Notes and News.
Notes and News. THE price of coal is still advancing. It predicts hard times for the poor during the coming winter. CRITICS are now very busily dividing the Swansea Eisteddfod surplus. It would be just as well to wait and see what the real amount is before arranging how to spend it. TIIE London Welsh Football Club is going to inaugurate its season with an inter- national match. Such enterprise ought to be encouraged. A FINE way to make the 1909 Eisteddfod a success would be, to offer a thousand pounds and a carved oak chair for the best limerick verse Is the art of "englyn"—making on the wane ? Not one was worthy of the prize this year at Swansea, and those that the bards recited at the Gorsedd were very second-rate productions. ABERYSTWYTH is vieing with Cardiff in its admiration of the Welsh language. At a recent meeting of the local Council it was suggested that the surveyor's report should be prepared in Welsh. English is to be reserved for members to use when there are any "scenes" at the council meetings. Welsh is not expressive enough for occa- sions of that kind. CANON RUPERT MORRIS, D.D., has been appointed editor of the" Archæologia Cam- brensis" in succession to the late Mr. Romilly Allen. Canon Rupert Morris is an eminent scholar, a D.D. and F.S.A., and an honorary canonry of St. David's Cathedral. He is a well-known writer on arch geological topics, and some time since produced a History of Chester in the Plantagenet and Tudor Reigns," as well as a History of the Diocese of Chester." MOUNTAINEERING in Wales is not without its dangers. Last Saturday two young Cam- bridge students endeavoured to climb the famous Devil's Kitchen, near Bethesda, and when near the top of the precipice lost their hold and both were hurled to the bottom of the cliff. Mr. A. T. Reid, son of Professor Reid of Cambridge, was mutilated beyond recognition, and his watch was smashed to pieces. His companion, Mr. Bigg, from Ireland, was also terribly injured, and though conscious, could not give a definite account of how the accident happened. WE have had many lady candidates for School Boards and lady candidates for Boards of Guardians in Wales, but a lady candidate for a County Council is a novelty. At the November Swansea County Council election, however, Miss Dillwyn will be a candidate. Miss MIRIAM JONES, Mynyddbach, a young lady of but thirteen years of age, was second in the penillion competition "Dull y De" at the recent National Eisteddfod. Miss Jones has already won 53 prizes. THE Tribune writes glowingly of Mr. Lloyd-George The pride of Wales received two precious gifts from the fairies at his birth—energy and combativeness-and has used them with native shrewdness in build- ing up a political career." Pride of Wales." We like that pretty description. THE Tregaron Board of Guardians carry on their business in Welsh, and also have their minutes recorded in the ancient language of Gwalia. And now the Aberyst- wyth Rural District Council have decided that their surveyors should make" their reports in Welsh. We heartily congratulate both public bodies. ACCORDING to Ap Madoc, it was Thomas Jefferson, a Welshman, who framed the American "Declaration of Independence," and who, later on, was President of the United States. ACCORDING to the same authority, it was a Welshman (Professor Williams) that taught George Washington mathematics. IT may not be generally known that there is a Welsh Calvinistic Methodist Church at New York. ONE of the most admired portraits of the National Eisteddfod exhibition was that of Hwfa Mon, by Mr. Christopher Williams, London, and a native of Maesteg. THE Swansea Daily Leader is publishing a daily column in Welsh. It is probably the first daily paper in the world to do so. THE London Daily Mail issued a contents bill in Welsh during the Eisteddfod week. This compliment to our national language was much appreciated. IN opening the Arts and Crafts Exhibition of the Welsh National Eisteddfod, the Mayoress of Swansea said there was no lace which could be called Welsh lace. She hoped the time was not far distant when some lady would produce a design which they could claim as Welsh. We hope so, too. LIKE the majority of Welshmen who have left their native land and amassed fortunes away, the late Sir David Evans did practi- cally nothing for Wales. THREE Conservatives, two Liberals, and one Labour magistrate have been appointed for Swansea. There are still some people who say that magisterial appointments are made with strict political impartiality." Next, please THE Football season has arrived once more. Soon the newspapers will teem with such sentences as "Dai Bach got the ball and passed to Twm Tomos, who raced over and scored a try," &c., and so forth. There will be quite eight months of this. SOME 150 bands from all parts of England and Wales will compete in this year's championship band festival which will be held at the Crystal Palace on September 28. In past years Wales has done none too well in this annual festival, but there may be an improvement this year.
