Fire at Thomas & Evans, Porth
Fire at Thomas & Evans, Porth A fire broke out Wednesday morning on the extensive premises of BfiSssns Thomas and Evans, provision merchants, Hannah Street, Porth, which, but for the prompt I action of the police, might have involved a. large amount of property. It appears that P.O. Harper, on his ri'nlr o! saw a hi a warehouse in x air Stieet, at the rear of the main 1 na|id at once reported to P.C.. Boniield, who took immediate steps to summon the Porth Fire Brigade. An entrance was effected to the warehouse ¡ and as no water was available close at hand in the building, buckets of water were procured from neighbouring houses, and. by this means the fire w^s hehj in check. Inspector Williams, with all the available police, worked with a will until the brigade arrived, under Capt. Edgar Thomas. The flames, which originated in the bottom of a lift,. were then licking their way upwards, and had reached a storeroom. The firemen, with a good supply cf water, after about an hour got the out- break under, but not before, some hundreds of pounds of damage had been done. A concrete floor saved the water making its way into the grocery shop. The Tonypandy Fire Brigade vas sent for by Inspector Williams, and rendajpd valuable assistance under Capt. F. Thomas. It is surmised that the fire had its origin in some, sweepings from the shops, which were left in the lift for removal by the District Council's refuse carts. The damage is covered by insurance.
