JOHN IDWAL, Little son of Mr and Mrs Thomas, Bride street, Corwen, who died September 22nd, 1898, 10 wr months old. Brief was thy stay, bright gem of hope, Thy parents' light and joy; A world of love was born with thee, My cherub baby boy; Thine eyes just known thy mother's face, She felt so fondly blest, With thy sweet lips, two soft spring buds, Unfolding on her breast. Dear cherished one, soon would he come To fill a brother's part; Kind parents, he adorned your home, His presence filled your hearts; But death's cold hand has changed the scene, The loving beauty's gone; A tomb hath sprung amid your joys For you to weep upon. Ohl saddened is your homestead now, You see the vacant place, And miss your darling's joyous tones, His fair and pleasant face; You miss his hand in fond embrace, The sunny smile is gone; His love-warm heart is cold and stall, That nestled to your own. Spring's early flowers shall deck his grave, Memorials of his worth, His purity, his tenderness, His gentle flight from earth; Oh! sinless child, would that with thee We too might soar above, To yonder fair cerulean home, Of happiness and love. ._---A Bosk for Ladies. -
A Bosk for Ladies. The information eontained in this book ought to be known by every married woman, and it will not harm the unmarried to read. The book n conveniently divided into twelve chapters. The first chapter treats on womanhood. The second chapter treats of marriage from a doctor's standpoint; points out the best age for marriage, and furnishes useful information that one can ordinarily get only from an lntelli- gent doctor. The third chapter treats of the marriage of blood relations; and condemns such > marriages as a rule. Certain people believe that women should bring forth in pain and trouble, but the hygienic physician says that oonfineroentf? can be made comparatively easy if certain rl-ilc-, are obeyed; these rules are given. The tenth chapter tells how to treat the mother till she is up and about again. The book is ful of useful information, and no book is written which goes so thoroughly into such matters. Some may think too much is told; sioh can scarecely be the case, for knowledge is power and the means of attaining happiness. Tlui book can he had in envelope from Dr T. It. Colofn y Cyniry. [DAN OLYQIAKTH T. D. ls&,&c. EISTEDDFOD GENEDLAETHOL CAERDYDD. Y chydig iawn o ddim talentog a darllenad- wy ellir ddweyd am Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Caerdydd. Yr oedd yn dda mai yn nhref Caerdydd y cynhaliwyd hi, a bod y "South Wales Daily News" a'r "Western Mail" yn cael eu cyhoeddi yn y dref hono, ac fod y ddau bapyr effro hyny wedi gwneyd llawer iawn dros yr eisteddfod cyn ei chynaliad, yn adeg ei chynal. iad, ac wedi hyny,—oni buasai am hyn, medd- af, ni buasai fawr iawn o son am dani: Eis- teddfod Genedlaethol ddigon cyffredin oedd hi. Pe buasai Hwfa a'r frawdoliaeth farddol yn eu gynau tri lliw; a'r dawnswyr talentog o'r Ucheldir yn eu gwisgoedd amryliw; a'r cyfeill- ion Uygadlon o Ffrainc; a'r cwmni selog, de- allus o'r Werddon,—pe buasai y cyfryw rai heb tod yno, ni buasai neb yno. Y mae hi yn eithaf peth ymfllamychu am dipyn o ddawnsio athrylithgar, ar ran rhai hoff o siarad a ohanu, A chami a siarad; ond beth am y rhai sydd yn cael eu trethu a gormod o ganu, ac ereill sydd yn cael eu beichio a gormod o siarad,—y mae y ddau ddosbarth hyn yn talu am ddyfod i'r eis teddfod, ac un yn cwyno fod gormod o ganu, a'r llall yn cintudiu fod gormod o siarad,— wel, yr oedd hi yn eithaf peth fod i'r ddau ddosbarth lluosog, os nad talentog, yna gael rhywbetk arall am dro; ac nid oedd hawl gyf- iawn gan neb o fewn y babell warafun hyn iddynt. Nid oedd iachach, a sioneacli,, a chryf- ach bechgyn yn y Babell na'r brodyr o'r Uuchel- dir; ac yr oedd hi yn iechyd a difyrweh. eu gweled yn taflu y pianos, a'r harmoniums, a'r gadair wag, oddiar y ffordd, i gael clirio'r JIwy- fan am ychydig o amrywiaeth. Cawsom gwm- ni rhai'n yn yr Orsedd bob boreu, tra'r oedd eisteddfodwyr selog ein gwlad ni yn cysgu ec yn colli gogoniant yr wythnos a'r wyl. Yr oedd Gorsedd Caerdydd yn werth i'w gweled ac yn werth i'w gwrando; ond nid oedd tyrfa- oedd lluosog yn edrychwyr chweith. Yn wir, y mae cylch yr Orsedd yn y Pare yn un i'w ed- mygu ac yn werth. i'w weled. Meini mawrion, hirion, ar eu penau, yn golofnau golygus, yn gwvlio'r cylch. Yr unig fai ddiwrnodau yr wyl oedd, fod y dynion yn cael eu cadw yn rhy bell allan, yn lie eu p-ollwng i fewn i'r cyn- tedd nesaf at y cylch cysegredig pe buasent yno buasai yn hawddach o'r haner siarad a hwynt, a buasai yn hawddoch canu iddynt. Y mae'n debyg mai teimlad da Pwyllgor yr Or- sedd oedd wedi trefnu hyn; ond yr oedd yn gamsyniad o dan yr amgylchiadau. Pe buasai y dorf welsom mewn ambell Orsedd yno, buas- ai pobpeth yn iawn; ond gan mai o'r goIwg,dan gysgod coed y Pare, y gwnaed"hyn, ac nad oedd y Iluoedd yn gwybod am dani, jrwell fuasai cael y bobl yn nes i'r cylch nesaf i mewn. Gwnaeth Hwfa Mon ei waith yn ardderchog iawn; yr oedd trefn ao urddas ar y cyfan i gyd. Gellid, gydag ychydig bach o ragofal a rhagdrefnu, wneyd gwasanaeth yr Orsedd yn model,—y mae yn dda, yr oedd yn ddø. eleni, yn tynu at yr hyn ddylai fod a'r hyn allai fod. Yr oedd yr areithiau yn dda nodedig, a'r an- erchiadau barddol yn gymhedrol o ran rhif a hyd, ac yn lied agos i'r pwynt. Cafwyd tipyn o helbul gyda chleddyf newydd. Herkomer yno —yr oedd yn rhy hir, ac yr oedd yntau yn gofyn ei aaai mewn noraa oerygius x neddweh yr Orsedd. Gwell genym ni vr. hen ffoidd Gy- mreig o weinio'r cledd. Yr \inig un oedd yn gallu gwneud rhywbeth yn effeithiol i roi y cleda i sefyll ar ei ben oedd Cochfarf; ac yr oedd y gorchwyl bron yn ormod i'r Ynad Heddwch caredig. Ar ol gorphen a'r Orsedd,—rhaid i ni ddweyd y gwir yn ddi gel,-nid oedd Ilawer iawn yn ngweddill o eisteddfod. yn Nghaerdydd. Yr oeua yno babell arddechog, pabell gyfleus, pa- bell rad, pabell haf,—hen babell Rosebery w«di estyn ei chortynau; ond pa un ai hen ai ne- wydd, ai pobun o'r ddau, oedd hi, yr oedd yn babell nad hawdd cael ei cwell. Nid ydym yn cofio erioed well lie swllt, a He dau swllt mwy manteisiol; a thebyg i hyn brofi yn golled ar- ianol i'r pwyllgor. Un garw am le da a lie rhad yw yr eisteddfodwr,—y lie uchaf am v geimog isaf bob amser, os gall. Nid oedd y dyrfa yn Iluosog o gwbl yno; yr oedd hi yn weddol y dydd cyntaf a'r dydd olaf, dydd y Brif Gystadleuaeth a dydd y Corau Meibion; y dyddiau ereill yr oedd yn ddigon amlwg fod y bai "rhy deneu" arni: yr oedd yn well gan wyr mawr Caerydd a1r cyleboedd am y cyngherdd nag am yr eisteddfod; yr oedd rhai o'r cyngherddau wedi tynu torfeydd llu- ososr yn nghyd, yr hyn wnaeth gryn dipyn dros y drysorfa. Nid oedd haner cymaint o frwdfrydedd gyda'r canu yno ag a glywsom mewn llawer lie. Nid oedd y corau mawr yno, ac nid oedd llawer o son am y canu; a siarad yn gerddorol, y cy- weirnod lleiaf oedd cyweirnod vr wyl. Nid ydym yn credu fod y beirniaid Seisnig eleni eto wedi rhoi rhyw lawer o foddlonrwydd i'r dorf Jiac i'r canwyr. Mor bell ag y gallem ni 9 farnu, bod yn ffraeth ac yn flippant oedd ym- gais rhai a sryrchwyd yno o bell, ac a delid yn dda, ac y disgwylid llawer wrthynt. Wn i a yw ymddygiad fel hvn o eiddo ein pwyllgorau, o flwyddyn i flwyddyn, yn tueddu i wella'n canu a. pherffeithio ein Histeddfod Genedl- aefchol ni ? Nid ydym yn credu i ganu corawl na beimiadaeth gerddorol Eisteddfod Caerdydd chwanegu un cufydd at ei maintioli, yn ol tyb llawer o ddynion profiadol, eleni. Os yw y canu yn myn'd i lawr, ni allwn blygu yr hen babell aruthrol i fyny; ac feallai y gall hyny hrofi'n- fendfth hefyd.—O'r "IG-eninen" am Hydref.
A TREORKY BUTCHER AND HIS…
A TREORKY BUTCHER AND HIS MOTHER-IN-LA\v. RECOVERING THE POSSESSION OF HER SHOP. At the Ystrad Police Court last Monday, a widow named Elizabeth Morgan, grocer and draper, Treorky, summoned her son-in-law A. D. Arthur, butcher, Treorky, for the re- covery of the possession of the shop in which he now lived and carried on trade as a butcher. Tt will be remembered that last week at the same court defendant's wife summoned him for persistent cruelty and the Bench erant^ a separation order, defendant to pay 10s a week towards the maintenance of his wife and child- ren. Mr James Spickett now appeared for applicant and Mr James Phillips conducted defendant's case. Mrs Morgan said she owned the shop, and had let it to defendant 11 years ago, before he was married to her daughter, at a monthly ren- tal of 30s, defendant to Day rates and taxes. Her son collected the rent Mr Phillips endeavoured to prove that the I tena.ncy was a yearly one. In the cross-exami- nation Mrs Morgan said no one was present when the arrangement as to tenancy was made between her and defendant. At we time she did not know he was going: to marrv her daugh- ter. Defendant had put up a new grate at the house valued at £ 7 10s, and also a partition in the passage at his own expense. She had dis- trained for 9 months' rent last September and was paid. Benjamin Morgan, the last witness's aon said he collected' the rent. Sometimes it was paid bv counter account, i.e., his mother had meat from defendant, and he in return had groceries and drapery. Before defendant mar- ried his sister defendant always paid the 30s monthly in hard cash. The Stipendiary found that witness was not the authorised agent for his mother, because she had not signed to that effect. The case was adjourned for a fortnight to enable her to sign, and upon the understand- ing that defendant would have to turn out in three wteks from that date.

Conference of Assistant Teachers.
Conference of Assistant Teachers. PRESENTATION TO THE EX-PRESI- DENT. The annual conference of the National Fed. sration of Assistant Teachers was held in the Vestry Hall, Merthyr, on Saturday. The pre- sident of the Federation was Mr Shadrach Hicks. London, but in his absence the chair was taken at the outset by Mr Allen Croft, Nottingham, the hon. treasurer. Subsequent- ly the new president, Mr J. E. Holden, Roch- dale, was installed. Among the leading officers of the Federation also present were: Mr J. T. Boulter, Leicester, hon. secretary; Miss L. Lane, London: Mr W. J. Gilham, London; Mr E. Williams, Dowlais, members of the Federal Committee. The federal arrangements locally were carried out by the Merthyr, Dow- lais, and District Assistant Teachers' Associa- tion, who entertained the delegates at a con- versazione at the "Drill Hall on Friday night and at dinner on Saturday night in the same building. Mr E. Holden, the new president, in his I address, said that elementary education was the only sound and sure foundation of the best interests of the country. Dealing with the lack of interest taken by the parents in quali- fying their children for the teaching profession, be said that out of 137,315 boys leaving school only 1,100 became teachers, or only eight out of every 1,000. A cordial reception was accorded Mr B. G. Dickson, M.A., ex-president of the Scottish Assistant Teachers' Association, who considered that the objects of their associations were the development of national education in its truest and highest sense, and the improvement and elevation of their profession. I Applause). The committee, in their sixth annual report, testified to continued progress in the pros- pects and remuneration of the class "tochers The number of associations was now 72, an in- crease of nine associations since the very suc- cessful conference at Leicester. The affiliated members of the association (including nine un- attached members) was 5,996. Amongst the newly affiliated associations were Bedwellty and Newport (Mon.), The committee had met at Coventry, Cambridge, and London. The average salaries of class teachers had in^casnd for men, from jE99 3s 5d in 1897 to JE105 2s 3d in 1898; and for women from jE73 5s 9d in 1897 to C74 16s 9d in 1898. During the year the School Boards for West Ham, East Ham, Hali- fax, Rochdale, and Oldham had empowered their class teachers to use corporal punishment. The London County Council had also granted similar powers to class teachers in its industrial schools. The President, on behalf of the Federation, presented a massive gold chain to the late ex. president Mr A. A. Thomas, B.A., who strong- ly deprecated the treatment received by the assistant teachers in Merthyr. Miss Lane (London) moved a resolution re- affirming a "standard rate of wages" and advo- cating the improvement of assistant mistresses' salaries. She dwelt -particularly upon the smallness of the Merthyr salaries," which were zE30 lower than the Union scale. She believed the Merthyr Board was experiencing some diffi- culty in getting teachers. Mr Jenkins (Swansea) seconded the motion. He attributed the fact of Wales being a bad third to the inadequate salaries paid to the assistants. Wales, with ull its educational zeal, was systematically sweating its teachers. He acknowledged, however some local excep- tions, such as Barry.—Mr Staniforth (Cardiff) and Mr AlJen- Croft continued the discussion and the motion was carried with only one dis- sentient. Addresses of welcome to the Federation were given by the High Constable (Mr Joseph Owen) Mr Arthur Daniel (District Council). Mr Syd- ney Simons (Chamber of Trade), Mr W. L. Daniel (chairman of the School Board, who in- cidentally deprecated the employment of cor- poral punishment), Mr David Evans (Board of Guardians), Rev Daniel Lewis (rector, who de- fended corporal punishment), and Mr W. Ed- wards, H.M.I. S., who regarded the conference as a very momentous occasion in the history of Merthyr. Addresses IOf congratulation also were delivered by Mr Marshall Jackman, Mr Tom John, and Mr E. Williams, on behalf of the National Union of Teachers. It was agreed to present Mr Gilham and Mr Dicks with an honorarium in recognition of services rendered. Mr Allen Croft move: "That this conference while anxious to see the infliction of corporal punshment reduced to a minimum, is neverthe- less of opinion that the present prohibitive re- gulations, by fostering a spirit of defiance, tend to increase the amount of corporal punishment inflicted, and thus defeat the end they have in view; and, being under many circumstanc OJ utterly unworkable, place assistants in a false and degrading position. That the ndtpticn of a system by which all certificated assistants should have power to administer corporal pun- ishment would remove to a great extent the terhdenoy towards defiance 'that the present regulations generate, would lessen the friction that exists between managers and teachers, and teachers and parents, and contribute materially to the improvement of education." The propo- ser complained that some of the speakers who had referred to the subject had quite misunder- stood the assistant teachers' position. The motion was seconded by Mr Hugh Jones and carried unanimously. The practice of some school boards in rt- quiring from headmasters private and confi- dential reports as to class teachers was strong ly condemned upon the motion of Mr J. T Boulter, seconded by Mr Cullum, London. The employment of unqualified teach, < (the number at present being more than 12,000) wqs condemned, and upon the motion of Mr Tur- ner, Nottingham, seconded by Mr Hardwick. it was decided to support the candidature oi Mr Allen Croft for the vice-presidency < f the N.U.T. The Executive was authored to ex- pend not more than jB50 in furthering Mr Croft's candidature. Upon the motion of Mr Goldstone, seconded by Mr J. C. Milner (Sheffield), the opinion was expressed that the passing of the Superannua- tion Act rendered it imperative that the Gov- ernment should give reasonable security of ten- ure by teachers by providing a court of appeal for cases of unjust dismissal. I Mr Egbert Ruse was elected vice-president; Mr Allen Croft and Mr J. T. Boulter were re- spectively re-elected hon. treasurer and hon. secretary, and the candidates elected on the Federal Committee were:—Mr Carr, Mr Gold- stone, Mr E. Williams, Mr Cullum, and Miss Lane (London). It was left to the Federal Committee to lo- j cate next year's conference, no definite invita- tion having been received from any town. The dinner at the Drill Hall in the evening was well attended. Mr William Harris, dis- trict president, occupied toe chair, and speech- es were delivered during the progress of the toast list by Mr V. A. Wills, Rev Dl. Lewis, Rev J. Thomas, Mr J. E. Holden, the High Constable, Mr W. Griffiths. Pencaemawr, Mr W L. Daniel, Mr Marshall Jackman, Mr W. Edwards, M.A., Colonel D. Rees Lewis (who urged that the children of tiie town generally required to be more cultured than respectful) Mr Tom John, Mr Allen Croft, and Mr E. Wil- liams. An excellent programme of music was carried out bv Miss Jennie Ffoulkes, Mrs W. Harris, Mr P. S. Evans, Mr W. Evans, Mr Rees Brice, Mr J. T. Jones officiting as accompan- ist.
