Notes and News.
Notes and News. It is not expected that the Lords will submit to the demands of the Commons, consequently there will be an election in June. The leaders of the respective parties are anxious to postpone the appeal to the country until the autumn. In the meantime Mr. Balfour will probably be asked to form a ministry. Mr. W. O'Brien has created a stir in political circles, and it is evident that ministers will be more cautious in their dealings with him in the future. A by-election is to take place in the Crewe division owing to the death of the veteran sportsman, Mr. Tompkinson, who met with so tragic an end whilst racing on Saturday last. The Rev. George Ferris Windbourne, the former vicar of St. George's, Battersea, has just died leaving a fortune of 1530,000. All this vast fortune is left for the widow and children. The rev. gentleman evidently believed that "charity begins and ends at home." The veteran evangelist, General Booth, celebrated his 81st birthday this week. He enjoys excellent health and is full of plans for future campaigns. Mr. William Jones, M.P., will be the principal speaker at the Labour demonstra- tion to be held at Carnarvon on May 2nd next. The day will be observed as a general holiday in the North Wales quarry districts. Mr. Edgar Jones, M.P., opened a branch of the League of Young Liberals at Merthyr on Saturday, and addressed a large gathering there. Amongst other speakers was Mr. Clement Edwards, the defeated candidate of the Denbigh Boroughs. Great relief was felt throughout South Wales when it was announced that there would be no strike in the coalfield. The period of uncertainty greatly injured the trade of the district, and many valuable orders were permanently lost. These con- tinual trade disputes do irreparable harm.
