Up the Conway Valley and to…
Up the Conway Valley and to Snowdon. Visitors to Llandudno who can spare an extra week or so should not omit to explore the many pleasant spots abounding in the beautiful Vale of Conway. As many probably know, the River Conway is navigable for about 14 miles, a.nd every day, a.s the tide serves, a compact little steamer carries passengers as far as the pretty village of Trefriw. The starting point generally is Deganwy. When the tide is full and the country luxuriant with summer foliage, this excursion is most delightful. Soon after leaving Talycafn, the ancient Church of Caerhun is seen on the right bank, direetly after Rhaiadr Jlawr and Dolgarrog Waterfalls, then the Chalybeate Wells, and soon he steamer is moored opposite the hotel. Those who prefer terra firma will probably take advantage of the railway up the Vale of Conway. The mountain views are most extensive, and all appear on the right of the line. They include Talyfan, Foel Fras Moel Eilio, Penllithrig, and Camedd Llewelyn. Close by Talycafn Station a bridge has been con- structed across the river, and from thence a pleasant afternoon's walk may be taken through the village of Roewen, over the hills to Llanfairfechan or Aber. Llanrwst is a good market town, and from here omnibuses run to Trefriw. Gwydr Castle, about half, a-mile away, is well worth a visit. The next station, Bettta-y-Coed, is one of the most lovely spots in North Wales. Here the Rivers Conway and Llugwy meet. It is a favourite halting-place for anglers, artists, and tourists of all descriptions The chief attractions consist of the splendid river aJld sylvan scenery. The Fairy Glen, the Conway Falls, the Miners' Bridge, and the Swallow Falls all combine to lare the visitors to linger here. On the hill stands Llyn Elsie, a beautifully situated lake, where fishing is obtained. The hotel accommodation at Bettws-y-Coed is ample. Pursuing our way by coach from the Royal Oak Hotel, a charming drive of six miles brings us to Capel Curig, having on our way passed the Miners' Bridge and the Swallow Falls. In a few minutes Moel Siabod appears on the left, and the monarch of Welsh mountains is seen soon after. There is capital fishing in the lakes near the Royal Hotel and the village is finely situated for ascending Moel Siabod and the Glyders From Capel Curig, by the Holyhead Road, to Bangor is a grand ride, through wild Kant Francon, and as the immense slate quarries at Bethesda. Proceeding in the opposite direction from Capel Curig, past the lakes after a four miles' drive, Peny- gicryd (made famous by Charles Kingsley). is reached. The roads here diverge, one leading down the beautiful Vale of Gwynant to Beddgelert (eight miles further), and the other through the renowned Pass of Llanberis, the grandest scenery in Wales, under Snowdon on the left, and the Glyders on the right. Llanberis. nestling with its lakes at the feat of Snowdon, is a most popular and justly famed resort. From here Snowdon (3573ft.) may be ascended either on foot or by the new mountain railway. There is an hotel at the summit. Descend on foot on southern slope to Saowdon Station (Narrow Guage line). Returning to the railway at Bettwt-y-Coed, the valley of the Lledr is traversed, and we soon come to Pont-y- Pant, and a lovelier situation than this cannot be imagined. From here to the populous mining village of Blaenau Festiniog is only six and a half miles, the railway running through a tunnel some two miles long. From Blaenau Festiniog the Great Western line runs to Bala and Dolgdley, and the Narrow Gauge (or "Toy") Railway also starts. A journey along this curious little line should not be missed. The roate runs along the hillsides overlooking the Vale of Maentwrog, through Tanybwlch, and on to Portmadoc. A pleasant drive of eight miles may be taken from Portmadoc through the famed Pass of Aberglaslyn to Beddgelert, a charming village on the south side of Snowdon, which may be easily ascended from here, or a drive or walk can be taken to Snowdon Station fo Carnarvon.
Around the Coast to Cardigao…
Around the Coast to Cardigao Bay and down the Dee Valley. The coast line between Llandudno, Carnarvon, and Barmouth is full of beauty, and tourists should take an opportunity of traversing it and staying here and there Taking the train we come, first of a.ll to Conway, the oldest walled town in the Principality, the ancient Elizabethan palace (Plas Mawr), the old church, the grand old castle and the walls are full of interest. Pentnaenmawr, the next station, is a modern water- ing place with a good beach and charming mountain walks. Three miles further we come to Llanfairfechan, another pretty bathing resort, splendidly situated for mountain climbing On the left after leaving the station, the mansion of Mr. Sydney Platt is noticed. Passing Aber Station (a capital spot whence to ascend Carnedd Llewelyn), after running through Lord Penrhyn's Park, the city of Bangor is reached, and the cathedral and Menai Straits claim attention. Coach tours can be taken from Bangor to the heart of Wild Wales. Proceeding to Garth Ferry (one mile from the station) a steamer takes passengers across the Straits to Beaumaris, a famous watering place in Anglesea where there are great attractions for yachting men The old castle and Sir Richard Bulkeley's Park sheuld be seen. Visitors should take a drive along the Straits to Menai Bridge; the suspension bridge, and tubular bridge connecting the mainland and Anglesea are to be seen; across the former the road runs back to Bangor. Proceeding by rail, half-an-hour's journey along th Straits brought us to the ancient town of Carnarvon where the historic castle must be explored. Joining the Cambrian Railway at Afon wen Junction, we soon reach that rising seaside town, Pwllheli. where there is an excellent beach. In the other direction we reach the ancient town of Harlech A further ran along the coast brings us to Barmouth, a fashionable and beautifully situated watering place. The railway crosses the estuary of the Mawddach by a bridge two miles long. and winds along the estuary, through Penmaenpool tQ DolgeHey, a beautiful sylvan spot from whence Cader Idris may be easily scaled. The Great Western Railway hence runs to Bala, where good lake fishing may be had. The ride from here along the Dec Valley to the lovely Vale oj JAangollen cannot be beaten for exquisite scenery.
