands in Denbighshire side of the river, said that in a short time ac- commodation for more than twenty horses. Superintendent Rees (Conway) said that. the Ferrv Hotel was away from, the main road, and therefore difficult of police supervision. Questioned, by Mr Smith, the officer said that he was instructed by the Chief [ Constable to appear to' give evidence. Counsel: Youi have told the licensee that in your private. opinion hei ought to get seven doys' licence ?Nothing of the kind.—Will you swear it? Certainly. Counsel raised the question of Mr Marks's, locus standi. He understood at the outset that that gentleman appeared for the police, but it now transpired that the police did not oppose. After further discussion the Committee followed to deal with houses which claim compensation. The. reports from the Portmadoc and Carnarvon licensing justices were, con- sidered by the Committee, with reference to. the renewal of six licences, and it was decided to renew them all. The houses are the Princes of Wales, Quarrymen's Arms, Portmadoc; Bull's Head, Pen- caenewydd; Prince: of Wales and Vaynol Arms, Ebenezer; and, Railway Inn, Llanwynda.
A DENBIGH SUCCESS.
A DENBIGH SUCCESS. We, Llandudno, people are; always in- terested in our neighbours over in Den- bigh. Mrs L. Morris lives at 5, Panton Hall, Denbigh. She says "For years I suffered from nervousness and other signs of kidney pills, have helped me wonder- fully. I used to wake up in the. mornings with a, dull, heavy pain in my head, and I was so dizzy that I could scarcely col- lect myself, and was afraid to move. My appetite was poor, and what little food, I did eat didn't seem to nourish me; it lay like a, weight .on my chest. Whsn I saiti down it, seemed as though the chair would sink with me, and when I moved sharply a, pain like a knife-thrust darted through me. My nerves ware in such a state that I started at the lea.st sound. "Nothing has. helped, me like Doan's backache kidney pills have. The first few doses acted like magic; and by con- tinuing with the medicine, I was cured. I am enjoying good health, and I can speak highly of Doan's pills. (Signed) Mrs L. Morris." If you are ill, write and fully describe your case to us. We shall be pleased to give you the best advice in our power, free of charge. You can depend upon your letter being treated in strictest con- fidence. Doan's backache kidney pills are two shillings .and ninepence per box (six boxes for thirteen shillings and nine- pence.)
