THE DIRECTOR'S DILEMMA AND…
THE DIRECTOR'S DILEMMA AND THE WAY OUT. I FROM what has appeared in our columns it is evident that there is a division of opinion as to whether the Ynysboeth Mixed Schools should be enlarged or a new school built. The Director of Education appears to be in a dilemma as to which is the better policy, to extend the old or to erect a new school. ''Lucifer "is in favour of enlargement; but -6 Pater in this week's issue goes strong for a new school. Assuming that things are as this correspondent states—and we have no reason to think that they are not-we are inclined to believe that it would be false economy on the part of the Education Authority to merely enlarge the present building. Public authorities have perforce to take thought for the morrow. In erecting schools, for instance, the possibilities and probabilities of the future should be consid- ered. Mattbewstown is undoubtedly a growing district. Industrial development I will very soon necessitate more housing accommodation there, and consequently more school accommodation. We do not think that the few unten- anted. houses in Pentwyn Avenue are to be taken as an indi- cation that the supply of dwellings in the district is more than the demand. The reason for the vacant houses must be sought in another direction. As Pater points out recurring extensions are costly, and, we may add, inconveni- ent. We venture to think that the ratepayers of Mountain Ash and district would best serve their own interests -and the welfare of the children of this particular neighbourhood by rejecting the penny-wise-pound-foolish policy of enlarging the existing school, and decid- ing to erect a new building in a con- venient place.

The Rev Grawys Jones spoke a few words on behalf of the Rechabites. He II invited voung people to enroll as mem- bers, and enjoined upon the children to I join the Trecynon tents, Mr John Eilis Davies proposed thanks to al! who had taken part. MR. HURT AND THE ABERDARE…
MR. HURT AND THE ABERDARE DISTRICT COUNCIL. Dear Sir,—I was astonished to read in your valuable paper last week an open letter to the Aberdare District Council, in which the writer attacked that noble body for the untidy state of the park ponds. I do not undertake to reply on behalf of the Council, but say just a few words to Mr. Hurt. He refers to the imitation seaside which looks like a lot of wet clay, but if he took pains to enquire of any of the children sporting themselves there if they were suited, he would get direct ad- vice from them, and learn that "our seaside n is a boon and a blessing to the children as well as being a dry comfort- able place on which to leave any child. I would like to know how can one expect to learn what is in Davy Jones* locker by looking into a fresh water lake? I do not profess to see eye to eye with the Council, but I will always hold that our park compares favourably with any other park of its size in the country. I beg, sir, to close in the orthodox man- ner by quoting a phrase irrespective of its meaning in connection with the re- mainder of the letter, and say "Wait and isee.Yours, etc., ANOTHER TRADESMAN.
THE LAND TAX AT PENRHIWCEIBER,
THE LAND TAX AT PENRHIW- CEIBER, Sir, —Why are the children of Pen- rhiwceiber allowed to suffer more than the children of the other parts of the Mountain Ash Council area? If some members of the Mountain Ash Council will have their way, we are to have a two story school building at Penrhiw. ceiber. Even now when the buildings are on the ground floors, the little ones of the infants' school have to climb three flights of stairs to come to their school from their playgrounds-if we may call them playgrounds, too. They are not only a disgrace to the place, but a danger to the little ones who have to play there, filled as these places are with ruts, trenches, and big stones. But now it seems that the little ones are to have another long flight of steps, if we are to have a two-story building owing to the dispute over the land, tax. To Penrhiwceiber parents which is the more important, evading the and tax, or having a decent school and play- ground for our little ones. It was only a few weeks ago, luckily it was on a Saturday, that a horse bolted past the door of the infants' school, just when we were coming from work. If it had happened on a schoolday, I tremble to think of the result, as the door of the school opens on to the road where the little ones often form in a row before marching in. As we have to pay our share of the rates at Ceiber, surely our children deserve the same consideration as the children in other parts.—Yours. PARENT.
