FOOTBALL NOTES AND NEWS. RUGBY AT WEST HAM! r H E London Welsh finding themselves with- out a suitable ground for the coming Season in the North, South, or West of London, decided to take the Memorial Grounds, West Ham, and thus carry their game into the heart of the Association Code preserves. All success be to them for the future, both from a playing and financial point of view, and if last Saturday's game and the crowd that witnessed it is any criterion, their suc- cess is assured The Ground is in every way convenient, being only 15 minutes from the City by District Railway. It has a splendid playing area, good going ground, ample stand accommodation and a crowd of 70,000 would in no way mean a crush, indeed everyone of them would get a good view of the game. On Saturday last before a crowd of about 5,000 spectators including Sheriff Sir William Dunn and the Mayor of Stoke Newington Alderman W. B. Trick the Welshmen of London and the South of England, designated Anglo Welsh" for the occasion, played the opening game of the London Rugby Season, and had as their opponents the famous Glamorgan County XV which included six internationals to the homesters five. It was obvious from the laughter indulged in that the majority of the spectators were not familiar with the Rugger tackle "or Scrummage," but as time wore on they became more engrossed and rapidly picked up the finer points of the game, which ended in a win for Glamorgan by the narrow margin of one point, Bush dropping a fine goal and Ivor Morgan secur- ing a try for Glamorgan and two tries by the Anglo-Welsh," J. F. Williams and T. P. Lloyd being the ones to catch the Referee's eye over the time for the homesters. Taking into consideration the heat of the day the game was very fast and played in excellent spirit by both sides. For Glamor- gan, McGregor, Bush, Edwards, W. Jones, and Ivor Morgan were the pick, whilst Richards at back played a safe game for the Welsh. Maddocks was great" both in defence and attack Lloyd, once he got into his stride, was very difficult to stop and his try was got in good style. Meyrick and Alexander played sound games for the home- sters although they both had to put up with a lot of shady things on the side of David who was up to all his old tricks of putting the ball in unfairly and hacking his oppon- ents on the slightest opportunity. Sad to relate, Williams, Watkins, Harding and Partridge were ever in the thick of it, whilst in C. F. Jones and E. G. Jenkins, the Welsh seem to have a couple of young forwards who will be heard of again. The Committee of the London Welsh devoted part of the proceeds of the gate towards the Lord Mayor's Cripple Fund, and it is hoped other Clubs will follow their ex- ample during the season. I On Saturday next the London Welsh will entertain the Catford Bridge XV on the new ground when a good game should be witnessed. The leading Welsh teams mostly indulged m practice games on Saturday last; but no great stars appeared to take the places of ftien like Nicholls, Joseph, Hodges, &c. Gabe seems to have found his form thus early in the season. Merthyr and Ebbw Vale, the Welsh recruits of the Northern Union, have up to now failed to win their first match, and I am afraid that they have a greater fight in front of them than they imagine. I am glad to see that the leading Welsh Clubs have given fixtures to Merthyr Rugby Union Club, and it is sincerely hoped that the flag of Amateurism will long outlive Professionalism in Merthyr and Ebbw Vale. WELSH FORWARD.
