Last Sunday, anniversary preaching meetings were held at Salem (W.B.) Qhapel, when the Rev. T. Williams (Twrfab), Aberdare, officiated. Contrary to the usual custom, services were not held on the Monday, owing to the Bap- tist Gymanfa being held at Noddfa, Tre- orchy, Large congregations attended on Sunday and the preaching was much enjoyed. The free lecture arranged by the Insti- tute Committee for last Monday evening in the Park Hall duly took place, but coinciding with the visit of the Right Hon. Lloyd George to Treorchy, the attendance unfortunately was very dis- appointing, there being hardly a hun- dred persons present. The lecturer was Mr. Dennis Hird, M.A., late principal of Ruskin College, Oxford, and he had a most interesting subject, Ruskin the Seer." He gave a, most interesting biography of the famous prose writer and and emphasised the special circumstances and proclivities of charac- ter which led to his epoch-making adop- tion of the cause of Socialism. An interesting ceremony took place at the Park and Dare Workmen's Institute on Friday evening last, the Committee holding a special meeting to do honour to Mr. John Evans, who as hon. treasurer has rendered invaluable services to the Institute for a period extending over thirteen years. Mr. Tom Herbert, in the chair, remarked that it behoved them, to recognise the admirable manner in which Mr. Evans had performed his office, and they were assembled to ask his accept- ance of a token of their appreciation. This took the form of a gold watch, which was formally handed over by Mr. Evan Middleton, M.E., to the accompaniment of an excellent speech. He pointed out that this was not in the nature of a present, but the reward for duty un- assumingly and conscientiously, done. Messrs. Howell Price, Wm. Jones, J. Davies and Gwilym Jones also spoke, Mr. Evans suitably responding. Mr. Cadivor Thomas late of Park Schools, and now serving the L.C.C., last week won a handsome money prize in "Tit-Bits." We heard a perfect pun last week, which, strangely enough, emanated from the pulpit. Possibly it was not original, but hoping to bequeath a ripple of laugh- ter to a grateful posterity, we hasten to chronicle it. The rev. gentleman was emphasising the importance of physical fitness in relation to a sunshiny tempera- ment, and supplied the following answer to the oft-asked question, "Is life worth living?" Chapel held its annual tea party on Thursday last, which is synonymous with saying it was a com- plete success, as the fair sisters of that congregation have a traditional aptitude for selling tickets. Llwynypia. We regret to report the death of Mrs. Mary Mathias, wife of Mr. William Mathias, residing at 6, Rhondda Terrace, Llwynypia. Deceased, who had only been ailing about a month, passed away on Friday, the 8th inet., at the age of 61 years. She was a native of Bryn, near Maesycwmmer, and came to reside in Mid-Ithondda. 26 years ago. She was a faithful member of Salem Chapel, Llwynypia, and an earnest worker in con- nection with the Sunday School. Her husband, Mr. Wm. Mathias, is well known I in the locality, having been employed as saddler at the Glamorgan Collieries for the past 28 years. The funeral, which took place on Wednesday, the 13th inst., was attended by a large number of friends. The interment took place at Llethrddu Cemetery, Trealaw, the Rev. T. G. Jenkyn, pastor of Salem, perform- ing the final rites. The chief mourners included: —Mr. J. D. Mathias (son), Messrs. J. Evans and W. Davies (sons-in- law), Messrs. W. Freeman and G. Davies (nephews); first coach—Mr. Wm. Mathias 'husband), Mrs. Lizzie Ann Evans, Mrs. Mary Jane Davies and Miss Maggie Mathias (daughters), Mrs. J. D. Mathias (daughter-in-law), and the Rev. T. G. Jenkyn; second coach-Mrs. M. Davies (cousin), Mrs. M. Worthing, (cousin), Miss Maggie Davies and Mrs. M. Williams (nieces), Miss Davies, Caerphilly (niece), Miss Maud Mathias and Master Trevor Evans (grandchildren); third coach-Mr. W. James, Crumlin (nephew), Mr. Wm. Jones (brother-in-law).. Mr. T. D. Wil- liams, Cardiff (nephew), Mr. Jos. Lewis, Blackwood (cousin) Mr. A. Russell (bro- ther-in-law), and Mr. Thos. Davies, Porth (cousin). The fourth and fifth coaches contained the Sunday School class of deceased. The coffin was surmounted by beautiful wreaths, sent by the following: —Husband and children; Mrs. William Jones (sister); Mrs. W. James, Crumlin (niece), Sunday School Class; and one from the Llwynypia Football Club and also from the Committee of the Club, of which Mr. J. Mathias is an enthusiastic supporter. The undertaking arrange- ments were in the hands of Messrs. A. Williams and Sons. Accident.—On Monday, the 11th inst., Mr. Howell Cuthbertson held an inquest on the body of John Price, of Garn Road, Maesteg, fireman, who was suffocated under a fall which occurred at the Maes- teg Merthyr Colliery. The manager, Mr. Peter Allen, said he was with Price after he'had completed his round. He went with him to an airway, where there had been a fall, to advise him the best way to clear it. He had not left Price a couple of seconds, when he heard another fall. He then went for assistance to clear the fall, and obtained the help of two workmen who were working close at hand. They tried to reach deceased with ,a scraper, and after a short time they could see his body, but another fall came and completely hid his body from sight. The body was eventually recovered about 4.30 on Thursday afternoon. Dr. Kirkby said that there were no bruises on the body externally, but the cause of death was due to suffocation. A verdict was returned accordingly. Death.—On Monday last week, at Llwydarth Road, Maesteg, Harriet Howells, aged 52, housekeeper for Mr. Benjamin John, was found dead in her bedroom. The next-door neighbour went to call her about 7 o'clock that morning. and receiving no reply, called upon Mrs. John, the mother of Benjamin John. They found deceased dead on the floor, partly undressed. She appeared in her usual health the previous night. Death is stated to be due to heart disease. THE GREAT WELSH REMEDY.

A series of lectures and concerts have been arranged by Libanus and Ebenezer for the young people. The pastor of Ebenezer, the Rev. Rowland Hughes, B.D., is an energetic worker, and has already signified his willingness to deliver some lectures during the season. Last week, Mrs. Rees, wife of Mr. John Rees, Vivian Street, died from the effects of salts of lemon. At the inquest, a verdict of Suicide during temporary insanity was returned. On Wednesday last* Bertie Bishop was injured at No. 7 Colliery. Dr. Phillips, Libanus, delivered an eloquent and instructive lecture on The New Theology on Tuesday evening at Libanus (C.M.) Chapel. Councillor Smith occupied the chair. The half-yearly meetings of Horeb (W.B.) Chapel were held on Saturday, Sunday and Monday last. The Revs. D. Llew. Morris (Ogwy), Pengam, and T. The little model lifeboats were once more very much in evidence on Saturday last. All the houses were visited by chil- dren soliciting subscriptions on behalf of the National Lifeboat Institution. Harvest festival services were held at St. David's Church, Ton, on Thursday and Sunday last. The building was artistically (decorated by willing hands with fruits, vegetables, &c. The special preachers were the Revs. J. A. Lewis, Minor Canon of Llandaff Cathedral: J. Sinnet Jones, vicar of Mountain Ash; and D. John Thomas, Tonyrefail. A special children's service was conducted on Sunday afternoon by Mr. Thomas. The offertories were all devoted to the. Church Pastoral Aid Society. At the English Congregational Church on Sunday, harvest thanksgiving services were held. Special sermons were delivered by the Rev. J. T. Rhys, of Aberaman (secretary of the East Glamorgan Con- gregational Sunday School Union). The Rev. J. Stitt Wilson, M.A., the Socialist orator, again visited the district and delivered an address at Siloam, Gelli, on Tuesday, the 12th inst. The many friends and admirers of Mr. T. Davies, Ton, better known as Cenech," will be pleased to learn that after a short period of study at Ponty- pridd, he has been successful in passing an examination which gave him an entrance into Brecon College. Mr. Davies is a clever and most successful poet, having carried off numerous prizes at different eisteddfodau in Wales, his greatest achievement being the winning of the Gwent Eisteddfod chair. Cenech has left for Brecon, where he will pursue his studies for the ministry. Doubtless there is a brilliant career before this self- educated young man. On Sunday last, half-yearly meetings were held in connection with Hebron (W.B.). The special preachers for the occasion were the Revs. Richard Owen, Pembrey, and T. Morgans, Llanelly. We are pleased to hear that there is a very successful class in Welsh at Tony- pandy School this session. There are six- teen in the Elementary Class itself. Bethel (E.B.) Church, Tonypandy, held their annual tea on Thursday last. This year it was decided to make a special effort to realise t50 and it is pleasing to note that the proceeds of the tea and concert will not be far short of the amount aimed at. Upwards of 600 people sat at the tables and enjoyed the bounti- ful spread prepared for them. In the evening, an. excellent concert was given before a large audience. Rhys) touching the death of William Payne" mason (53), 84, Court Street, Tonypandy. Ann Payne, deceased's widow, said that her husband complained of illness soon after retiring on Sunday night, and died shortly after. Dr. James O'Neill attributed death to an affection of the heart, and a verdict was returned accordingly. Harvest thanksgiving services were held at St. Peter's Church, Nantymoel, on Sunday and Monday last. The sacred edifice was prettily decorated with flowers, fruit and vegetables by a, number of willing helpers. Appropriate and edify- ing sermons in Welsh were preached on Sunday by the Rev. Joseph Morgan, B.A., vicar of Hirwain, and on Monday evening by the Rev. D. J. Jones, M.A., vicar of Port Talbot. On Sunday after- noon, the beautiful church was crowded to the doors, and in every possible space additional seats were placed, and the ser- vices throughout were largely attended. The musical nart of the service was very well rendered by the choir, led by Mr. Richard James. Miss Ellen Williams ably presided at the organ. Success.—Mr. William Ernest Thomas, son of Mr. Gwilym Thomas, contractor, Nantymoel, has successfully passed his final examination as a trained certificated master, and has obtained distinctions in music and mathematics. Mr. Thomas, who was trained at Southampton Col- lege, is to be complimented upon his success. Young Liberals.—At a meeting of the Young Liberals, held at the Committee Room of the Workmen's Hall on Tuesday evening, Mr. 'G. R. Anderson read an excellent paper on "Free Trade." O. Silverstone and Henry Wright pre- sented a thrilling drama, entitled The Nihilist," which was greatly appreciated.
