N.S.P.C.C. Pontypridd Branch. PRESENTATION TO INSPECTOR RUFF. Inspector luff, who has done very service- able work on behalf of the National Society for the Prevention cf Cruelty to Children dur- ing his three and a half year's stay at Ponty- pridd. where he was in charge of a very ex- tensive populous district, has been removed to Maidstone, and with a view of expressing ap- preciation of his valuable services the mem- bers of the local branch decided to make him a presentation. A meeting of the committee was held at the County Court buildings on Tuesday evening, when Inspector Ruff ivaspre- sented with a cheque for a substantial amount the subscribers incrjdmg Lord Aberdare, Mr Godfrey Clark, J.P., Talygarn; Mr and Mrs Gcr-lon Lenox, Pontypridd, Messrs Spickett and Sons, and other well-known ladies and gentlemen who take an active interest in the work of the ^soc'.cty. Mid-Glamorgan District Indopendsnt Order of Reehabstes. I The atmual meeting of the Mid-Glamorgan district was held at the Washington Temper- ance Hotel, Perth, on Monday. Bro. Wm. Jenkins. D.C. Ruler, presided. The D.C.H. most heartily welcomed the officers and re- presentatives to the meeting, hoping that the business brought before them would receive the. usual careful consideration it deserved. From the balance sheet for the year of 1898, which, together with the auditor's report, was received by the meet-ng, we gather that a. large increase has been made in the funeral funds, notwithstanding the large amount of £ 197 15s. 9d. paid to the tents of the district to help members paying their contributions owin<* to the late disastrous strike. The in- Come from contributions was E337 16s. 8d., interest £ 138 18s. 6d., the amount paid for funeral claims of 13 members being £ 137. The balance on December 31st was no less than £ 3,300 lls. 6-2!d., a gain of L113 after paying the afore-mentioned amount of £ 197 15s. 9d. The district Secretary reported the member- ship as 1,901. The election of officers resulted as follows:—D.C.R., Bro. John Powell, Porth; D.D.R., Bro. R. Bevan, Pontypridd; P.D.C.R. Bro. Wm Jenkins. Ynyshir; D.T., Bro. C. Hunt, Ferndale; D.S., Bro. D. M. Refuge Assurance Company. ANNUAL MEETING OF AGENTS. The full staff of ths Pontypridd and Rhondda districts of the above Company met at the Washington Hotel, Porth, by the kind in- vitation of their respective superintendents, M: R. Castle and Mr Edwin Davies, to cele- b-ate their annual meeting. After a substantial repast had been partaken of (provided by host Newton) a miscellaneous programme was rone through. The SJuth Wales divisional -manager, Mr S. Hayes, took the chair, and delivered a powerful speech, full of enthusiasm ar-rl good advice. He remarked upon the wide- spread area of the company s business, which rendered it possible for the Company to ex- perience a highly successful year, in spite of the unfortunate coal strike, which raged for nearly six months cn the South Wales coal- field. He congratulated the agents upon the ruble manner in which they had held their agencies all i hron: h the deplorable dispute, :r.J. trusted that the day would be far distant when a repe'.ition wjuld occur. Mr Bell (inspector), gave a pithy and somewhat humor- ous address on "knowing and doing," which was much appreciated. Mr Olivers (Ponty- pridd) gave a paper on "An agent's duty" which wa-s certainly a first-rate maiden effort. An interesting feature was the presentation of prize certificates, beautifully designed, lithographed, and f-a:ned specially for such occasions. One of these was presented to Mr n.rker, of Tylorstcwn, and another to Mi Hy. John, Pontypridd, for the best increases in the Industrial and Ordinary brunches respectively. Tiicsc were the pii,;es offered last year bv the superintendent, Mr R. Castle, and keenly competed for. n" E. Davies, Pentre, gave an address, and Mr Tom Howells, PF ntre, humorously <le c~;bod "People we meet," which caused rc<trs of laughter. Mr R. Castle, jn an enthusiastic address dwelt on "Don'ts" by the dozen, and was presented by the combined staff with a handsome stationery cabinet as a mark of their esteem and good- will towards him on the division of the Rhon- 41-ia district, which had increased so rapidly under his supervision during the last few years Tho recipient, suitably responded, and dwelt upon the friendly and harmonious manner in whtch they had worked together for several years past. A more useful present they could not have devised. Sengs end recitations were intcrspersc-t, given by agents J..Williams, T. R. Williams (Tylors'own), Morton (Ynyshir), hpcctor Bell (Cardiff), and Supt. R. Castle Pontypridd), and altogether a very educative *nd pleasant evening was spent.
