With the discovery of the cinemato- graph was ushered in a form of entertain- ment which has now became an established factor in the regular pastimes of the people. It beguiles the leisure of all classes. And anyone studying the faces, wreathed in smiles, of the audience as they leave the Public Hall could bear testimony ito the efficacy of a good laugh for driving dull care away. It is the invariable custom to finish the performance with-a roaring comic, as this sends tie patrons home in a pleasant frame of mind. PENRHOS COLLEGE—Excellent pro- gress is being made bv the contracter, Mr. Oswald Jones, with the work of erecting the Junior School in the grounds of Penrhos College for Girls. This will be a worthy addi- tion to the noble pil<^ of buildings. Tt will be remembered that the foundation stone of the new school was laid by the Chancellor of the Exchequer in September. John Jones, who, after thirty-four eventful years of missionary life among the natives of Ivhassia Hills, has returned to the old country and taken up his residence at Colwyn Bay, is about to give a lecture on hi.; experiences in the important mission field in India, where he laboured so long and so lovingly. Air. Jones is a pleasing speaker on ether subjects also, but he is never more happy than when describing the manners and customs of the singularly interesting people to whom. in their darkness, he carried the light of the Gospel. The whole window is de- voted—one might say consecrated—to Movril, that ever-ready help to the man who is cold or hungry or both. POPULAR LECTURE.—By special per- mission, the lecture on Friday evening, at the Victoria Pavilion, by Mr. A. B. Mai- den, F.R.G.S., will be illustrated by cine- matograph. WALES WOMEN'S TEMPER ANCE ASSOCIATION.—In connection with the Colwyn Bay branch and its Snowdrop Band, a very pleasant social gathering wac held at Salem on Friday. Wil liams, Miss Davies (Glasmor), Miss Noble, and Miss Williams (BodgwyneddV, assisted bv Mrs. Pryce Williams, Mrs. Davies (Benar), Mrs. Lewis (Roumania Housed, and Miss Williams iBclawen). ABERGELE. A GENIUS.—I am egotistical enough to believe that I can spot a genius if he happens to speak in my hearing for about ten minutes. I saw and heard one on Fri- day evening at the Ship Cafe in the per- son of Professor Ivor Williams, of Bangor, who, under the auspices of the Cafe Liter- ary Society, delivered a delightfully inter- I esting lecture on Geiriau Llafar Gwlad (colloquial Welsh). In the absence of Sir Herbert Roberts, M.P. (who was detained in the House of Commons, but who arrived later) the Rev. W. G. Owen (Llifon) pre- sided over a large and enthusiastic gather- ing. Professor Williams' lecture is one to listen to and not to be reported in English. I couldn't perform the latter task if I were to attempt it. Others who added their quota to the list of Welsh jaw-breakers in daily use were Messrs. Edward Ellis, J. Williams, M.A., G. T. Evans, J. 11. Lewis, and the Chairman. Sir Herbert Roberts entered the room while Llifon was speak- ing, and he was accorded a rousing recep- tion on the strength of what we had read tm the evening newspapers of what -had taken place in the House of Commons that afternoon. Sir Herbert, in apologising for not being 'present in time to occupy the chair, explained briefly what had taken place in St. Stephen's that afternoon. But the Cafe lecture-room was not the place to talk politics. He felt sure the audience had enjoyed to the full the lecture deliver- ed to them by Professor Williams, who was undoubtedly in the front rank of Wales's young men of genius. (Applause.) He hoped the lecture would be the means of making everyone present realise more than ever the incomparable beauty of the dear old language of Wales. (Cheers.) On the motion of the Chairman, Professor Williams was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for his splendid lecture. WEDDING.—The marriage of Mr. Edward Williams, RQse Hill, LIanddoget, and Miss Maggie Jones, School House, Llanfair Talhaiarn, was solemnised at the Abergele C.M. Chapel on Saturday mom. ing, the Rev. Morgan Davies officiating. The bridesmaid was Miss Sally Jones, while Mr. H. Francis Williams acted as best man. LECTURE.—Even a blinding hailstorm cannot damp the ardour of those Abergele people who are always keen on hearing a good lecture. And this fact was exempli- fied on Thursday evening, when a large number of enthusiasts braved the elements in wending their way to the spacious Wes- leyan Schoolroom to listen to the Rev. David Morris deliver his new lecture on Hugh Price Hughes." I should not be exaggerating if I said that the lecture was one of the most captivatingly interesting ones ever heard in the town. Mr. Morris kept his hearers spellbound from the be- ginning to the end of his discourse. Mr. II. E. Prichard, who occupied the chair, and said it would be educationally bene- ficial to the country's young men and young women were they to take advantage ot every opportunity given them of attending elevat- ing lectures of the kind they had listened to that evening. That, at any rate, was his own personal experience. He had no hesitation in saying that he had benefited more by listening to lectures delivered on the lives of great men than he did by read- ing voluminous and costly biographies. HARDY, IlURKYINCi HARRIERS.— There's no holding these Abergele prodigies of pace and stamina. They run like hares —and thrive on it. I would rather board them for a week than a month of Sundays. On Thursday afternoon they had a splen- did .spin of something under five miles. Ellis was elected member of the managing committee of that institution in the place of Mr. T. II. Owain- Jones. The voting was by ballott, and Mr. Ellis obtained a large majority over Mr. W. P. Morris and Mr. D. C. Roberts. Mr. D. THOMAS —It is with the greatest pleasure that ] report the interesting fact that Mr. David Thomas, Groeslwyd, Aber- gele, who served his articles with Mr. E. A. Crabbe, solicitor, Abergele and Colwyn Bay, has just passed the final examination of the Incorporated Law Society, which entitles him to be admitted a solicitor of the High Court. Abergele is proud of him—proud of him because, without any influence and financial assistance, he has eilmbed from the ranks to the top of the ladder through his own exertions uid the unstinted profes- sional help of Mr. Crabbe. THE VICAR of Abergele (Rev. T. Jones, M.A.), addressed a large gathering of men at the Parish Church on Sunday afternoon. These. Sunday afternoon addresses to men only during the winter months are becoming very popular and are apparently dqing a great amount of good.

NEW IN-DUSTRY.-On Monday morning the new steamer of the Aluminium Corpora- tion made her maiden voyage to Conway with a load of Aluminium ore. She sailed alongside the lighter, which recently arrived in the hajrbour, and discharged her cargo there during the greatei part of the following day. The establishment of this new service, which spells increased activity for the port of Conway, is a matter of gratification'to all interested in the progress of this new and important industry. LECTURE.—On Monday evening a highly interesting lecture on John Gibson," the eminent sculptor, was given by the Rev. B. Menai Francis, to the members of the Seion Congregational Literan Society. Mr. E. R. Davies presided. ST. JOHN'S LITERARY SOCIETY.— The second gathering of the above Society was held at the English Wesleyan School- room on Thursday, when a very interest- ing and instructive lantern lecture was given by the Rev. W. Mellor on Rome. There was a good muster of members present, despite the inclement weather. At the con- clusion a hearty vote of thanks was ac- corded Mr. Mellor. Mr. E. Loyd Jones, who took charge of the lantern, and Mr. Theo. [ones, the Chairman, on the motion of Mr. NN-. A. Evans, seconded by Mr. Geo. Edwards, of Llandudno Junction. At the next meeting, on December 1st, a debate will take place on "Ought the Daylight Saving Bill to become law? CHURCH MEN'S GUILD.—The officers of the Church Men's Guild are as follows: President, the Vicar (the Rev. J. W. Ro- berts) vice-presidents, Rev. J. Davies, Messrs. James Porter, Owen Rowland, J.P., Dr. R. Arthur-Prichard, J.P., A. G. Kaye, Llewelyn Lloyd, William Thomas, D. Rowlands, and Hmnphrey Jones. The hon. treasurer is Mr. F. C. Jones, and the hon. secretary Mr. T. R. Hammond. Last night (Wednesday), the President gave a very interesting and instructive lecture on "• Disestablishment." THE CHORAL SOCIETY.—The prac- tices of the Choral Society are being well attended, and the members are making steady progress with the work they have in hand. There is still room for new mem- bers, and the Secretary (Mr. R. T. Hughes) will be pleased to receive names. BILLIARD HANDICAP.—The Christmas biljliard ha-ndicap has .commenced alt the Liberal Club. Quite a large number of members have entered, and some valuable prizes are offered. THE MUNICIPAL ELECTION.—Owing to the elevation of Councillor Dr. M. J. Morgan to the aldermanic chair of the borough, it became necessary to elect an- other Councillor. On the 18th November Messrs. J. P. Griffiths, Regent House, Ed- ward Jones, Deganwy, and Robert John- son, Llandudno Junction, were nominated for the seat. On the following day the Mayor (Councillor Henry Jones) sat at the Guildhall to decide as to the validity of the nominations, and it was announced that Messrs. Edward Jones and Robert Johnson had withdrawn their candidature. Mr. J. 1'. Griffiths will thus be returned unop- posed on Saturday next. Mr. Griffiths, who has done yeoman service on the cor- porate body in previous years, will be an undoubted acquisition to that body. He is a ztaious Liberal and Nonconformist. Literary Society on Monday night, a debate took place on the question Which is the best place to live a religious life the town or J countrv." Miss A. Rowlands, Manchester House, honoured the town, and. Miss L. Jones, N.P. Bank, upheld the country. Several members took .part in what proved to be a very interesting discussion.

I GLAN CONWAY. CHURCH SUNDAY SCHOOL.—On Fri- day next, at 6.30 p.m., the annual distri- bution of prizes and competitive meeting will be held in the schoolroom, in connec- tion with the Church Sunday School. The entrance charge will be 3d. each, and child- ren over 12 one penny. There will be many competitions open to the world, such as best speech on "Singng," answering six impromptu questions, giving plural of words (Welsh) and translating. A WORK OF ART.—The applique bread- spread worked by the Women's Guild has been won by Mr. G. F. Jeffcoat, Buxton, and the proceeds given to the Church Room Fund.

LLANDUDNO. FIELD CLUB EXHIBITION.—A four days' loan exhibition in connection with the Llandudno and District Field Club was opened on Tuesday in the Town Hall, Llan- dudno Mr. L. H. Edminson, M.A., who presided, said the object of the exhibition was to stir up the people of Llandudno to take a more lively interest in the club. Its main object was educative, but it had two subsidiary objects—namely, to cultivate social feeling, and, secondly, to initiate some original work; to do pioneer work so far as their finances would allow. The Hon. Mrs. Henry Lloyd Mostyn, in declar- ing th? exhibition open, congratulated the club upon the valuable work it had already achieved. The hall had been beautifully decorated with flowers sent by Lady Augusta Mostyn, and the exhibits, which were in- teresting, were of a geological, botanical, (antiquarian, and miscellaneous character. Special demonstrations of micoscopical ob. jects were given by Dr. Carter (Deganwy) and Mr. V illoughby Gardner, F.L.S (De- ganwy). Lord Mostyn is the president, Mr Mr. L. S. Underwood hon. secretary. MOTORIST FINED.—On Monday, at the Police Court, Henry C. Kinaston, 23, Devonshire-road, Ixuidon, was fined 5s. and costs for driving a motor-car near Lfandud- no after lighting-up time, without a rear light. The defendant did not appear, but sent a letter admitting the. offence. THE LATE IR. J. O. THO-NIAS.kt the Police Court, on Monday, Dr. Dalton re- ferred to the loss the Bench had sustained by the recent death of Mr. J. O. Thomas. Mr. Thomas was a most painstaking magi- strate, and attended the courts very regu- larly till his health broke down. It was the wish of the Bench that the Clerk should convey to Mr. Thomas's relatives an ex- pression of the sympathy and sorrow of the Bench. Mr. Chamberlain, on behalf of the solicitors practising in the court, said he had been associated with Mr. Thomas in business matters for many years, and he could only say that a more straihgtforward man than Mr. Thomas had never departed from that town. The sincere and genuine sympathy of the bar went out to Mr. Thomas's aged father. Deputy Chief Con- stable Rees associated himself with the ex- pressions of regret and sympathy from the Bench and Bar. Mr. Porter, Magistrates' C lerk, speaking on behalf of the officials of the court, said their predominant feel- ing towards Mr. Thomas was one of re- spect. CAERSALEM MISSION.—Under the di- rection of Prof. Bryan Warhurst, of Rhvl, a concert took place at the Town Hall on Thursday evening in aid of the Caersalem Welsh Wesleyan mission, Cwlach-street, and was a financial and musical success. Mr. Ernest E. Bone, J.P. (Chairman of the Llandudno Urban Dsitrict Council), occu- pied the chair, and the event was conducted by Mr. R. H. Thomas. The artistes were Madam Gertrude Humphreys, soprano; Miss Marian Davies, mezzo-soprano; Mr. I Evan Lewis, tenor; Mr. Frank Nicholson, baritone; Miss Nancy Thomas, violinist and Master Robert Hugh Jones, reciter. Mr. Warhurst acted as accompanist.

PENMACHNO. TEMPERANCE.—A meeting of the North Wales Women's Temperance Association was held at Bethania Chapel on Thursday evening, under the presidency of Mr. T. J. James, Bryn Salem, when addresses were delivered by Mrs. T. C. Roberts, Mrs. Row- lands, and Miss Jones, Ty'nvcaeau, all of Llanrwst. Miss Annie Evans, Bion Dderw, Mrs. T. C. Ro- berts, and the White Ribbon Choir gave songs. SALEM LITERARY SOClETY.-A meeting held under the auspices of the above Society at Salem (C.M.) Chapel on Friday evening. The Rev. T. J. NORTH WALES QUARRY'MEN'S I UNION.—A public meeting, held under the auspices of the North Wales Quarrymen's Union, was held at the Public Hall on Saturday evening. The chair was taken by the Rev. T. Cwilym Roberts, Eglwys Bach. The meeting opened with a song by Mr. D. Pryce Davies. Addresses were delivered by the Chairman Mr. -T. J. Evans, the Secretary of the Festiniog branch of the Union Mr. E. Davies Jones, solicitor; Mr Owen Jones, Blaenau Festiniog the Treas- urer of the Quarrymen's Union, and the Rev. R. Silyn Roberts, Blaenau Festiniog. The object of the meeting was to get more to join the Union. It is said that a similar meeting will be held at Cwm in the near future. Mr .R. T. Jones, the Secretary of the Union, was unavoidably absent, as he was in Scotland sitting on the Royal Com- mission on Mines.

TREFRIW. Pi. RSONAL.—The Rev. Henry Jones was in Anglesey last Sunday, where he was engaged as special preacher at a preaching meeting. Mr. and Mrs. Williams, Blaen- nant, have removed to NVelbv Cottage, Trefriw. MARRIAGE.—On Saturday morning an interesting marriage was solemnised at the old Peniel Chapel. The contracting parties were Miss Lizzie Roberts, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roberts, Bwlch y Gwynt, and Mr. R. H. Williams, second son of Mr. and Mrs. Williams, Blaen Nant. The bridesmaid was Miss C. J. Roberts (sister of the bride), and the best man was Mr. Jesse Williams, Redditch (brother of the bridegroom). The ceremony was perform- ed bv the Rev. Evan Davies in the presence of Mr. A. T. Hughes, Registrar. The pre- sents were numerous and handsome. DEATH.—We regret to announce the death of Mrs. Barker, Ty'nyberllaii, widow of the late Mr. AY. Dean Barker, the well- known artist, which occurred on Saturday. It appears that on Thursday morning Mrs. Evans went to call the deceased, but re- ceiving no reply she immediately sent for the doctor and the room door was forced open, when they found the lady suffering from a seizure and in an unconscious con- dition. In this state she remained until Saturday morning, when she passed away. She was 80 years of age. BIBLE SOCIETY.The annual meeting of the Bible Society was held at Peniel Schoolroom on Monday evening, the Rev. Henry Jones presiding, when a rousing ad- dress was delivered by the Rev. W. R. Ro- berts, Wesleyan minister, Llandudno. The balance-sheet was read by the Secretary, Mr. David Roberts, Bryn Afon, which showed that the collections for last year exceeded those of previous years.

CAERHUN. PRIZE-WINNING.—Col. Gee, Caerhun Hall, was awarded nine prizes by the Ches- ter Paxton Society at their show held at the Town ILaM, Chester, on the 16th inst., including a prize for 12 dishes of apples and several prizes for chrysanthemums, cut blooms. Great credit is due to Mr. P. Greene,. the head gardener.

LLANFAIRFECHAN. PRESENTATION.—On Sunday the ser- vices at the English Presbyterian Chapel were conducted by the Rev. R. Morgan Jones, M.A., the late pastor. There were large congregations, and at the evening ser- vice the members took the opportunity of presenting their late respected pastor with a testimonial in the form of a cheque, as an appreciation of his excellent services. Eulogistic remarks were made by Mr. T. G. Morgan and Mr. W. G. Roberts, Llall Bank, and Mr. Jones suitably responded. As previously announced, Mr. Morgan Jones has relinquished the ministry, and has opened a school at Holyhead. FOOTBALL.—The following team will represent Llanfairfechan in their League match at home against Holyhead Reserves on Saturday next:—W. Manley M. Griffith and A. C. Cotton; \Y. J. Jones, W. POLICE ASSISTANCE.—At the Bangor Police Court, on Tuesday, Thomas Uryn, Bryn, Llanfairfechan, was charged with drunkenness on the 14th November, and fined 2S. 6d. and costs. P.C. NVilliams gave evidence that he heard shouting near the village bridge, and on going there he found Uryn by the side of the river in charge of two men, who were preventing him from entering the water. He was drunk, and witness took him home and as- sisted his wife to undress him, as his clothes were wet. NARROW ESCAPE.—On Monday after- noon, Mr. W. Jones, better known as Co Bach, met with a narrow escape whilst cycling to Conway. On the road he notic- ed a runaway horse coming to meet him. There was a steam roller on the road at the time, and he very nearly got jammed between the engine and the horse. But for the fact that the roller was stopped, Jones would undoubtedly have been badly crushed. A NEW INSTITUTE.—We learn on good authoritv that a Church institute is shortly to be erected in the village. The movement has been hailed with great interest, and the institute will undoubtedly supply a long- felt want, Some verv generous donations towards the good cause have been made.

PENMAENMAWR. TEA PARTY7.—A tea party was held at Horeb Chapel on Wednesday last in aid of the funds. It was well attended. ST. DAVID'S CHURCH.—At a meeting of young people at the vestry on Wednes- day, Mr. T. F. Evans read a paper on "Proper behaviour in a place of worship." Remarks were made on the paper by Mr. A. W. Jones (President), Rev. W. R. Wil- ii IS. liams, Messrs. W. Hughes and W. Lewis. Recitations were given by Jane E. Jones and Florence Davies. Songs were rendered bv Miss Rachel Jones and Mr. W. Lewis. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr. Evans for his paper. Next week Mr. H. W. Jones will read a paper on "Form of ser- vice." DANCING CLASSES.—The classes are well attended, both in the Oxford Hall on Tuesdays and in the Co-operative Build- ings on Wednesdays. AMBULANCE CLASS.—This class, under the (auspices of the St. John Ambulance Association, met on Monday evening. A good number have been registered as mem- bers, and it is to be hoped they will stick to it. It is a cheap way of acquiring useful knowledge. THE LATE MRS. WIIELDON JONES. —Mr. R. MUTUAL IMPROVEMENT SOCIETY.- The subject under discussion at the last meeting was True and False Courage." opened by Mr. W. J. Roberts in a paper which proved to be an exhaustive summary of the matter in hand. He remarked that from the very commencement of his exist- ence man Was always encompassed by dangers, which had made some measure of courage to be the possession of everyone. True courage always had for itself a moral I aim, and arose from a sense of duty, while false courage, often mistaken for true, in reality was arrogance or boldness with an aim which was selfish. Mr. F. L. Rartle will introduce the subject of the next meet- ing—"Is war between civilised nations a disgrace, and can it be abolished? There are still a few vacancies in the member- ship, which should be applied for at once. PROPOSED AMATEUR DRAMATIC SOCIETY.-A movement is on foot to form an amateur dramatic society for the town, the object of which is to support the Hos- pital for Women in Shaw-street, Liverpool. Mr. R. D. Owen is the president, Mr. J. E. Williams, Post Office, secretary, and Miss A. L. Phillips, treasurer. ACCIDENT.—On Monday morning as a phaeton belonging to Mr. Albert Wood, Conway, was being driven to Penmaenmawr the horse was startled by a traction engine near Pendvffryn and bolted. The carriage collided with a lamp-post near the Brick- field, and one of the broken shafts pierced the horse's breast. A veterinary surgeon was called in, and the animal was taken to the Pendvffrvn stables. Later in the day the horse, which was a valuable one, had to be destroyed. Air. AAood s coachman, who was the driver of the phaeton, was fortunately uninjured. MINISTERIAL APPOINTMENT—The Rev. John Rowlands, pastor of the Maenan C.M. Chapel, has been appointed by the English Presbyterians to take a number of services at the chapel during the coming year, owing to the resignation of the pastor, the Rev. R. Morgan Jones, M.A. In the winter he will do the pastoral work of the church, including the conducting of the week-night services. PREACHING MEETINGS.—Special preaching meetings are being held this week in the Welsh Wesleyan Chapel, the officiat- ing minister being the Rev. Garret Roberts, Llanfairfechan. CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS.—At a meet- ing of the Tradesmen's Association held on Monday evening, and presided over by Mr. R. G. Owen, it was decided to ask the Council to declare a holiday on Monday and Tuesday, December 26th and 27th, and that the market should be held on Wednes- day, and also that Monday, the 2nd Janu- ary, should be recognised as a holiday, but that the shops shall open on Thursday, December 29th, and Thursday, January 5th, the whole of the day. TEMPERANCE.—A meeting of the AYomen's Temperance Association was held in Watling-street Mission Room on Friday, and was opened by Mrs. Thomas, Fron- deg. An able address was given by the President, Mrs. Rowlands, Grove House. A solo was given by Mrs. Williams, Station House, in good style, and she also con- tributed a duet in company with Mrs. Wil- liams, Gwynfa. A recitation was given by Miss Enid Wynne, and a dialogue by Miss Wynne and Miss Jones, Salem. An inter- esting item was an able paper by Mrs. E. P. Jones, Queen's-terrace, on Mary and lartha."
