--'"- - Clericalism and Education,
Clericalism and Education, To the Editor of the Carmarthen Weekly Reporter SIR,-Wily is the percentage of illiterates in Protestant countries low ? Because Protestantism fosters a spirit of inquiry. Popery has so much to conceal that it is forced to keep the people in ignorance A few undeniable facts will bring this out dearly in the" Edinburgh Heview' for October JS74, appeared an article 011 the census of France in 1872. It will be noticed that I go back a few years. No one will dream of asserting that there is collusion between the reviewer and myself. What does he say ? Nearly one-third of the population of France are totally destitute of education— that is they can neither read nor write. But this statement is in truth too favourable, for it is based on general average of instruction throughout the country. In the eastern departments which about Germany and Switzerland the rite of I tist i-uction is credit- ably high thus in Franche-Comte (Doubs) only 57 per cent of the population are uneducated in French Lorraine (Meurthe) 8, in the Jura, 9, in Yos-ges 10, in the capital (Seine) 11. But as we recede from the German frontier into central and western France the amount of ignorance becomes amazing. Even in Berry (Cher) it' is 57 per cent in the highly democratic department of Allier 52 per cent in Catholic Brittany (Vendee, Morbihan, and Finisterre), from (50 to 56 per cent on the frontier of Spain (Ariege), 53 per cent and in Limousin (Hante Yinne), 61'8 per cent.. A black picture, truly. It is the effectof some cause. What i the cause.? Figures supplied by the "Edinburgh," throw some l'ght on the subject. It is curious to contrast with this amount of dense ignorance the very large numbers of the clerical population of France. SEe has no less than 52,148 of the secular clergy, 13,102 brethren or monks of the regular orders, and 84,300 sisters and nuns, in all nearly 150,000 persons who have taken holy orders or vows. We cannot congratulate the Church militant on the warfare against ignorance and superstition.' Look at Ireland. Are the people as highly educated as they should lie ? Mr M J F McCarthy a lloman Catholic barrister, a few months ago wrote a book entitled Five years in Ireland," in which lie proved that something was radically wrong in the Emerald Isle. Mr McCrrthy is the author of another exposure, recently published. What the accused (the Irish priesthood) will ay in answer to the charges of their cultured co-religionists I cannot even imagine. That delightful writer, Miss Francis Power Col be, is the author of a book called Italics." She lived for three successive winters in an Irish village where she opened night schools, in which arithmetic, geography, itc., were taught. Says Miss Cobbe Each year it also happenod that as soon as my schools were opened the priest of the village (profes- sing profound respect and gratitude to me and my family) proceed to open other night schools of his own, and to order all my Catholic pupils to transfer their attendance to the same. When I had acquiesced in this arrangement, contended that education should be given, no matter by whom or where and consequently closed my own school, it also happened (of course quite foruitously, but still, singularly regularly for three con- secutive years) that the priest next week dosed his schools also." That is the policy of the Church of Home. She occasionally reforms herself, but not until strong Protes- tant pressure is brought to bear upon her. It is because clericalism is not be trusted that Englishmen are alarmed at the Cecil- Yaughan Convocation coalition. Lc déricalisme \oila C'ennemi,' is as true to-day as of old. Yours, etc.. A. LE LIEVRE. Official Pre-ss Correspondent, Protectant Press Agency, Wanstead Park road, Ilford, Essex, October 11th, 1902.
New Year's Jiiitertaiument…
New Year's Jiiitertaiument for the Poor (Children of London. AN A PPEAL. Jo the fdill r (If the Catmirthrn. \Vcd<hj Rcpoiter. SIR, —Will you once again permit me to bring to the notice of your readers the fund which it is my privilege annually to miso for a two-fold object—that of providing a New Year's entertainment to about 1,200 poor children of the Bagged School Union in the Guildhall of the City of London-and the accompanying distribution of Christmas hampers to 4,000 or 5,000 little cripples? His Majesty the King has for several years contributed to the list of sllbscrptioQs and this year I am ag-,i:n honoured by His Majesty's support. General Dighton Probyn, Keeper cf His Majesty's Privy Purse, writes me 1 am commanded by the King to send you the enclosed cheque f'.r flO 10s., as a a.)nati ¡TI from His Majesty to the Poor Children &nd Cripples' Christmas and New Year's Enter- tainment Fund, which you so kindly organise on their behalf." The Court of Common Council: ave, as in previous years, accorded the use of the Guildhall, and many members of the Court warmly aud actively assist iiie but as the poor and suffering children of the Metro- polis as a whole are participants, I confidently extend my appeal to London at large. No one who has witoessed the reception by a home-tied cripple of a hamper at Christmas, cau over-estimate the go d done by the timely gift, and the Guildhall Banquet is a source of never failing pleasure. Mr W H Pannell, C.C., Chartered Accountant and honorary auditor, has aigned the balance sheet, which shows that t5 last year £ 1,641 8s 6d was collected, and the list of donors indicates that tho movement has lust none of its popularity. Contributions, large or sm--ill, to the H Children's Fund "should be addressed to me at G9; Ludgate Hill, E.C. I am, Sir, y onr trtl:y, W. P. T.,EL(M, Aid rman. October 22nd, 1902.
