Notes and News.
Notes and News. The Welsh M.P.'s are united-in post- poning Disestablishment. It is admitted that the House of Lords question will have to be settled before any measure of real reform is passed. A strong contingent of Welsh Liberals visited the House of Commons on Tuesday, and some very plain talking was indulged in by delegates and members of the Welsh Party. Mrs. Lloyd George entertained the Liberal delegates from Wales to tea on Tuesday, and a very enjoyable afternoon was spent. Among the delegates who attended the Welsh Party meeting this week were the Revs. J. Hugh Edwards and T. Eynon Davies, two stalwart supporters of the Disestablishment movement. Mr. Richard Lloyd George has completed his course at Oxford and graduated in Science in the final examination. His inten- tion is to take up engineering as a profession. The marble bust of Sir John Rhys, which has been subscribed for by a number of admirers, will be presented to him on his birthday, December 21st next, at Jesus College, Oxford. The bust is an excellent life model, and is the work of Mr. Goscombe J,ohn, the famous sculptor. It is announced that the annual conver- sazione of the Hon. Society of Cymmrodorion will be held at the Drapers Company Hall in Throgmorton Gardens on July 5th next. Viscount Tredegar, supported by the master of the company, will receive the guests on the occasion. During the past few weeks the Cymmrodorion Society has added some distinguished Welshmen to its roll of members, including Mr. Haydn Jones, M.P., Mr. Sidney Robinson, M.P., Mr. F. W. Gibbins, M.P., Hon. W. Ormsby Gore, M.P., Mr. Humphreys Owen, and Mr. W. Venables Llewelyn, M.P. London Welsh Literary Societies are noted for the inter-debates held between them during the winter season, and it looks as if this kind of debating contests is to be greatly on the increase. The latest announcement is that a Welsh Literary Society from Cardiff has challenged the Welsh Tabernacle Society of London to a debate to take place early in the autumn. The meeting will undoubtedly prove an attractive feature, and we have no doubt the return match" will be held in due course. What kind of a preacher is the Rev. S. E. Prytherch ? asked a Lampeter man to a prominent Londoner the other day, Oh, very good and very original," was the reply. But why does he come to Lampeter for a much smaller salary than he gets in London ?" was the next query, Oh, that is where his originality comes in," replied the friend. Merthyr has one distinction. It is the only town in Wales which supports its own municipal band and an excellent band it is, too. Alltwen" is the name of the private residence of Mr. Southall, the well-known Quaker and publisher of Newport. Mr. Southall is an admirer of Wales and has done all he can to further the Welsh language. Mr. Asquith was accorded a hearty Cymric welcome on the occasion of his visit to St. David's the other day. Mr. Asquith, who was accompanied by Mrs. Asquith and the First Lord of the Admiralty, landed in St. Bride's Bay from the Admiralty yacht the Enchantress," and proceeded to St. David's, where the party inspected the Cathedral, under the guidance of Dean Smith. There is not a more delightful holiday resort in Wales or England than the Mumbles. The village is very picturesque, and there are charming views of the sea. Caswell Bay is exceedingly pretty, and here one gets the ozonized breezes from the broad Atlantic. A CELT correspondent, who entered a refreshment house in the Mumbles the other day was much interested in a notice on the wall which indicated that, both Madame Patti and the late Mr. Gladstone had visited the house. The proposal to transfer the Radnorshire Assize business to Swansea is arousing much opposition at Presteign, the old county town. It is contended by those who advo- cate the change, that the business transacted is so small that there is no necessity for a special assize in Radnorshire, and that the county could be attached to Swansea in this matter, thereby saving expense.
