Tivoli. Pentre
Tivoli. Pentre A good collection of items appears on the Tivoli programme this week, and patrons need not cavil at the quality pro- vided. A return visit of Ivan Tchernoff's ponies, hounds, terriers and pigeons is certainly welcomed. This is probably one of the best sporting acts of the present day. Included among the ponies is a famous musical pony, Hans," the object of much interest and subject of much in- teresting discussion. The entire per- formance is a treat well worth witness- ing, and the clever feats of Hans are marvellous. The hounds and terriers show evidence of careful training, and so also do the pigeons. Miss Amy Ander- son and Company present the great comedy scena, Troubles On and Off the Stage." This is well done, but is hardly successful as The Banana Queen pre- sented at the Tivoli some time ago. The lady has two male partners, who unfor- tunately commence to quarrel in tne fiiaatG dmaing room whiU» Amoving the colouring from their faces. The talk is highly amusing, but there is a settlement and peace with honour in a short time. The combined and individual singing is good. One turn which closely follows the above from a popular point of view was given by Arthur Ferriss, the new come- dian. He is a good vocalist and a splen- did actor. His second song introduced alliterative phrases galore, and evoked much applause. Ida Rene is a charming little lady conjurer who secures approval soen after her appearance on the stage. There are other good turns by Godfrey James, well known as a singing collier, hailing from Nine Miles Point, near New- port; Ray Beavis, an unique conjurer; Veda Carl, a good comedienne; and the Canmarths, in a musical act. The Tivolisoope has an amusing series of pic-1 tures of good quality.
Hippodrome, Tonypandy.j
Hippodrome, Tonypandy. Quite the latest thing in living pictures is shown at the Hippo this week, in the reproduction on the screen of various incidents in Sir Ernest Shackleton's dash for the South Pole. The desolate wastes of the eternal iceland are vividly por- trayed, and so realistic is the effect that one is wont to draw up his coat-collar and sigh for a hot Scotch." The films are 2,500 feet long, and conclude with ? pictorial representation of the intrepid esplorers' arrival and reception at Dover. Among the varieties Tom Jones, the inimitable Welsh comedian, occupies first nlace. His songs are distinctly funny, nis dialect is Welsh with the strong, pungent odour of the leek fresh upon it, whilst his patter is uproariously funny. Frank Hardie's Company, in the Ameri- can sketch, "Pedlar Sam," is a strong dramatic portrayal of a Yankee contre- temps. The acting throughout is fresh and good, whilst the gussitement is by no means to be desnised. Bert- Lytton, comedian; Dainty Doreta, an accom- plished comedienne and sabot dancer; Will Nosam, the coloured coon; and Tommp Clifford, with a ventriloquial entertainment above the ordinary merit, are other features of a good bul.
Palace Porth.
Palace Porth. Topping the bill at the Palace this week is a remarkably clever turn and one that is an instant success. Lady Mansel and her Juveniles are doubtless one of the best shows of their kind touring, pos- sessing as they do some of the smallest and most talented children appearing on the variety stage. The juveniles are cer- tainly par excellence. Beautiful voices, artistic singing uncommonly skilful in the art of dancing, they are showered with rounds of applause. Quite a sen- sation is caused by Karsy's Giant Myria- phone, which is truly a wonderful instru- ment. As the popular songs and other songs are being produced, the audience is easily captured, and demands for encores are the order. The Two BSrrols, acrobats, are exceedingly and greatly appreciated. Gus Onlaw Trio, Parisian novelty wire performers, are also skilful to a degree. Their feats upon the wire evoke loud applause. L. B. Athol, in an artistio voice production, Dreamland," is also in great demands Hetty Knight, comedienne, is very charming, and her greatly appre- ciated. Joa Dale, light comedian, i smart, end hia patter exceptionally so; Tiny Arnold's performance is exceedingly good; whilst Charles Woodward, light comedian, contributes a good item. The Palascope pictures, as usual, are vp to the best standard, being highly interest- ing and amusiag. The show "is a very good one.
Theatre Royal, Tonypandy.
Theatre Royal, Tonypandy. The attraction this week at the Royal is the representation of the famous Welsh- Summers Fight on the biograph. The films are excellent, and the progress of the contest from start ta finish is remark- ably clearly shown, and witnessed by en- thusiastic audiences at each performance, which is given twice nightly. Other up- to-date pictures are given in addition, making up an excellent evening's enter- tainment. There will be an additional performance at 4 o'clock on Saturday afternoon.
Cardiff Em pi re
Cardiff Em pi re Reano and his famous Band pay a wel- come return visit to Cardiff Empire on Monday next, and should be accorded a hearty reception. "To-To," the mysterious musician, pre- sented by Mile. Lucia, will be submitted next week. On the stage stands an isolated armchair, Mile. Lucia appears, sings her entrance song, in which she announces that she has brought her own accompanist with her. Then To-To, a little doll, is brought on the stage and placed in the armchair. At the same moment To-To becomes alive and imitates the movements of a man, and on a zither being brought to him he accompanies Mile. Lucia's songs with great skill. After the performance is over, the head of the doll is taken off to show that no living being is concealed within. The famous Saschoff Troupe of Russian singers and dancers; Edith Heron-Brown, in songs at the piano; T. B. Vaughan and John Lawson's Company in The Bosun's Mate," a farce by W. W. Jacobs; Chas. Lewis, novelty ventriloquist; and Bros. Diamond, chair jumpers, are other attractions.
Opening of Olypmia, Pentre.
Opening of Olypmia, Pentre. day evening demonstrated the extensive manner in which the proprietors are catering for the devotees of roller skating. The building is a large one, easily ap- proached, and very central. The interior is very nicely painted and well arranged, being replete with ganery, grand stand, bandstand, cafe and refreshment rooms, cloakrooms, &c. The floor itself is of rock maple wood, of proved quality and suitability for this purpose. The rink is much larger than any other in the Valley —in fact, a hookey match between two teams of seven players will be contested on Thursday evening. The Olympia was practically ready for the opening ceremony on Thursday after- noon, and on Thursday evening we hope that the Treorchy and Pentre nurses will obtain a well-deserved benefit, the pro- ceeds being for the Nursin-m Association. We congratulate the owners, architects and managers upon their success.
"The Church In Wales.
"The Church In Wales. In a letter by the Rev. S. B. John-in the correspondence columns of our issue of the 4th inst., we regret we published a statement referring to the Rev. Mere- dith Morris, vicar of Clydach Vale, in the following words: — He (the Vicar) is a member of the English Church Union; he (the (Vicar) has a branch of the E.C.U. at St. Thomas'. The avowed object of this Union is Re-union with Rome.' We have received a letter from Mr. Richard Hill-Male, the vicar's solicitor, calling attention to the alleged libel, and in compliance with such letter we take this the earliest opportunity of un- reservedly withdrawing the assertion, which, we admit, is absolutely without foundation, and for its regrettable inser- tion we tender our apology. We altogether dissociate ourselves from any feeling in the controversy, and the statement was only permitted to be pub- lished because in the hurry of going to Press we mistook it for an expression of the -writer's opinion.

Treorchy. An inquest was held on the body of Mr. Wm. Salisbury at the Institute on Wednesday, when death was attributed to heart failure. A verdict was returned accordingly.

Empire, Tonypandy
Empire, Tonypandy Eugene Stratton, the star coon, is a huge favourite at the Empire this week, as he is with other audiences in all parts of the world. Mr. Stratton has made the coon business a speciality of his own, ar*l has transformed the business into a fine art. From his first appearance to his exit amidst insistent demands for eucore, he held all entranced as with a magic wand. His various impersonations were all exceedingly well done, notably in the last song, where he woos a dainty but hard-hearted demoiselle whilst the minions of the law are hot on his track for horse stealing. But why paint the lily-or rather, in his case-why ebonise the negro? Stratton is Stratton alone- I_nuff Bed! Another turn that is favour- i ably received are the New Macs, come- dians and dancers of a high order, and patterers with plenty of the right stuff. The boxing bout which rounds off the -fcrara is a 5ide-splitter and -well worth. seeing. Senor Orduna is a tenor with a great reputation. His Spanish songs are excellently sung. He has a rich voice, over which he has admirable control. A foolish section of the audience on Monday night deserve severe reprobation for their dis- courteous manner. It is the acme of bad taste to laugh at a song when sung in a language that is perhaps unkno\^| to most of us. We regret that a Rhondda audience should have lent itself to this sorry exhibition. The Brilliants are two young ladies whose gifts really merit their nomenclature. Their performance on the xylophone of difficult masterpieces was worth the admission price charged. Henry and Tyler, in their trick and comedy cycling, was another turn that secured its deserved applause. Tom Franks, ventriloquist of no mean order; Angela Ward, a dainty comedienne; and the Empiroscope, with splendid pictures, Complete the progt'arjime.
