The" Leader" Election Telegrams.
The" Leader" Election Telegrams. Scenes Outside Our Offices. The, scenes outside our head officii at Tonypandy as the results are declared nightly, are animated in the extreme. Lalfee crowds, numbering thousands, assemble each evening, and patiently wait despite gusty squalls until the last result has been shown on the screen, and vehicular traffic is impeded. Each result is hailed with rousing cheers and counter- cheers, and loud groans are given vent to when a Conservative gain is announced. Sometimes the Conservative element is present in strong force, and vigorously acclaims every Government reverse. The scenes on Tuesday night were of a parti- cularly demonstrative character. At first a succession of Tory gains had a some- what depressing effect on the crowd, but when Swansea's magnificent triumph was announced there was a thunderous shout, which reverberated again and again in the still night air. Joy and disappoint- ment followed one another in quick turns. Bermondsey (Liberal gain) was received with deafening cheers, and so were Haggerston and Hoxton. The loss of Paddington North was deeply deplored, but there was a shout that rent the night air when Dundee's fine achievement was announced. On Wednesday evening there was a larger crowd than ever, and the splendid Liberal victories filing through set the crowd in good humour. Scotland and the North were firm for Free Trade, the depression in the lace trade was given as the reason for the reverse at Notting- ham, and the fate of the teachers' repre- sentative was awaited with anxiety. Still they come. Glasgow (Tradeston), Liberal gain (loud cheers) Cardiff, a mighty shout, mingled with some booing; Glas- gow (Camlachie), Tory gain (groans); Hackney North, another reverse (more groans); Hackney South, Bottomley in (a chorus, "Good old John Bull' "); Dept- ford, Labour seat retained; Carmarthen Boroughs, Wales still loyal; Denbigh Boroughs, phalanx broken (keen dis- armointment). In addition to the results, photographs of Mr.Lloyd George and. Mabon were greeted with a tremendous outburst of cheering. Mr. Edgar Jones' lineaments were next projected on the screen, amid a chorus of "The second Lloyd George," and "The man for Merthyr." Pictures, &c., were sandwiched in between, and the assembled thousands behaved them- selves like big children on a half-holiday. A picture of a well-known and popular local newsagent, smoking a pipe, was received with peals of laughter and shouts of The member for Coedymeibion. A question thrown on the screen, Mabon or Harold Lloyd—Which? was answered in a deafening chorus, Mabon." A re- quest to sino- "Hen Wiad fy Nhadau" was immediately complied with, and the crowd went home to bed and rest, to turn out four hours later to their more prosaic occupations.
Election Notes and News.
Election Notes and News. The Tory poster of The Englishman's Home stuck up in a. prominent position near Ystrad Station has brought a, rather sad verdict upon itself. Directly under- neath in large print appear the title, Temple of Lies," on a theatrical poster! Truth is sometimes found in strange places. Another unfortunate blunder on the part of the Tory organisation is the issuing of a pamphlet containing selec- tions of Robert Blatchford's doctrines. The object in view undoubtedly is to fill the minds of the electors with the dajigerist of Socialism and thus attempt to weaken the Progressive cause in the Rhondda. But is not Mr. Blatehford the author of the German Navy scare, &c.. which Tories have endeavoured to inflate as much as possible? The "Daily Mail" and Mr. Blatehford are united against the Liberal Government. Why did the Rhondda Tories issue the above panrnhlet ? A house divided against itself cannot stand."

Election Notes and News.
Electionitis at Cwmparc Electioneering is proceeding in almost lackadaisical fashion at Cwmparc, there being little of the zealous canvassing and palavering high jinks which seem to elec- trically surcharge the political atmosphere in other constituencies. Mabon held a meeting at Park Hall on Thursday even- ing last. and the large audience gave the old veteran an enthusiastic reception, and were not slow to signify that he com- manded their most complete confidence. The entire village has received the like- ness" of their favourite some time ago, and it is interesting to note that almost every window gives a place of honour to the card with the red dragon rampant. Mr. Lloyd's "card," tastefully emblazoned with the Union Jack, has also deluged the neighbourhood, and on other occa- sions and under happier auspices his keen and intellectual lineaments might win a smile from the susceptible collier. But Mabon, the tried and true, the erstwhile collier, the tactician and mediator, holds undisputed sway in their affections, count- ing the perplexing claims of Free Trade and Tariff Reform but little to sway the conflict. Support for Mi*. Brace. At Saron, Williamstown, on Tuesday night last, a meeting was held in support of the candidature of Mr. Wm. Brace for South Glamorgan. Mr. John Thomas, } Williamstown, presided, and Mr. J. Rees submitted a resolution expressing confi- dence in Mr. Brace, and pledging the meeting to do all in their power to return him triumphantly on the day of the poll. Mr. Luther Thomas seconded the resolu- tion, and was supported by the following speakers: —Messrs. R. Pearce (election agent), Tom Smith (Trealaw), W. Rich- ards (Tv Clyd, Trealaw), and the Rev. W. Williams, Tonypandy, and was car- ried unanimously. The meeting was full of enthusiasm, and the speakers' main point was the abolition of the House of Lords. The Budget and Tariff Reform and other minor points were also dealt with. j An Appeal to the Electors of the Rhondda Division, To the Editor of the Rhondda Leader." Sir,—In conversation with a large number of voters, I find so much uncer- tainty of attitude .at the present critical juncture that 1 venture, through you, to address to them and others this appeal, in which are set forth the issues that demand from us the most careful and serious consideration. One or another fears that the Budget will pave the way towards Socialism. If this be so, how is it that the Socialists have put forth a candidate to oppose the Liberals wher- ever the opportunity has occurred? And to those who are afflicted with the Socialist nightmare, I ask them to study Socialism for themselves, and they, will see that its root principles are quite different from the reasonable measures of reform which are part of the Liberal policy. Very briefly, I wish to draw their atten- tion from the imaginary to the real. Take the German Scare. Who are the panic- stricken? The Tory leaders and speakers. And bear in mind that panic is precisely the quality in human nature that leads to hasty, ill-considered, precipitate action, and I am not surprised that from many sources in Germany to-day comes the message to us, that unless a Liberal Government is returned the existing rela- tions between the two nations will be seriously endangered. Surely, this is a warning to business men. For what becomes of our world-wide trade and ship- ping interests if the Scaremongers" will succeed in their nefarious efforts to- wards disturbance? Every voter in the Rhondda can give the right answer at once, that those interests will suffer an injury. when we consider the immense volume of trade happily existing between Germany and Great Britain. We are well furnished with speeches. Tariff Reform on the one hand, and Free Trade ) on the other. What is our reply in the Rhondda. Division to this? We know what Free Trade has done and will do for us; but go back to the Hungry Forties" and see what Tariff meant in those days. It meant anything to the toler but comfort. And what have we to gain therefrom? If there is a gain, it is so small that we must get a microscope before we can see it. On Saturday last appeared in the Press a grave warning from the lips of none other than the chairman of the Cunard Steamship Com- pany. He pointed out that under the old policy of Free Trade Liverpool had grown to greatness. Under the new policy of Tariff Reform we can, at the best, gain no advantage, at the worst we shall see our foreign trade dwindle, while at the same time the expense of handling it will be increased. Our inter- national trade has progressed at a far greater rate than that of any Protection- ist country in the world." Well, to maintain this, all we have to do is to remain true to the party which has already done so much for Free Trade. —I am, &c., JOHN HAMMOND. 10, Salem Terrace, Llwynypia.
