T Notes and News.
T Notes and News. The Venerable Archdeacon David Evans, of Llandudno, died last week after reaching a ripe old age. He was the preacher at the St. David's Welsh Festival at St. Paul's Cathedral in London some five years since. We have pleasure in. publishing a portrait of THE REV. D. D. JOSEPH, President of the Monmouthshire Congrega- tional Association and Chairman of the Newport Nonconformist Ministers' Associa- tion. Mr. Joseph is a native of Llandyssul, Cardiganshire. He is pastor of Mill Street Congregational Church, Newport, a very flourishing cause, where he has accomplished excellent work. It is about 195 years since the most honourable and loyal Society of Ancient Britons first held its annual dinner, and many a quaint gathering was held when the old Welsh school was located on Clerken- well Green. It would be interesting to have a list of the eminent Welshmen who have presided over these gatherings from year to year. The eminent harpist, Mr. John Thomas (Pencerdd Gwalia), is very loyal to the Welsh Girls' School at Ashford, and rarely misses an opportunity of entertaining the pupils with solos on his favourite instrument at the annual gathering in London. His selections at the Holborn Restaurant last St. David's day were greatly admired by all music lovers. The Rev. Richard Roberts, late pastor of the Welsh Calvinistic Methodist Chapel at Willesden Green has received a call from the Presbyterian Church at Crouch Hill. Mr. Roberts is an eloquent preacher, a clear thinker, and very broad-minded. Since leaving the Welsh pulpit he has laboured with much success at the Westboure Park Presbyterian Church. Who was Dafydd Benwyn ? According to Mr. J. Kyrle Fletcher's recently-published book" the accepted opinion is that Dafydd Benwyn was a native of Glamorgan. He was of the royal line in bardic succession, for he was one of the awenyddion (disciples) of Lewys Morganwg, who in turn had sat at the feet of Ieuan Deulwyn. He (Mr. Fletcher) thought he was safe in assuming that he was born about the close of the reign of Henry VIII., and that he settled at Tredegar about 1570, living in Monmouthshire for many years, possibly till his death in the reign of James I." There is a possibility of Londoners being able by next Christmas to book direct from Paddington to Aberayron by train. The new Lampeter-Aberayron railway is being rapidly proceeded with, and the track is now laid. to within two or three miles of the picturesque little Cardiganshire seaside town. There is not a more delightful valley in the whole of Britain than the Vale of Aeron. As the poet expressed it Sweet Aeron's Vale, unknown in song, Demands the warbling lyre, Shall silvery Aeron glide along And not a bard inspire ? The new railway will bring large numbers of Tourists into the district, and the fame of the Vale will soon spread Aberayron, also, is certain to receive increased patronage as a seaside resort. Congratulations to Sir S. T. Evans on his being appointed President of the Probate, Divorce and Admiralty Division of the High Courts of Justice.
