' - Rhondda's Huge Royalties.
Rhondda's Huge Royalties. £ 30,000 a Year Ground fzents. Writing in the South Wales Daily l News," a writer points out the enormous amount of royalties derived from colliery operations in the Rhondda Valley. In 1851 the area now represented by the Rhondda urban district was mostly poor pastoral or mountain land, and the popu- lation was less than one thousand. To-day there is a population of 132,000, and a ratable value of t622,000, the population having multiplied by 132 times, and the ratable value by 125 times. It is estimated that from 23,000 build- ings the .ground landlords are now getting £ 30,000 per annum in ground rents; but these buildings occupy only about 1,500 acres out of the total area of the district. In addition to their ground rente, the landlords are, of course, getting royalties on the coal extracted from the pits, and these vary from 6d. to Is. per ton, way- leaves being also charo-ed in many cases. The colliery proprietors have to pay heavy ground rent for all the surface land they use, and they have to provide also about £54,000. per annum in rate8; but the royalty and ground rent receivers escape local taxation altogether. A remarkable instance of the inequit- able burden which the royalties impose is afforded in the case of one colliery where the original landowner leased the ground to a prospector, who agreed to pay a royalty of 6d. per ton upon the coal ex- tracted. The prospector subsequently sold to another colliery proprietor, and took the opportunity of raising the royalty to 10d., himself pocketing the difference of 4d. Later on, another transfer took place, the third proprietor agreeing to pay Is. 6d. per ton royalty, whilst the second man pocketed the difference of 8d. The total royalty navable in respect of coal mined at that pit was thus Is. 6d. per ton, a sum which at that time was not far from the total amount paid the. collier for hewing it. Fortunately, the colliers of late years have been much better paid; but the fact remains that Is. 6d. per ton was the royalty levied upon coal they mined and paid over to three classes of colliery owners, who undertook none of the risk of the colliery enterprise, invested no capital in the undertaking, but were simply parasites upon others.
Pentre and Trecrchy Choir.
Pentre and Trecrchy Choir. We are asked to publish the following detailed adjudication given by Dr. McNaught on the performance of the Pentre and Treorchy United Choir (con- ductor, Mr. James Davies, G.T.S.C.) in the second choral competition at the London National Eisteddfod last month. The test pieces were (a) 0 snatch me swift" (Dr. Callcott) and (b) Yr Arglwydd yw fy Mugail (Harry Evans). The above choir were awarded 86 ma,rks in respect of the first and 60 in respect of the second, making a total of 146. Dr. McNaught's adjudication is as follows: — "PENTRE AND TREORCHY. (a) A fine blend. Trebles a sweet and well unified quality. Mood and purpose in the style. Soon began to lose pitch a little. Attack unequal. Got somewhat loose at bare 21 to 31. Larghetto a splen- did effect. Allegro Andante: Attack here excellent. Compact and clean. The slurred lines on the last page were finely vocalised, and the final largo made its proper effect. Reverent and devotional. (b) Evidently well studied as expres- sion. In fact, it was too dramatic and fervent for such a piece. Unfortunately, the intonation was sadly out. This marred fatally many well-designed points. Chords became hazy, and the tone not musical."

National Pageant of Wales. Dress Rehearsals. Next week the National Pageant of Wales will be opened to the public. Tins week the dress rehearsals are proceeding and on Thursday tens of thousands of school children will flock thither from every county in the Principality. On Saturday last the first informal dress rehearsal was held, when at least 4,000 of the performers appeared on the Page, ant field in their historic costumes. These included a strong contingent of the 500 footballers who, as wild Welsh clansmen under Ivor Bach, reacted the storming of Cardiff Castle in the 12th century, when they captured that stronghold from its mail-clad Norman garrison. The 500 dear little Welsh fairies, representing the thirteen counties, went through their c 'ha charming dances on the green sward, anu the various scenes and episodes were duly enacted. Reports from outside districts, and thu, booking of seats in the grand stands, indi- cate that the fever of excitement has now I v- spread far beyond Cardiff and if the weather is anything like reasonable, the of the affair must be stupendous. It will be borne in mind that would-be visitors had to be turned awav from the Church Pageant in London a'few weeks ago and it is likely that those who defer booking, seats for this Welsh Pageant may have to be content with standing room. Still, there ie good accommodation for nearly 30,000 guests, and there should not be too great a crush at any period. A matter that is now being mooted is whether or not lady visitors should be Miked to eschew the hats of the mode of bhe hour, and wear such mantillas or other headgear as would allow those seats behind ;hem to see what is going on in front. The nopular fancy dress balls and other sntertainraents that are to be given in Jonnection with the Pageant promise to ye the most successful and enjoyable locial functions of the kind ever held, vhile the firework displays seem to espe- cially captivate the fancies of the pros- )ective visitors from the Rhondda wii ,he coal districts.

li Presentation Meeting at Ferndale. On Saturday evening, the lOtil inst., the officials of D. Davis and Sons met at the Assembly Hall to. present Mr. Jacobs (col- liery agent) and Mrs. Jacobs (daughter of Dr. T. W. Parry, J.P., Rock House) on the occasion of their marriage. Mr. Hannah (one of the directors of Messrs. D. Davis and Sonsi) presided over the meeting, and in his opening speech said that it gave him great pleasure to see so many officials nresent to do honour to Mr. and Mrs. Jacobs. Mr. Hannah then presented Mrs. Jacobs with a diamond ring, the gift of the officials of Messrs. D. Davis and Sons, and in so doing remarked that the ring would bring happy memories of the respect and esteem in which she was held by the officials. Mr. Hannah also remarked that he thought Mr. Jacobs had been extremely fortunate in the choice of a wife (cheers). Mrs. Jacobs, in a pretty little speech, expressed her gratitude; for the beautiful present, saying that it would always bring her pleasant memories (applause). Mr. Hannah then called upon Mr. D. W. Thomas to present Mr. Jacobs with a case of cutlery. Mr. Thomas, in an appropriate speech, remarked that it was an honour and also a great pleasure to him to be chosen as the representative of the officials on this hgippy event. He assured Mr. Jacobs that the present was the outcome of a spon- taneous desire on the part of the officials, of all grades, to express their high esteem and respect for the many excellent quali- ties he possessed. Mr. Jacobs, in reply, said that when he came to the district 4t years ago, he never thought that he and the lady whom he had now the honour of calling wife would be the recipients of these presents. He wished to thank them on behalf of Airs. Jacobs and himself for the valuable pre- sents received, but more so for the kind words and wishes that accompanied them. Ever since he came to Fern dale he had received nothing but kindness and all pos- sible support from the lowest to the highest, and he wished to say that he owed a lasting debt to Mr. Hannah for his generous interest in him, always ready and willing to help him with the advice which was the outcome of his great ex- perience. Mr. D. G. Bowen presented Mr. Jacobs with a walking-stick on behalf of the Fern- dale Conservative Club. Dr. Morris (Tylorstown), Mr. Henry Richards, Mr. Rowe, and Mr. Morgan Davies also spoke. Mr. Hannah proposed the toast to the "Bride and Bridegroom," which was drank with musical honours, followed by three cheera for Mr. and Mrs. Jacobs. Dr. Parry, in a speech full of feeling,, begged to thank one and all, and Ferndale in general, for the great esteem and re- spect which they had shown him and his family on the occasion of his daughter's marriage. It was now his desire more than ever to remain at Ferndale and serve them to the best of his ability in his capa- city as a medical man. He jocularly remarked that he had lost a daughter, but had gained a son of whom he was proud, and it would be his one purpose in future to further the best interests of the bride and bridegroom (applause). The speeches were interspersed with musical items contributed by local artistes.
