DEATH OF MR GEORGE GISSING. The death is announced of Mr. George Gissing, the well-known novelist, which took place on Monday afternoon at St. Jeau-de-Luz, near Biarritz. There had been nr) previous announcement that he was fouL of health, and the news will therefore I come with a painful shock of surprise to the many admirers and readers of his book- Mr. Gissing, who was in his fovly seventh year, was the author of about. a score of newels, begin- ning with" The Uuclassed," which lie published in 1824. This was followed in rapid succession by "Demos," "Isabel Clarendon," "Thyr^a," "A Life's Meruing," "The Nether Wor!d," "New Urub Street," "Bern in ExiJr," and others-not a year passing without a novel from his pen. His power was early recognised and acknowledged by the critics, and by all judges of good literature, and his circle of readers grew steadily. Yet, through- out his career, Mr. Gissing seems persistently to have just failed to secure the fame and popu- larity which the excellence cf his work merited. He belonged to that class of writers which we call depressing. He depicted not the joy but the struggle of life. There was no atmosphere of blitheness or Hght-heartedncss in his novels: all j was gloom and poverty, and a hard fight for exist- ence. The names of manv of his books suggest their gloomy contents, for example, ''The" Uu- classed," "The Nether World," "New Grub Street," "The Whirlpool," "Human Odds and Ends." It was not so much that the author was a confirmed pessimist as that he deliberately chose to analyse most mercilessly the desoewt.e struggle for exist- ence among the poor. Mr. Gissing possessed the faculty cf enclwming his reader's attention, not by the crude devices of sensationalism, but by sheer power of simple and direct description.
