Editorial Notes. The performance of that great work, Elijah," by the Mardy United Choir last Thursday and Saturday was another encouraging and stimulating incident, helping the faith of Welsh people gener- ally, that if its immense raw material is properly trained, it can do very great things in music, and especially choral achievements. For a choir, drawn al- most exclusively from the mining popu- lation of one district to attempt the per- formance of an exacting master-work by Mendslssohn speaks volumes for the genius and latent powers of the people. We have always believed in the immense potentiality of the Welsh material if properly and technically informed and led. Mardy is fortunate in having a man like Mr. Gwilym Lewis, who is musically instinctive even to the tips of his fingers. Though not in the Profession of music, it is a department he could easily distinguish himself, did he care to adopt it absolutely. The way in which the Mardj singers attacked the dramatic choruses of "Elijah" was a sensation that will not easily fade from the exper- J ience of the privileged people who heard the work. And again, there were no "cuts," as the musical critics would say. No numbers were shirked, and right to the end the sustentation of interest was remarkably fine. There was uniformity in the performance on the part of the chorus which promises a splendid history if the choir will 11 hang together for the next few years. A few performances of that kind must unfailingly lead up to a very prominent position, even on the National Eisteddfod stage. We tiust, therefore, that this choir will live to work. No spasms can conquer the future. There must be a going on, and { even in the winter of discontent and dis- couragement, there must be a sustained I note, which must be held on until thej down beat of certain success has been reached. Mardy can illustrate, from its own local resources, the many possibili- ties of Welsh choral powers. Mr. Gwilym Lewis, too, has the rare good fortune of having official co-operation in Mardy, which is often the great difficulty

Ogmore Vale. The annual meeting of the shareholders of the Electric Light Company was held at the Ogmore Valley Hotel, on Wednes- day afternoon last. The chair was occupied by Mr. John Willliams, Apsley House, Bridgend. The balance sheet for the past year was read and adopted. It snewed a dividend of 7} per cent. The two retiring directors, Dr. R, A. Williams, V £ 1u4 -iv grocer, were re-elected. Regarding the question of the Osram Lamps, it was decided to leave the question in abeyance until the end of this quarter so that their prices in other. districts might be known. Protest Meeting.—A large number of electric light consumers met at the Ogmore Valley Hotel on Wednesday even- ing to receive the report of the depute tion which had interviewed the directors of the Electric Light Company respect- i Pnces of electric current. They stated that the Company had decided to leave the matter in abeyance, until the prices for burning Oisrams, in other dis- tijietsi,. were 'ascertained. The meeting decided to leave the matter alone until there was a cause for a further meeting. Ballot.—The result of the ballot for the doctor at the Abel- Colliery is as fol- lows: Dr. Anderson polled 549 votes. The five others 45.among them. Dr Anderson was therefore appointed to act as medi- cal man for the Aber workmen. The situation at the Aber Colliery re- mains unchanged. The men allege that they have been victimised, for those who had notices include all the men who recently prosecuted the company. The men had decided that none of those who were left at work were to work in the places of the men who had served their t notice. As a result SAveral mem liotra dropped tools because they would not « work double roads." At a meeting of Aber men last week, Stewart Gray, the leader of the Hunger Marchers, urged the men who were now idle to march to Cardiff and make a demonstration at the offices of Messrs. Cory Brothers. TT.C^ntftta<.—At the Workmen's Hall on Wednesday night last, the choir of the Primitive Methodist Chapel performed the sacred cantata, "The Wise King." The choir1 was conducted by Mr. F. King, i and was assisted by the following local artistes:—"David," Mr. John Lewie* "Solomon," Mr. G. Kinsey; "Nathan, Mr. I. Williams; Bathsheba," Miss L. Kinsey. Others who took part were Miss M. Jones, Miss F. Baker, and the Misses G. and C. Price. The choir and i artistes gave a, fine rendering of the can- tata, and great credit is due to Mr. King for the great efforts' he made for the suc- cess of the cantata. Mr. W. H. Capel presided at the piano in his usual capable manner. Obituary.- We regret to chronicle the death of Mr. John Kynan, Bridge St., Ogmore Vale, who passed away early on Monday morning. Deceased had been ill f for about a week, suffering from pneu- monia, which terminated fatally. Mr. Kynan, who was 55 years of age, leaves a grown-up family, to whom we tender our sincere sympathy in their sad } bereavement. »

that militates against success in many places. There the singers and public men are of one mind. Mr. Maltby, the general manager, has entered into the movement with the spirit and devotion of real Cymric patriot for the good name of the district. He is right. The social and recreative lives of the people, whose labour direction has been entrusted to him, demand that he should work to elevate and exhilarate and by identify- ing himself, as it were, with parental heartiness, and sympathy with the public life of the people he minds the respon- sibilities of his position, in a manner that cannot fail to spread the best in- fluence of his position on the district in all its aspirations. We should like to see more of this altruism in the official circles of the (Rhondda. It will not deter dividends, but will more probably in- crease the energy and willingness to make them. Contentment is the best and most effective essential of all work. Common sense, the force of reason, and the modern spirit of conciliation, has once more prevailed in the coal trade. The only ray of hope last week was the optimism of the more responsible leaders.- Mabon, as Mr. Brace says, was a monument of patience." Such in fact was the dis- position shown by Mabon on Monday. There were canons to right, left and front of him, still the" grand old man of the Welsh industrial armies main- tained an equable temperament. With the young bloods there is always the temptation to r.ush events, and to hold the fiery spirits in control is no small achievement. The grandest quality in generalship always is to keep the reins well in hand, so that when the critical moment arrives the "Iron Duke's" opportune command in the closing stages of Waterloo of Up Guards and at them," can be given. It is this way in every strife. There is a time to hit, and a time to wait, watchful, vigilant and alert, before striking out. Patience, as as Mr. Brace says is of incalculable value for work in the industrial move- ment, and one must have age and experience to develop this virtue. We are glad to find that the right temper held sway on Monday, and was con- firmed on Wednesday. The decision to wait for Wednesday's meeting of the owners has been proved a wise and judicious one. Unfortunately in these in- dustrial wars the ambulance of charity and benevolence has to be utilised almost on the start. War. such as con- templated by some on Monday meant a long preparation. Mr. Hartshorn at Maesteg, gave very direct advice to the men to take a long view of the situation, and to economise now while it is yet day. It is an excellent exhortation. If the endurance of the Worker universally equalled that of the sober and industrious man, the issue of a strike would not have such terrible domestic catastrophes in its train. The lot of the industrial leaders, particularly when momentous decisions are pending, is not a pleasant one. The unity of the men, and loyalty to leader, is an indisputable essential. Leadership in the Trades Union is too often not duly appreciated. The acti ve anderstudies are too impatient and eager to demonstrate their powers. It unfor- tunately, too often we are afraid, reveals personal ambition, and not the genuine welfare of tne whole. There is too much back-biting of existing leaderships by the "would-be" section. If modern civilised methods mean anything, they mean that conciliation and negotiation by intellectual skill mast prevail as the governing factor in settlement of dis- putes.
