Theatre Royal, Tonypandy.
Theatre Royal, Tonypandy. Lovers of good drama cannot do better than pay a visit to the Royal this week, where Mr. T. Arthur Jones' company are giving performances of his successful play, "When Other Lips." The work through- out is animated and enjoyable, and it is Significant that the popular parts of the house are well patronised, and the applause frequent, Mr. T. A. Jones takes the part of Ted Daunton with earnest- ness and fervour, while Mr. Juan D' Alberti gives a successful interpretation of the character of Mordaunt." the villain of the play. The Ruth Lingley" of Miss Marie Daventry shows some bril- liant expositions of fine acting, and the whole of the company sustain their parts !in a most creditable manner, and the staging throughout is excellent. Next week, Mr. Millar Anderson's drama, "For Her Husband's Sake," will be staged, and we are informed that Messrs, Armitage and Leigh, who recently brought 118 Lucky Durham," which was so much appreciated by local playgoers, will visit Tonypandy with two more of their magnincent productions, viz., Leah Kleschila and With Edged Tools." Both these plays have earned the greatest compliments over three Con- tinents, and have been received with rapture by even the fastidious London audiences, The companies presenting these plays are the strongest ever sent into Wales, and have packed the theatres at Cardiff, Swansea, Newport and other centres, where they have been four or five times. Full details of the date and Qaste will be given later,
Palace, Porth.
Palace, Porth. Topping the bill at the Palace is Tom Leamoro; comedian and dancer, in his latest successes, The Potman," "Lizer," and "Rufus waiting for Mary Ann." Leamore, who is a good vocalist, with catchy songs and amusing patter, is accorded quite an ovation, and is respon- sible for uproarious laughter. His dancing is unusually eccentric and evokes loud applause. For skill on cycles the Daunton Shaw Troupe will take a lot of whacking. The marvellous feats performed by this troupe are probably unequalled by any other troupe of trick cyclists appearing before the cm-tain. For daintiness and charm Queenie May is surely the prize packet. This young lady, though prac- tically a juvenile, is an accomplished artist. Her singing is very fine and wins approbation. Gillin, unique ventriloquist and humorist, is also in demand. Burns and Danvers, in comedy, pianoforte and burlesque opertina, make" quite a hit; as also does George Prince, the crazy come- dian, who is the author of all the songs he sings. Hyman and Weyman, double dancers and cross-talking comedians, are exceedingly good, and their dancing is particularly smart. The Palascope pic- tures are, as usual, up to date, the pic- ture of the Dog Detective and Avenger being very interesting.
Tivoli, Pentre'
Tivoli, Pentre' An exceptionally good entertainment is given this week, including a few of the very best items now touring. The long- expected appearance of Barton and Ashley results in complete satisfaction. Their sketch, Canal-Boat Sal, Low Bridge/' includes the smartest of jokes, the cleverest in dancing, and the best in singing. A continuous source of laughter is provided by these unrivalled brisk and breezy Americans. Almost as successful is a new and original act, The Coast- guards," presented by Drury Lane panto- j mime comedians, Drew and Alders. This pair will take a. lot of beating for smart and clever sayings, repartee, etc. In addi- j tiofi to the above really excellent turns there are the great London favourites, Tom Hghe and Ernie Myers. The former is the fortunate owner or a very | powerful voice. His second song, Can London do without me? is really mag- nificent. George Melrose is very clever as humorist and siffleur, introducing a difficult and original feat of word whistling. Other good turns are those of Lily Lonsdale, a good soprano, who scores well in Eileen Alannah," and George Benson, who proves himself a capable mimic. Miss Marion Armitage also con- tributes some songs of the comedy type; and the Tivoliscope display of pictures) concludes a- very pleasant entertainment.
Cardiff Empire.!
Cardiff Empire. Cardiff will be sure to give the famous operatic singer, Madame Alice Esty, an enthusiastic reception when she appears at the Empire next week. She will give excerpts from her operatic and ballad repertoire, and many will be delighted to hear again the wonderful voice that for three years captivated Royal Opera goers at Covent Garden. Prince of sketch comedians describes Mr. Harry Roxbury. On five thousand occasions he has played Sergeant Long- fellow in The Prince of Monte Carlo," produced by his own company, and played in every town in the United Kingdom. Mr. Roxbury has now been engaged by Mr. Oswald Stoll, and on Monday next he will stage for the first time at Cardiff Empire Sergeant Longfellow." Mr. Roxbury will appear in the title role, and included in the caste are his charming wife, Miss Vashti Wynne, and Mr. Eric Campbell, supported by a bright com- pany. Miss Lil Hawthorne; the favourite comedienne, is also due to appear next week, and the bill is further strengthened by the inclusion of the Cumberlands, famous acrobatic cyclists; Goodfellow and Gregson, high-class comedy artistes; Little Keeno, the microscopic comedian; Charburn's Stars, in a pretty vocal scena; the Lyric Quartet, in harmonised illustrated numbers; Harry Anderson, vocal comedian; and a new series of pic- tures.
Neiv Theatre, Cardiff.
Neiv Theatre, Cardiff. Miss Ada Reeve and her London com- pany are announced at the New Theatre next week. This talented little lady's work is well known in Cardiff, and when she opens at the New Theatre on Mon- day, she is sure to receive a most enthu- siastic reception. Only recently returned from a successful season in South Africa, she is now playing, to packed houses wher- ever she goes with this magnificent pro- duction, the musical play, The Butter- flies." Judging by the booking, which is already far advanced, this will also be the case here. There will be a matinee on Saturday at 2.
.Opera House, Treherbert.
Opera House, Treherbert. So successful was. "Lucky Durham" at Tonypandy last week. it is by special request staged again this week at the Opera House, where a similar fortune has attended it. Of course, no one can won- der at this, seeing it is a play in a cate- gory of its own. It deals with success, and it contains the one and only definition of success, viz., Work. In fact, every- thing and everybody connected with Lucky Durham is successful, and Mr. Wilson Barrett's influence still lives in a play of this type. It is a great pity that he was not allowed more time here below to enable him to give us more of these great novel lessons. A full report of Messrs. Armitage and Leigh's company was given in our issue of last week. Next week's attraction at the Opera House will be "Sentenced for Life."
f-fippodrome, Tonypandy.
f-fippodrome, Tonypandy. Alix Lukos, the famous protean actor, presents his latest scena, entitled The Language of History/7 The scena in- cludes life-like representations of William Ewart Gladstone, Sir Redvers Buller, General Booth, Signor Foli, etc., and each character is extremely well done. The I Custances appear in a sparkling come- dietta viz., "A Game for hitting off tl situation between a jealous wife and her husband. Empress, the clever lady of mystery, is an item of rather a mechanical turn of mind, escaping as she does from handcuffs, chains, pillory, and a strait jacket. Her performance creates no little wonderment at the way in which she releases herself from her bonds. Charlie Goodman's comical comedians earn and deserve a hearty laugh in their amusing sketch, entitled Cross Pur- poses." The pictures are this week of special interest., including the great National Pageant of Wales. This series take fully 35 minutes to exhibit, and after seeing them, one should have ~a very good idea of what the Pageant was really like.
