Local Deaths.
Local Deaths. The obituary column of the "Times" for the 9th inst. contains the fallowing notices I SIR NDWARD BERKELEY MANSEL die.d yesterday at his residence, O-ld Gattor- had, Norwich. He had been ill for some T time, and his death was not unexpected. Sir Edward Berkeley Mausel was born itn 1839, the eldest son of the late Major Courtenay Mansel (nee Philipps), and suc- ceded to the Baronetcy de jure in 1883. He assumed the title in 1903, but it was not until the year 1906 that bis right Was definitely established by a decision of the Court of Session that his parents were validly married in Scotland in 1838, and that he was their eldest lawful son. The recent history of this baronetcy will be re- membered. In 1838 the parents of the late baronet entered into an irregular marriage in Scottish form, iand after living together they were married in, 1847 with religious rites. Sir Edward was the eldest son under the former stage, but a cliarge of illegiti- macy was advanced against him, and a son born under the later stage took the title at the death, without unale issue, of Sir John Bell William Mansel, the ninth baronet, in 1883. This 10th baronet was in turn suc- ceeded in 1892 by his son, Courtenay Cecil Mansel 'as 11th baronet, but he abandoned the title when made aware of the claims of his uncle, the baronet who is now dead. The Court of Session, in confirming the title, pointed out that Scottish law recognized as lawful an irregular marriage with (subse- quent cohabitation. Sir Edward, who waa formerly in the loth Hussars and the 6th Dnagoansi, in 1883 succeeded the late Colonel Boileau in the command of the 1st Volunteer Ba/ttailion Norfolk Regiment, and he hefld that post until lh,Jl. He was a justice of the peace for Norfolk and Suffolk. Sir Edward, who married in 1870 Julia Yertue daughter of the late Rev Henry E. Ixwnbe' is succeeded by Iris nephew, Courtenay Cecil. who thus resumes the title.
