Ogmore Vale I.L.P. Social.—A social organised by the I.L.P. was held on Saturday last at Tynewydd Council Schools, which were suitably decorated for the occasion. The usual excellent spread was provided, and a good number sat down. Tea removed, the evening was enjoyably spent in dancing, cards, and other indoor amuse- ments. Mr. W. H. Caple presided at the piano, with Mr. Jack Davies as M.C. The successful lady in the whist drive was Miss A. Jones. Hockey.—On Wednesday last, a match was played on the Crossing Field between unrepresentative sides of the Wednesdays and Saturdays. The latter won by 3 goals to nil. The scorers were J. Davies, W. Lewis and H. Jenkins. On Saturday, Ogmore ladies entertained Nantymoel, and a pleasant game ended in a draw, neither side scoring. Miss A. Evans, for the visitors, played a, fine game, and must have scored on several occasions if better supported.

Wattstown. A very successful tea and concert were held at St. Thomas' Mission Church on Thursday last. The tables were very' prettily laid, and the whole atmosphere imparted a feeling of comfort and enjoy- ment. Presiding at the various tables were —Mrs. Evan Morgan, Mrs. Draisey, Mrs. Davey, and Mrs. Tom Jones. Assist- ing these ladies were —Mrs. Kent, Mrs. Beale, Mrs. Ridley, and the Misses Ada Preece and Bella Jones. Lending valu- able assistance also were Mrs. J. Ll. Davies, Mrs. Davies (Police Station), Mrs. Grower, Mrs. Wiltshire, Mrs. Clapp, Mrs. Healing, and Mrs. Perrow. The Rev. J. LI. Davies, B.A. (curate), as usual, super- intended the whole of the arrangements for the function. The entertainment was P-iso very enjoyable. Opened with a yianoforte solo by Master Henry Draisey, the programme was made up of songs by the Misses Mary Jones, Dorothy Jones, Edna Mav Preece, and Mrs. Jones. A solo was also contributed by Mr. David Thomas, the well-known tenor. Other musical items were mouth-organ selections by Mr. Willie Kent, and excellent selec- tions on the gramophone of Mr. J. A. Davey. Recitations were given by the Misses Mary Jones, Elsie Stroud, Elsie Thorne, Marian Macintyre, Pugsley, and Violet Wiltshire, Ed. Preece, C. Wilt- shire, Arthur Kent, Joseph Morgan and Willie Kent. The Rev. J. Ll. Davies ably presided. A lecture that was highly edifying and interesting was delivered by the Rev. Phillip Jones, of Llanelly, at Nebo (C.M.), Wattstown, on Thursday evening last. The subject was Edward Matthews," the famous old Welsh preacher, whose original character and quaint oddities were very cleverly portrayed by the lec- turer. Mr. David Fenwick, Tylorstown, presided over a portion of the meeting, but Dr. T. H. Morris, the appointed chairman, arrived later and took up his duties.

Porth. With deep regret we chronicle the death of Mr. James Thomas Price, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Price, of 2, Cross Street, Porth, which took place on Wed- nesday afternoon last, after a long and painful illness. The deceased, who was onlv 24 years of age. was very well known throughout the district and was highly respected. The interment took place on Saturday afternoon last at Llethrddu Cemetery, the Rev. J. Edwards officiat- ing. There were present numerous rela- tives and friends. The 20th Century Equitable Friendly Society were also represented., A large number of wreaths were sent by friends. The Rev. J. Williams, Pontypridd, officiated at the P.S.A. service held at the John Pugh Memorial Hall on Sunday afternoon last. Mr. Wm. Davies (tenor), Cymmer, late of the Leeds Festival Con- certs, contributed some beautiful solos. Mr. David Davies (baritone), Ynyshir, also acquitted himself well and enhanced his reputation. Master James Gilmore contributed a few selections with great effect on the violin. The meeting was highly satisfactory.

Nantymoel. Church Socialist League.—A branch of the above League has now been formed at Nantymoel, and Mr. G. H. Bibbings, B.A., of Leicester, was the first to address a public meeting under its auspices on Thursday, the 4th inst. Mr. W. Dyas presided, and referred to remarks made by the Rev. David Davies. of Penarth, who recently spoke under the auspices of the Liberal and Labour Party at the Workmen's Hall. Mr. Davies said that the electors of Mid-Glamorgan should support Sir S. T. Evans because he was a Welshman, and no one could under- stand the aspirations of Welshmen like a Welshman. Mr. Dyas said that the Solicitor-General had nothing to recom- mend him at the coming General Elec- tion. But," added the speaker, "accept- ing the logic of Mr. Davies' remarks, that no one could represent a class of people like one of that class, we must remember that Mid-Glamorgan was a mining con- j stituency, and most of the electors were miners; therefore, no one could under- stand the aspiration of miners or repre- sent them like a miners' agent (cheers). Mr. Bibbings followed and gave an in- spiring address. Hall Committee.—The first meeting of the recently elected Hall Council was held on Wednesday of last week at the Hall Committee Room. The following were chosen to act as officials for the forth- coming year:—Chairman, Dr. D. J. Thomas, J.P.; vice-chairman, Mr. T. J. Job: secretary, Mr. John Rees; trea- surer, Mr. John Owen, M.E., Ocean Col- liery deputy treasurer, Mr. John E. Price (clerk), Ocean Colliery; and Messrs. W. Roberts and John D. Morris, auditors. Billiard, Library, and Build- ing Sub-Committees were elected, each committee comprising of seven members. Billiard Match.—Under the auspices of the Mid-Glamorgan Workmen's Institutes Billiard League, Nantymoel played Ponty- cymmer in a League match at the Insti- tute on Saturday last. Liberal-Labour AssocIation-The monthly meeting of the Nantymoel Liberal-Labour Association was held at the Committee Room, Workmen's Hall, on Friday even- ing of last week. Mr; Job Baker (presi- dent of the Association) occupied the chair, and there was a good muster of members. The Rev. H. R. Byatt read an excellent and admirably conceived paper on Stars of the Liberal Firma- ment." The rev. gentleman selected as stars Cobden, Bright, Gladstone, Banner- man, Asquith, and Lloyd George, and his graphic recitals of the characteristics of each charmed his auditors in a high degree. In the subsequent discussion, Mr. W. J. Harries, Rev. M. J. Mills, Councillor Evan Griffiths, Rev. J. T. Davies and the president referred in eulogistic terms to Mr. Byatt's paper, and expressed their deep gratitude to him for such an able review. All the speakers referred with regret to Mr. Byatt's im- pending departure for Dalston London, where all united in wishing that God's richest blessings would attend his labours in his new sphere. On the motion of Mr. Lewis Griffiths, seconded by Mr. T. Jacob Jones, B.A., supported by the secretary and president, a most cordial and hearty vote of thanks was accorded the rev. gentleman for his eminent services. Fire Outbreak.—What might have proved a serious conflagration had it not been detected in time by the promptitude of the headmaster-Mr. James Jones— occurred at the Boys' Council School, Nantymoel, on Saturday evening last. Dense volumes of smoke were observed issuing from the main room, and after admission had been gained by Mr. Jones and Mr. Tom Lloyd (engineer, Ocean Col- liery), who was called in by Mr. Jones from the street, it was found that through some cause the woodwork around the fireplace had ignited and would have developed soon into a serious fire. Mr. Jones, whose residence adjoins the schools, with Mr. Lloyd, took prompt action, and after a quarter of an, hour's work suc- ceeded in putting the fire out. The schools-boys' and girls'—are a large block, and are situated in a. populous centre. The Urban Council are just now establishing local fire brigades in the different localities in their area.

Penny Readings.—The members of the Young People's Mutual Improvement Society of Bethany (C.M.) Church, Nanty- moel, held their penny readings on Satur- day evening last, under the presidency of the worthy pastor, the Rev. J. M. Phillips. These meetings are organised by Mr. Edward Lee, and, judging from the crowded audiences they are evidently greatly appreciated. The adjudicators were: —Music, Mr. Wm. Evans; litera- ture, Mr. T. Jacob Jones, B.A. Miss Eunice Phillips presided at the organ. The awards were: —Girls' solo, divided between Misses R. Miles and E. Hawke; freehand drawing, Master H. Owens; open solo (tenor or baritone), Mr. Wm. Thomas; spelling, Mr. Edward Davies; duet, divided between Mr. and Mrs. W. Exley, and Mr. Wm. Thomas and Mrs. T. James; first sight reading, Mr. A. Morgans; hymn-tune (competitors to be over 30 years of age), Mr. Wm. Thomas; impromptu speech, divided between Messrs. T. Morgans and A. Morgans. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the chairman and adjudicators, on the motion of Mr. Walter Exley, seconded by Mr. Wm. Denley, after which the Doxology was sung. Bachelors' Tea.—A bachelors' tea was held at Horeb (E.Bi.) Vestry on Thurs- day last, the proceeds being in aid of Horeb Church funds. The attendance was exceptionally large, and the catering was highly appreciated by the guests. The following gentlemen presided at the tables: —Messrs. Lowe, Cross, Thomas, Joiner, Phillips, Evans, Stephens, Bert Allen, Bob Allen, and Davies, assisted by Messrs. Phillips, John, G. Gregory, W. Davies and Ernie Evans. The fol- lowing attended to the cutting of bread and bnttpr and cake: -Messrs. -.Lewis, M. Allen, Morris, Francis, T. Jones, J. Jones, Coates, and Wm. Cousins, while Mr. Thomas Lewis attended to the brew- ing. The orize for the best laid out table was awarded to Messrs. John Phil- lips and Wm. Evans, with Master Gurwen Gregory as waiter, upon the adjudication of Mrs. Mathias and Mrs. Lloyd. The Bachelors' Committee are to be compli- mented upon the excellent results of their labour. Mr. Daniel Gregory (Wyndham Schools) acted as secretary. Death.—We regret to report the death of Mr. Thomas Jones, of 7, Park Street, Nantymoel, who nassed away on Satur- day evening, after an illness lasting for some weeks. He leaves a widow and one child to mourn his loss. The interment took place on Thursday last at Blaenogwr Cemetery, when a large number attended the final rites. The Rev. H. R. Byatt officiated at the house and graveside. Dinam (C.M.) Literary Society.—The Young People's Society in connection with Dinam (C.M.) Church, Nantymoel, were entertained" to a most instructive and interesting lecture on Wednesday last on Dr. Lewis Edwards of. Bala," by Mr. J. W. Jones, Llanharran Street, Nantymoel. Mr. T. Jacob Jones, B.A., presided, and a large number of members were present. The following gentlemen took part in the discussion on the paper: —The Rev. J. T. Davies. Messrs. John Edwards, John M. Jones, John R. Evans and Edwin Jenkins. A vote of thanks, proposed by Mr. J. T. Richards and seconded by Mr. John Edwards, concluded a pleasant evening. The lecture was illustrated by a series of amusing lantern views, mani- pulated by the Rev. J. T. Davies, 01 Dinam, while the onerous duty of lec- turer was taken by the Rev. J. M. Phillips, Bethany. The entertainment was greatly enjoyed by a large crowd of juveniles, who showed their appreciation by hearty rounds of laughter and loud applause. Solos, duets, and choruses were rendered by the choir, under the able conductorship of Mr. Wm. Lloyd. Miss Eunice Phillips ably presided at the organ. The lantfern (kindly lent for the occasion by Dinam C.M. Church) was well manipulated by the Rev. J. T. Davies and Mr. Jones. The connective reading was excellently done by the Rev. J. W. Bryant. The Rev. J. M. Phillips, the esteemed pastor of Bethany, presided. I Re-opening Services.—The re-opening I services in connection with Hope (E.C.) Church, Blaenogwy, took place on Sun- day last, when the Rev. T. Hirwain Jen- kins, the ponular pastor of Hope, and the Rev. W. Dyfodwg Davies, Morriston, preached stirring and eloquent discourses to large and enthusiastic congregations. The singing of special anthems and hymns by the choir, under the skilful leadership of Mr. John Isaac, was inspiring. Mr. Samuel Gillard, at the organ presided in his usual effective manner. the sacred new edifice looks most attractive, and fills a much-desired need in this nonulous part of Nantymoel. The pastor and church are to he highly praised for the magnificent success that has attended their onerous and energetic labours. The services will be continued during the next two weeks, when the ministers of the Valley will assist at the various services. The collections towards the building fund have already reached a gratifying sum.

Cwmparc. The funeral of the late Wm. Higgon took place on Tuesday last, amid general expressions of regret and sympathy. Deceased leaves a widow and six children to mourn his loss, and his untimely death is all the more pathetic inasmuch as deceased had worked very little during the last five years owing to ill-health. The funeral ceremonies were performed by the Rev. James Davies (Salem), assisted by the Revs. D. C. Jones, Penygraig; D. Phillips, Penrhiwfer; and T. Tissington, vicar of Cwmparc. Jones superintended the arrangements. Mr. Wm. Butler's choir brought off a splendid achievement at Morriston by securing the first prize for a rendering of Ar lan'r Iorddonen ddofn," seven choirs competing. The adjudicator referred in terms of high praise to the splendid quality and balance of the voices, and complimented Mr. Butler upon the ex- cellent control exercised upon his ohoir. The party returned comfortably and in high spirits, in spite of a number of ir- repressible young ladies having to press a furniture van into service in order to catch the train home from Swansea.

Marvellous Cures at Ystrad. At the invitation of Prof. Vero, the Rhondda herbalist and electro medical specialist, 108, William Street, Ystrad, a Leader Pressman called at the estab- lishment of Mr. George Player, Llwyny- pia, on Monday last to verify the genuine- ness of his cure by Prof. Vero. A Correction.—In the report of the recent Ynyshir Eisteddfod that appeared in these columns, an error inadvertently crept in. It appears that the cup given to the successful male voice party was the gift of Mr. John Thomas, M.E. (Fern- bank), and not of Mr. W. J. Thomas, J.P. (Brynawel), as stated.
