Hippodrome, Tonypandy. A very fine show is in evidence at the Hippo." this week. Topping the bill is an expensive engagement of Mr. W. Douglas' famous troupe, Five Jolly Bakers, who discharge their culinary duties in a very acrobatical manner. Their many difficult feats are exiceptionally clever, whilst the quaint spice of comedy introduced is certainly amusing. Jack Mackenzie, comedian, pays a welcome return visit to Tonypandy, where he is a prime favourite. His dame creations are exceedingly clever, whilst his foot- ball act is true in every detail to the nature of Kipling's Muddied Oaf." Harry Keeble goes extremely well with his ventriloquial companion, whose smart jokes and witty talk cause no end of fun. Quite a novelty to Tonypandy audi- ences is the novel tramcar act provided by the Three Krakes, entitled Fun on a Tramcar, which is responsible for peal after peal of laughter. Clara Wells, chic comedienne, possesses a voice of rare quality, and is very popular in her chorus songs. Golden and Chance, acrobatic eccentrics, are a highly amusing couple. Some very fine pictures are shown on the Hippos cope, while the orchestra is up to its usual form. Another gigantic programme is pro- misecl Hippodrome patrons next week, when at the top of the bill will be found the Auriginy Trio of marvellous Japanese Jugglers; whilst a special engagement of Max Montesole, supported by Miss Lucie Carie and Mr. Ribton Haines, in London's latest laugh, Even Money on the Garter," is announced. Supporting the above powerful turns are George Don, in a series of burlesque character songs; Leon and Tee, in a comedy musical act, Fun on the Farm the Arnolds, delusionists, in a smart cabinet mystery; the Sisters Robertson; Morris and Moore, simultaneous dancers Fame and Fortune, comedy boxers; and Will and Rose, Con- tinental eccentriques. On Friday evenr ing, September 16th, both houses will be set apart for the benefit of Ted Garland, who, it will be remembered, was injured some time ago. This is, indeed, a very deserving case, and we ask our readers to heartily support the Hippodrome management in making this benefit as successful as possible.

Theatre Royal, Tonypandy. Florodorais certainly one of the most popular of all the musical comedies, and Mr. Charles Constant's company pro- ducing it at the Royal this week is of the very first order. Johnny Schofield as Tweedlepunch," for instance, being simply inimitable. With Miss Florence Hersee as Angela," Miss Daisy Lake as "Dolores, and Miss Kate Leicester as Lady Holroyd, the success of the production is assured, particularly as the remainder of the company are as excel- lent in their several parts. La Danse des Apache?," introduced in the second act by Miss Florence Hersee and Mr. -fol-inny Junior, is a thrilling incident, and many of the audience do not recover breath until the reappearace of these artistes in response to the deafening ap- plause. Doubtless the theatre will be crowded for the last two nights of this engagement.

Empire, Tonypandy The programme at the Empire this week is of. all-round excellence, every turn being warmly appreciated by the large audiences. G. W. Hunter, who tops the bill, is a comedian with very clever and catchy songs, whilst his stories are an effective antidote to that tired feeling. A delightful fifteen minutes is given the audience by R. Cardigan and Company in The Distinguished Visitor." There is some good singing, whilst the acting is par excellence. The antics of Joseph, the butler, and the amorous propensities of Prince Popofi, the Rooehan," are side- splitting. A very popular turn is that given by Little Zola,. If Zola. never uttered a word he would set the audience in convulsions. There is a fortune in his I face. His improvisations on well-known nursery rhymes are delightful, and he secures a rousing encore as reward. A I turn of quite a different character is that I contributed by Cissie Lupino. Here, indeed, the artiste does not say a single word, relying entirely on the merits of her various cleverly executed dances. She also is warmly appreciated. Good singing and superb dancing secure approval for the Soho Trio. The lady artiste has a voice which is excellent in timbre and flexibility; whilst the graceful and novel dancing of her companions is much admired. Susie and Protti, dancers; Burt Ward, comedy whistler; and Barney Murphy, comedian, are other strong items on an attractive bill. Mr. Frank Lister, the popular London star, appear next week in an original American dramatic sketch, entitled "No 99." The sketch will be presented by Mr. Fred Kitchen (of Sergeant Lightning fame) and Mr. Frank Lister's company. The scene is laid in Judge Campbell's Chambers, New York City, and the staging and mounting will be left in capable Empire hands. No. 99 is a. sketch of intense interest and should draw large audiences during next week. Those two clever "vagabonds," Binns and Binns, are also billed, and will regale the funniest of comedy, accompanied by sweet music. Supporting the above are Alcide Capitane, the perfect gymnast, and a study of grace and physical culture; Jack Holland, comedian; the Phoenix Trio—those New York Boys; Gladys Soman, descriptive vocalist; Macintosh and Royal, who can, dance; and the Empiroseope,

Wrestling. On Monday next, at the Tonypandy Empire, a wrestling match to a finish will take place between Councillor Peter Wright (Newport) and Bob Perry, the world's middleweight champion catch-as- catch-can wrestler. It may not be for- gotten that Councillor Wright challenged Berry at the Empire on Friday, August 26th, to wrestle him to a finish, which Berry accepted. If Wright wins, he will make a donation to local charities as he usually does. The men are announced to be on the mat at 4 p.m. Other wrestling bouts will be decided.

Palace Porth. An excellent programme is submitted at the Palace this week, and Mr. Will Smithson deserves hearty congratulation for the quality of the dramas produced since the change of management. This week, Mr. and Mrs. F. G. Kimberley's London company produce their new romantic military drama, entitled The Power of the King. This is unquestion- ably a play with one of the most original plots conceived, for, strange to say, the villain is defeated at every turn. Several plots are conceived throughout the per-. formance, but every one is nipped in the bud. This, however, does not take away from the excellency of the drama, but rather adds to its brilliancy and sensa- tionalism. Mr. Chas. Whittock as the "King" is truly a noble character, and nobly impersonated. His dignity, bear- ing and comportment are very impres- sive. Miss Marie Franklyn as Lady Anastasia" (a lady of the Court) is a beautiful heroine, and her performance is worthy of loud approbation. Mr. Clavering Craig is an actor of great vigour; his expression and delivery worthy of a fine elocutionist. The Crown Prince Oscar (a traitor Prince) has a capital imper- sonator in Mr. Arthur St. John. His imperturbability when exposed is great, and his facial expression when aroused reveals great ability in dramatic art. Lady Fiorina (Miss Ida Lyndon) (as Satan in the form of a childi) is an actress of exceptional merit. General Stevonie" (Mr. Harry Lindon) is also an artiste of great skill. Other good 'artistes are Mr. Witt on Drury as Fritz Falheim," Miss Alice Madill as Rosa," Mr. Fred New- burn as Capella, Mr. George Owen as "Carl Sigismund," Mr. Rob Graig as Alberta," the avenger, Mr. Lionel Strong as Michael Zeneski," and Master Sydney Clarence as "Philip," a child of the people.

Workmen's Hall, Ferndale. The above hall, during the latter part of last week, was occupied by Miss Inez Howard's talented company, who pre- sented the domestic drama, The Old Home," a story of a woman's fall, one more sinned against than sinning. It is a play based on human nature, throbbing with interest and human passions, pre- senting in homely pathos and soul- stirring situations the trials and temp- tations in every woman's life. Mr. Sidney Rennef, who impersonates Daddy Dean, the old fisherman, was really fine, and fully deserved the appreciation he re- ceived. Hazel Dean," his (daughter, the girl who runs away to lead a, high. life, was in the capable hands of Miss Gertrude Bonser. Miss Harriette Loydall was a typi-cal Bridget Donaghan," Hazel\s foster-mother, and created much fun with her acting. Mr. George Steel gave a capital representation of the villain, Lord Avondale," the lord oi the manor, who induced Hazel to run away with him when her father and lover were out in a, storm. Mr. Alec ffinlayson (-' Sai-ii Adams," the 'ero of Trafalgar) and Miss Cora lie- de Waner (" Polly Popp, the barmaid) did justice to their respective parts, and Mr. John Blake was a success as the "Rev. Eric Armstrong, the hero. Others deserving mention were Mr. Edwin Johnson and Mr. Wilfred Martin. Next week, for the first three nights, at the New Workmen's Theatre, Fern- dale, there is promised an exceptionally fine attraction in the presentation of Hall Caine's greatest play, The Christian/' by Mr. Marcus Draper and his talented company of artistes, which has been de- scribed as the strongest that has been seen in the play for many years. The Christian is certainly the most popular of all Hall Caine's successes, afad it is a noteworthy fact that it appeals to all classes of the people, and that it is visited again and again by the clergy of every denomination, and also by very many others who under other circum- stances would never enter a theatre. The play is full of good things, and powerful situations, and every character is marked by the dramatic character and closeness to nature with which Hall Caine's genius invests all his creations. John, Storm '» will be played by Mr. Marciis Draper himself, and in the straightforward, self- sacrificing nature of this lovable clergy- man he finds a part which gives full scope to all his well-known histrionic abilities. Miss Gladys Purnell will play Glory Quayle," in which character this charming young actress has already made a great reputation. The rest of the com- pany are equally well chosen, whilst new scenery and dresses will be provided. In fact, The Christian will be found to be splendidly acted and magnificently dressed and staged. There will be per- formances on the evenings of Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Times and prices as usual.

Cardiff Empire. There is a bright and attractive pro- gramme arranged for the coming week at Cardiff Empire, where George Leyton and Staley's Company share the premier honours. The popular actor-vocalist will appear in the great success, The Roll Call," a stirring military scena, 'produced in two scenes and one tableau. This is one of the most touching and realistic productions that have been seen in Car- diff for some time, and a feature of the piece is the fact that a number of Crimean and Indian Mutiny veterans will appear on the stage, together with a powerful chorus. Another big engagement is that of Staley's Company, who will present their wonderful transformations. Three aproned men are seen in a cooper's shop vigorously at work on barrels and tubs, extracting melody therefrom. Then suddenly the stage is in darkness, a second elapses, and you look upon a complete drawing- room in the West End of London. Sud- denly the lights once more vanish, and when they are turned up again, the char- acters have once more been transformed from their high estate to one of coopering again. Jack Lorimer, the well-known Scotch comedian, will give all his latest songs and scenas; and Barry Lupino, the clever little comedian and dancer, will present a very pleasing show. The remaining items of interest on the bill are The Avolos, who give some won- derful double somersaults ? Stella Stahl comedienne and dancer; Barret and Knowles, comedians; Sylvia Du Barry, in a new scena; and the usual bright and interesting Bioscope pictures.

The Palace, Cardiff. THE YELLOW FANG." One of the finest, if not the finest sketch presented on the halls, is The I Yellow Fa«g," which is to be presented at the Palace next week. Dealing as it does with an actual incident, it is a brilliant quintessence of realism. There is a suggestion of much technical skill that enables the author-Mr. John G. Brandon-to so successfully translate it into the dramatic atmosphere necessary for the stage, without making it either stagey or consciously dramatic." It is the art which conceals art. The illusion is complete. While The Yellow Fang is being played, the stage and its craft recede, and the San Francisco Opium Hell, with its: hopeless woman victim, its subtle devilish little Chinese proprietor, its Chinese god, its incense and its hor- rible gloom become acute and ghastly realities, bringing to mind somewhat forcibly some of the half-hidden stories occasionally creeping out of the Chinese hells nestling unsuspected in England itself. So insistent indeed is the power- ful suggestion that it is with a feeling of gratitude one eventually realises that "The Yellow Fang" is, after all, only a sketch. Somewhere underneath it all is concealed a kind of moral.

Tivoli, Pentre. After a long series of pictures at the Tivoli, Mr. Will Stone makes a most interesting announcement for next week. He has secured Mr. George Testo Sante's company with a real circus drama, The Life of a Showman," written by George Testo Sante and Charles Darrell. This is practically three companies in one. as actors, variety and circus performers are included among the list of artistes. The piece is brimful of comedy, pathos and highly sensational scenes, chief among which is where the hero, Brien Leader," pits himself against two local cart horses. There is no trick in this; it is a genuine test of strength and endurance. This is not Mr. Sante's first visit to Pentre with The Life of a Showman," as he was here about three years ago and he should receive a hearty welcome. Hejias selected a very clever company, including Miss Dora Price, who is well known in the Rhondda Valley, and Mr. Frank Sante, who plays the hero. This should prove an attractive change, and good business is sure to result.

Rinking Notes. MILE AMATEUR HANDICAP. The grand dash for the final of the mile amateur handicap took place on Monday evening last at the Pavilion Rink, Tony- pandy. The dash was timed to take place at 9 o'clock, and at 8.15 every seat in the Rink was occupied. At 8.55 the Rink was packed to its fullest extent, so much so that accommodation was found for a number of visitors in the bandstand. Every conceivable space where a foothold could be obtained was occupied by some interested individual who was more than anxious to see what had justly been described as the final of the finest race ever held in Wales. Exactly at 9 oclock, the manager, Mr. Walter E. Dovey, announced the finalists, who received a most flattering reception. All were attired in picturesque racing costumes, and in the following order they skated to their respective marks: —No. 1, J. Cule, Pentre, 45yds., colour, red (2) W. Charles, Tonypandy, 60yds., colour, white; (3); H. A. Baker, Peny- graig, scratch, colour, blue; (4) A. Collier, Pentre, 60yds., colour, yellow. At the sound of the pistol all got away in smart style. On entering the sixth lap it was plainly noticeable that Baker, the scratch man, was gaining ground, and in the seventh lap Baker passed A. This did not present itself, and as the bell for the last lap sounded Baker made a last final effort to pass -on the outside, but failing to negotiate the corner, fell, thus giving Charles the coveted title of winner. At the Ferndale Secondary Schools on Wednesday evening, an enthusiastic meeting was 'held for the purpose of placing the Boy Scout movement on a proper basis. The meeting was a very representative one, and was presided over by Mr. D. Hannah (agent to Messrs. D. D'avis and Sons, Ltd..) The Chairman said that he was thoroughly in sympathy with the move- ment, and would render it every possible assistance (cheers). He further remarked that he would equip 200 Boy Scouts at his own expense. and he also had the pleasure of announcing that his company had promised to further the movement by equipping 300 Scouts (loud applause). Councillor D. Smith, Tylorstown, spoke in high praise of the movement, and addresses w-ere also delivered by the Rev. B. Jones-Evans (vicar), Messrs. F. LI. Jacob, G. Childs, and D. Fenwick. Mr. G. Jones, Trealaw- (organising sec- retary of the movement), then explained the formalities to be gone through by intending Boy Scouts and Scoutmasters, and a representative committee was appointed. I
