Llanrwst Athletic Sports. The tenth annual athletic sports, under the auspices of the Llanrwst Cricket and I-ootball Clubs, was held on Monday on the Gwydvr Park enclosure, before a large attendance. Hughes, Dolgarrog. Ar the close of the sports the prizes were distributed on the steps of the Victoria Hotel by Mrs Huw Williams. In the evening dancing on the green was in- dulged in up to a late hour. There was also a fireworks display. The M.C's were Messrs. F. A. Charlton, T. Latimer Jones, H. J. W. Watling, and W, Hughes. We understand that the takings are slightly less than those of last year, accounted for by the showers of rain in the afternoon, which pre- vented several from being present The secretary had the arrangements most satisfactorily com- pleted, there being no hitch in the proceedings throughout the day. A local string band was in attendance, and supplied the music for the dancing in the evening.

Newmarket Chair and Crown Eisteddfod. Brilliant Success in the New Village Hall. Mr. Ralli's Public Spirited Gift. In brilliantly line weather and under entirely new auspices, the Bank Holiday Eisteddfod at Newmarket opened on Monday afternoon, under the happiest conditions. Although the first meeting was announced to commence as early as 12.30, there was an excellent attendance at the beautiful new village Hall (brought into ex- istence through the munificence of Mr. Kalli) when the hour of starting arrived. THE NEW VILLAGE HALL. This hall in the future will be the home of the Eisteddfod, which in the past has always been held in a large marquee, It augurs well, too. for the success of the Eisteddfod in days to come, that it should have been honoured bv being the first public event to be held in this line building, therebv co-inciding with its first real opening to the outside public, who in the past have Hocked to Newmarket. At last year's Eisteddfod, it will be remem- bered, Mr. M. A. Ralli, J .P., of Mia Hall, a gentle- man known throughout the neighbourhood and indeed the county of Flint for his philanthropy, promised that by the next time they met to- gether it would not be in a marquee, but in a more substantial and permanent building. And the magnificent and spacious structure, well lighted in every respect, and charmingly painted and decorated, onlv shows how faith- fully and well that promise to the public has been carried out bv Mr. Ralli. We are indebted," said the Eisteddfod pro- gramme, to M. V Ralli, Esq., Alia Hall, for this splendid structure, which, through his gen- erositv and municificence, has been built and presented to the parish of Newmarket in mem- orv of his late wife. We may be pardoned for saying that this is the crowning act of Mr. Ralli's consistent and generous support of our Eisteddfod and other objects worthy of his pat- ronage for so many years." Such was the tribute which the Eisteddfod Committee offered to Mr. Raili, and every one who has been privileged to glance at the object of their admiration will a,t(ree with the Commit- mittee's words of praise and appreciation. OFFICIALS. This vear the following gentlemen acted in the capacitv of officials in connection with the meetings. The presidents were Mr. M. A. Ralli, LP.. Mia Hall, and Mr. H. R. The accompanist was Mr. Nuttall, L.L.C.M., Mostyn, and the harpist was Miss Freda Holland,, while the penillion singer was Ap Elwy." THE AFTERNOON MEETING. There was a capital attendance when the after- noon competitions were entered upon, but as the meeting wore on more and more crowded into the building, which was packed long before the competitors were half wav through the pro- gramme. Those in the back of the hall, how- ever, did not in the least suffer anv disadvan- tage, for a building of more magnificent acoustic properties could not possibly be found. Pillow case: Miss Agnes Williams, Mar- I ian, Newmarket. In many respects the competitions were excel- lent, particularly the baritone, soprano, and girls' solo contests. In the case of the voung girl, Miss Blodwen Davies, of Ashton-in-Maker- field, the adjudicator said that she had a voice of extraordinary richness and promise, which if properly looked after and trained might bring her in a fortune. The baritone competition was exceedingly line, and the preliminary test was described by Mr. Lewis as the finest prelim- inary tussle of the dav. The performance of the winner was beyond all praise, one of the de- feated competitors being no less a person than the redoubtable Tom Goodwin, of Bwlchgwvn. The two young ladies who appeared on the stage in the soprano solo contest did remarkably well and were listened to with rapt attention. THE PRESIDENT'S ADDRESS. During the afternoon Mr. Ralli was called upon to deliver his presidential address, and his rising was the signal for a loud outburst of de- lighted applause. In addition, all those present struck up For he's a jolly good fellow." The cordial nature of the reception was such that Mr. Ralli was visibly affected bv it. In the course of his remarks Mr. Ralli said he was pleased to see that thev themselves were very much pleased with the hall. (Applause.) He could assure them that it gave him as much pleasure to erect it as it had given them to look upon the building in its finished state. He hoped they would make use of it in the future, not only for gatherings such as the one that dav. but also for concerts in the winter months. (Applause.) There was nothing nicer than music. It helped to soothe and to comfort them. The time, too, would come when it would be one of the strongest medicines prescribed by doctors for their bene- fit. In olden times one of the greatest difficul- ties which explorers of unknown countries ex- perienced was the reluctance of the natives to come forward and make themselves known to them. It was music, however, which was found to bridge the difficulty, and do away with that fear which the natives entertained until then for the strangers. He again hoped that they would make as much use of the hall in the future as thev possiblv could. (Loud and prolonged applause.) CHILDREN'S CHOIR COMPETITION. Only two choirs entered on this cciiil)etitioli- Rhvl juvenile Choir (conducted by Mr. Wads- worth) and Gronant Juvenile Choir (conducted bv Mr. W. Humphreys). The test piece was Pedr Alaw's prettv work, "In the snow now let us gather." Both choirs gave a very effective rendering, the prize being eventually awarded to Gronant amidst a perfect storm of applause. CHAIRING THE SUCCESSFUL. BARD. Amidst a scene of great excitement, the con- ductor commenced to read the adjudication upon the chair poem. Although there was not a single poor composition, neither was there a single poem of extraordinary merit out of the seven which had been sent in. The prize of :1 Is. and a carved oak chair, together with the honour of being the crowned bard of the year, was awarded to Anxious Shepherd," who, on rising, was immediately recognised. Mr. J. M. Edwards, M.A., of Holywell, and Mr. J. Jones immediatelv proceeded to the spot, the victor being eventually brought on to the platform to the strains of See the conquering hero comes." He proved to be Mr. Owen Henry Owen, of Glan Coron, Penvffordd, Ffynnongroew. The crowning ceremonv bv the Eisteddfod conductor then took place amidst acclamation, the winner being later on invested bv Miss Ralli. THE MALE VOICE CONTEST. This was par excellence the grandest competi- tion of the day. and well worth a journev to New- market to listen to. Seven choirs had entered, but three onlv put in an appearance on the plat- form, namclv, Ffvnnongroew (conducted by Mr. 1. Spencer), Creuddvn (conducted by Mr. R. Roberts), abd Broughton and District (conducted by Mr. E. Evans). They sang in the order named. Throughout, the competition was character- ised by a noble massivity of song and a thorough interpretation of the solemnity and the majesty 01 the work. The first two choirs sang in Welsh, but Broughton decided to sing in English, the accompaniment being dropped and taken up again in a masterly manner, according as it was deemed necessary to keep the choir in tune. THE ADJUDICATION. Amidst intense silence, Mr. Lewis, towards 4.15 p.m., commenced to deliver his adjudica- tion — Xo, 1 choir (Ffvnnongroew-).— Excellent voices in fact, extraordinarily good voices, like the rock, neither moving up nor down, and the balance perfect. The prayer could have been more praverfullv performed, but taking every- thing into consideration, the performance from beginning to end was a faultless one, although the praver movement had been better performed by another choir. The second choir (Creuddvn).-—Good voices, but not in a natural way up to the first choir.. The reading of the choir was careful, and what they could do had been done by this choir. Still, they showed a lack of training, and the soloist in the solo movement should avoid singing like an old man. Old age would come soon enough. Until then, he should avoid the tremolo. Intonation was impure, though the expression was careful. On the whole, it was a fairlv good rendering. No. 3 (Jiro tighton).-Goo(I voices, not up to the first in quality. Balance happy reading correct, and time good, and evidently under a careful trainer. The tone in some portions of the piece was a little forced, but the first move- ment and the two last were very good. The solo was bevond all doubt the finest, and with more training and practice, it would make an excellent choir. The second choir was good, the third better, but beyond all doubt the best was the first. (Loud applause.) A hearty vote of thanks to Mr. Ralli for pre- siding was proposed by Mr. J. Jones, the village schoolmaster, who, referring to Mr. Ralli and his services to Newmarket, said that no words of his could convev their thanks to him for his crowning act of kindness in giving them that beautiful hall, which would be a monument to his generosity for generations to come. The vote was carried amidst great acclamation. Mr. Ralli brieflv responded, and stated that whatever he could do in the future, he would be most happy to do for them. It was also stated that manv who had left Newmarket years ago had come from far and near in order to be present at the meeting that day and to witness the holding of the Eistedd- fod for the first time in the Ralli Hall. THE EVENING MEETING. In the evening the hall was packed to excess long before the meeting commenced with an excited but very patient and good humoured crowd. Mr. Ralli was again present, but the duties of President at the second gathering were most ably carried out by Mr. Hughes, of The Bank, Prestatyn. Mr. Hughes heartily congratulated the people of Newmarket upon the fact that the generosity of Mr. Ralli had enabled them to meet in such a magnificent building, which would long remain a monument to his kindness. He wished Mr. Halli long life, so that for many years to come they could continue in New market to enjoy his generosity and the advantage of his presence to the neighbourhood. (Applause.) Amongst those also present at the evening meeting none came in for a more cordial recep- tion than Mr. J. Herbert Lewis, M.P. for Flint county, who was accompanied by Mrs. and Miss Lewis. During the evening it fell to the lot of Mr. Lewis to deliver the adjudication in connection with the essay competition on The History of Newmarket." Mr. Herbert Lewis, on rising, was accorded a splendid reception, and said it was with a feeling of the greatest pleasure that he was present that night at a Newmarket Eisteddfod which was being held under such circumstances. It was the first time for the Eisteddfod to meet in that beautiful and commodious hall, which had been erected by their generous friend and neighbour, Mr. Ralli. (Loud applause.) Many a century would pass by before that monument could be obliterated, for he had noticed that it had been built as strongly as the rock of Gibralta. (Re- newed applause.) Two centuries ago a ruc,;} named John Wynne left his mark upon New- market and its neighbourhood. It was he who created the trades which gave to the place the name of Newmarket, and to-day, although 200 years had gone bv, his memory was still green. In Mr. Ralli they had another John YVvnne. so that it was possible that 200 years hence, when other essays upon a history of Newmarket were being written, Mr. Ralli would occupy an import- ant place in those records. Dealing with the essays sent in, which were three in number, Mr. Lewis said that two of them had been written in English and one in Welsh. The essay of Alaston," although con- taining some, en- interesting matter, was very short and showed no evidence of original re- search. The essav of Nemo," on the other hand, contained about 10,000 words, and dis closed considerable knowledge of the subject, as well as a considerable amount of thought. The writer,too, in addition, was to be commended for giving the authorities for his statements. The essay of Historicus contained 22.000 won: and was written in Welsh. It contained a va-t amount of information respecting Newmarket and its neighbourhood. The arrangement of the information, however, was not satisfactory, as ii the writer, having had too much matter to deal with, had not the time in which to marshal his facts and put them into proper order. The history of the various local families and the biographies of the various local celebrities, as well as the different religious bodies, had betn very fully dealt with. The style, too, of the writer was excellent, so that thev considered "Historicus" to be worthy of the prize. He suggested that such essays should be copied and sent to the National Library of Wales to be filed away for the guidance and help of the his- torian of the future. (Loud applause.) That would enable him to go and find out all he de- sired to know about Newmarket. (Loud ap- plause.) During the evening Mr. Spencer, the leadtr of the successful Ffvnnongroew Male Voice Choir, was crowned bv Mrs. Herbert Lewis, who also awarded him the prize amidst scenes ci great enthusiasm. It was also announced that "The Suns c: Thunder were present at the night meeting ready to take part in the second male voice con- test, and the remark of the conductor to the effect that We shall have thunder to-night," was accordingly greeted with much merriment. Although The Sons of Thunder seemed 'o have frightened all the competitors away, how- ever, in awarding them the prize, the adjudica- tor said that the manner in which they passed from the major to the minor and back again was excellent. it was indeed a splendid ren- dering, and one which was well worthy of the prize. Taken through and through, however, the competitions at the evening meeting did not either from the point of view of quantity cx quality approach those heard during the after- noon, and it was also quite evident that in some instances the competitors were very greatly in- convenienced by the noise of so many people passing to and from the hall. THE CHIEF CHORAL. Five choirs had entered for the mixed choir competition, "The Broken Harp" (prize 1 141 ,,(-T- and a silver cup). They were Ashton-in-Maker- field Welsh esleyanChoir (secretary, Mr. C L. Price), 1-iynnongroew United Choir (conductor, Mr. E. Lloyd), Northop Hall and Wepre I nittd (conductor, Mr. W. J. Harper), Prescot & Dis- trict Choral Society (conductor Mr. D. 1, Wil- liams), Rhuallt United Choir (conductor, Mr. K. Jones). Out of the five, four of these actually put n an appearance on the platform, and after an interesting contest, the Prescot Choir was award- ed the first prize of f: 1 (I and a silver cup for the conductor, Ashton-in-Makerfield being declared, to be the second. Second male voice competition, "Airs ci Wales": Only one party competed, namely, The Sons of Thunder from Ashton-in-Maker- field. They were deemed fully worthy of the prize of £ 4. Conway River Regatta. The programme of the regatta which is being held under the patronage of Lord Mostyn and His Worship the Mayor of Conway promises to be a very interesting one. The Commodore is Mr. Albert Wood, J.P., D.L., and the hanui. capper Mr. J. F. Jellico. The regatta is fixer] for Saturday, the 13th August, and already several entries have been received. There are some excellent yacht races, and the prizeq offere.1 are substantial ones. There will also be a handi- cap race for motor boats for the Cornelius Sever Challenge Cup. There are also five boat races and nine rowing races, the most interesting ci these undoubtedly being the four-oared rigged gigs. Races are provided for visitors and boatmen alike. There are also eight swim- ming races. Altogether the committee have prepared an excellent programme of events and given fine weather, the banks of the river at Deganwy and on the Conway side will be lined by crowds of spectators. oJ The regatta has not been held since 1907. owing to lack of support, and now that an in- fluential committee have undertaken to revive it, it is hoped that residents of the borough wi" heartily support them in their object.
