Pentre. 1 One of the merry parties assembled at tae Central Hotel, Pentre, oil Thursday night, where a social was held under the auspices of the Pentre Young People's Social Society. Justice was done to the good things provided by Host Collier, after which a splendid programme was g,or,e, through, interspersed with amusing games. The chairman for the evening V.Vs Mr. O. Hooper, Ton. Musical items were rendered by several well-known local artistes, and impromptu dialogues, to- gether with character sketches, were thoroughly appreciated. Messrs. T. Rich- ards .and R. Griffiths mystified the party with a smart turn of card manipulations and clever illusions. The Good Templars of Ystrad and the immediate district spent the waning hours of 1908 in jollification, a social social evening being held under the management of the Temple of Love "I Lodge. A goodly number were present, and a pleasant evening was spent in games and a varied programme. An excellent paper, entitled Is Social- ism antagonistic to Christianity? was read at the Wesleyan Chapel on Wednes- day night, December 30th. The reader was Mr. Henry Hale, Ton, who delighted all present- with his interesting and well- written views upon this subject. The usual votes of thanks were heartily car- ried, A splendid New Year's treat was given at the Salvation Army Hall on Saturday and Monday last, when a gigantic cine- matograph entertainment was presented on both dates. Over three thousand feet of beautiful pictures were shown, which were interesting and amusing. The evening enjoyments were intended for the adult section, whilst the afternoon shows were especially intended for children, and the crowds which besieged the Hall spoke of the popularity which these meetings hare acquired. Each child was also pre- sented with ai packet of sweets upon leaving the Barracks. The local branch of the British Women's Temperance Association, although not often heard of publicly, are doing grand work by stealth. Several cottage prayer meetings have been held lately, whilst a transformed public-house at Treherbert is the venue of a weekly social evening, and ranch good is being accomplished. --+-- A well-attended meeting of shop assis- tants was held at the Popxilar Hotel, Pentre 011 Monday night. Mr. I. T. Rees, Ton, presided, whilst the speaker for the evening was Mr. P. C. Hoffman, organiser of the Amalgamated Shop Assis- tants' Union for South Wales. The Chair- man, in his introductory remarks, waxed eloquently upon the virtues of unity so greatly lacking amongst the assistants of tiie local district. Mr. Hoffman ablyx dealt with the Early Closing movement, and expounded the cause of the Association admirably. Strong comments upon the hving-in system were uttered, and the general life of the white slaves behind the counter was vividly described. Ques- tions were asked and satisfactorily answered, after which the usual votes of thanks were deservedly accorded. It is intended to revive the hitherto stagnant branch of this Union at Pentre, and at a. members' meeting held on Tuesday evening, a goodly number joined as the result of Mr. Hoffman's endeavours. A well-arranged social tea was held at Siloh, Pentre, on New Year's Eve, under the auspices of the Young People's Society connected with that church. Over two hundred people sat down to daintily laid tables, and were waited upon by Mrs. Tiller, Mrs. Ben Evans, the Misses Cassie Davies, S. Davies, L. Williams, and Ada Rees, whilst the bachelors' tables were presided over by Messrs. D. J. Davies, G Howells, U. Davies, D. Morgans, E. Davies, and J. Owens. The catering arrangements were admirably carried out by Mr. S. Davies, Household Stores, Pentre, whilst. the untiring efforts of Miss Lizzie Davies, the secretary of the Society, resulted in the party being a pronounced success. During the evening, those present were entertained to well- rendered recitations by Miss L. Thomas and the Misses Davies; solos, duets, &c., were rendered by several well-known artistes, who were ablv accompanied by Mr. Tom Evans. The funeral of the late Dr. Probert was attended by several local gentlemen. Siloh Chapel, the scene of the lamented I divine's noble work at Pentre, was well represented, whilst an old associate of the deceased minister, in the person of the Rev. J. W. Thomas, Ton, assisted at the graveside. An impressive memorial service was held at Siloh Chapel, Pentre, on Sunday evening. The Rev. J. J. Williams (pastor) officiated, and delivered a pathetic dis- course upon the virtuous life of the late Dr. Probert, whilst the choir rendered a touching anthem, which befitted the occa- sion. Alderman E. H. Davies, J.P., and Mr. Millward also spoke in endearing terms of the departed minister's stay at Pentre. A beautiful feature of the solemn service was the singing of Mr. Ben Evans of a specially written poem composed by the Rev. J. J. Williams, which touched the hearts of the crowded congregation in a visible manner. The quarterly session of the North-East Glamorgan District Lodge of Good Tem- plars was held at the English Congre- gational Church, Ton-Pentre, on Monday afternoon under the auspices of the Star of the Valley Lodge, I.O.G.T., Pentre. All lodges were well represented, and a good attendance of members was recorded. Bro. Hocking, G.S.J.W., Maesteg, occu- pied the chair, and delivered a few well- chosen remarks. The District Chief Templar—Bro. Hickei-ton-gave a splen- did report of the good work done by the Order, whilst the District Secretary cheered those present by reporting a sub- stantial increase of members during the quarter. Encouraging words were spoken by the District Electoral Superintendent, which signified that the electorate of the Order had been considerably augmented: and the officer in charge of the juvenile branch gave a. similar report. The pre- sent state of the Order looks indeed rosy and speaks well for the temperance cam- paign during the coming year.

Blaenycwm. Under the auspices of the Blaenycwm Orchestral Band, a social tea was held at the Dunraven Girls' School on New Year's Eve. The social was in every way an unqualified success. Dancing: was in- dulged in by many, and those who could not participate in the joys of the terpsichorean art, were entertained with games. The object of the social was to augment the funds of the band, and to provide an opportunity for presenting, Mr. Davies, A.C., the conductor, with a gold- mounted baton.
