The Joys of Golf.
The Joys of Golf. A New Pastime for Mict-Rhondda. He is a golfer has become as dis- tinctive a designation as any professional title, now existing. But this is strange talking in the Rhondda. Why is it so? Is it not because we had little or no opportunity to cultivate the craft? When a Rhondda man wanted a game of golf, he had to pack his traps and start for Pontypridd, Radyr, Porthcawl, or Southerndown. This meant expense, which was a constant active deterrent to the most enthusiastic golfer if of mode- rate purse. However, that drawback can no longer exist, for the Rhondda to-day has itis links on the breezy downs of the Gilfach Goch mountain, in the centre of the Rhondda. Golf is the universal game. It is not a game for sightseers, and if one wishes to enjoy the game, it must be played; and only when one really does this will it reveal its great charm and secrets. One can sit and watch cricket and football, but even if you want to watch a. golfer, or even a golf match, you must "keep moving" as to the orders of a policeman. With the other games the crowd remain mere lookers-on, but once you come on the links, you soon resolve to play, and that is one of the greatnesses of the game. The interest people take in golf is an active interest, -and athletic as far as their years and muscles admit. Then, it is a cosmopolitan game, and that in its widest form. Age of player and seasons affect it not. Whether alone or in company, it lends its delights to the patron. It is capable of giving its fill to the tyro, though per- haps, with more tests to temper and lan- guage, as well as the expert. It has this quality, that with a little labour and intelligent care a golfer can be made out of anyone. The knowledge of the game, its rules and ways, can be learnt on the first v bit. the remaining joys come with the measure of one's fidelity to the links. It is certainly aristocratic, for it is the physical anchor sheet of the great men of the land. We owe to golf the sus- Photo by] [Mr. L. Ladd, Tonypandy MR. TOM JOHN PUTTING. We hope, therefore, that the Rhondda Golf Links will be well patronised. If any particulars are required, Mr. Willie ¡' Llewellyn, Tonypandy, or Mr. Thomas, Lloyds Bank, will gladly direct the seeker through the initial stages. The approach to the links is through the Gelli Farm, and the circle of greens. takes the golfer i far up the mountain into an atmosphere (pure and undiluted by anything which industrial Rhondda can affect. A pro- fessional golfer has been engaged, ana he will soon put the newcomer at his ease. We trust, therefore, that its popularity will grow, for every man who wishes for a healthy body to iieln a healthy, active mind should be a golfer. Whether our invitation is accepted or otherwise, it will not alter the fact that golfing will go on, since more golf is played than any other game in this country.

Fashionable Wedding at Treherbert. DAVIES-COLLINS. On Wednesday morning, the 4th inst., the marriage was solemnised of Misp Gwen Collins (only daughter and child or Mrs. Collins, Britannia House, Ynys- Wen, and grand-daughter of the late Mr. and Mns. Davies is a well-known local oantone, and is one of the principal |oloista of the Rhondda Operatic Society. Jle has been a prominent figure in eis- teddfodio and other musical circles, having Carried off several championship prizes. As manager of the Co-operative Stores, ^reherbert, he is very highly esteemed by aU connected with that establishment. The ceremony was performed at Carmel Chapel, Treherbert, which had been deco- rated for the occasion. For nearly an ^our before the bride arrived, the chapel ^as fairly packed with people. The S^idegroom arrived with Mr. Hugh ihomaa (best man), brother of Mr. W. spencer Thomas, R.A.M.. another of the principal soloists of the Rhondda Operatic society. The bridal party drove to the church in three coaclies From Britannia House. Mr. David Lloyd (organist and choirmaster at St. Andrew's, Llwynypia) presided at the organ, and struck up as the bride entered the edifice and pro ceeded down the aisle, whilst the whole of the assembly stood on its feet. Miss Collins (the bride) looked radiantly beau- tiful attired in ivory satin, trimmed with Dutch lace, pearl, and silver sequin. She also wore a bridal veil of Brussels net, crowned by a coronet of orange blossoms. She carried a very beautiful shower bouquet of Odonto Crispuin. orchids, white carnations, lily of the valley, camellias, asparagus fern, and white heather (supplied by Messrs. Charles Walker and Sons, Pontypridd). Masters Haydn and Charlie Woosnam (nephews of bridegroom) acted as train bearers. They were smartly dressed in suits of grey, and carried exotic baskets of flowers. Miss Amy Emanuel, the bridesmaid (niece of bride), was prettily arrayed in pale blue eoline. She, also, carried a beautiful bouquet. In the absence of Mr. Alfred Evans (uncle of bride), Putney London, the bride was given away by Mr. John Gower, Pentwyn Villa, Treherbert. The Rev. J. Pethian Davies (Carmel) performed the ceremony, assisted by the Rev. D. Williams (Horeb). After signing the register, the couple left the church to the delightful strains of Mendelssohn's Wedding March," played by Mr, Lloyd, Rice and confetti were very liberally pelted upon them by their many friends and well-wishers, and outside the chapel they were greeted by the large crowd, which had failed to make its way into the chanel. The party then adjourned to Britannia House, where photos were taken. A reception was afterwards given by Mrs. Collins (bride's mother) to a large num- ber of guests. The wedding cake was a magnificent and costly work of art. It iwas. in three tiers, surmounted by a small marble statue, and stood at least four feet high. The cake was supplied by the Municipal Co-Operative Society, Man- chester. At the reception, congratulatory speeches were made by several prominent local gentlemen. The happy couple left Treherbert by the 1 p.m. train for London, the bride wearing a travelling costume of brown, with a hat of white Leghorn, trimmed with brown, and roses. The honeymoon is being spent in France. A costly and useful collection of pre- isents have been received from tenants, friends, relatives, &c. Her brother, Mr. Alfred Dallimore, acting as bridegroom's best man, her sister, Miss Edith Dalli- more, being bridesmaid.
