Eddy. a scientific Chemist. obtained it from the late Dr. ARMSTRONG, (Lecturer at St. Thomas's Hospital, London, and Author of the celebrated Works on Typhus and Scarlet Fever, &c. &c.) for his Wife, who in 18-27 became the Doctor's patient, when evidently labouring under confirmed Liver complaint, and to all appearance in a deep decline. She had not long taken the Pills, at the prescribed intervals, before she was perfectly restored to health; and has, with the occasional use of them, con- tinued free from pain, and in perfect health 4iid cheerful spirits ever since. The Possessor of this admirable Prescription (a Gen lleman of private fortune) having distributed ihe Pdls with the most extraordinary success amongst the Poor in many Counties in England, in 1835 determined to offer them, at a price, to the public; his personal observation and experience having convinced him, that they would prove a real blessing,if taken according to the Physician's Advice and Directions in the wrapper, to all-both old and young, children as well as adntts, women pregnant and after the i-iojitli of confinement—who suffered from an inactive Liver, and thence all the attendant miseries of Indigestion BH.IOUS Affections (so called); Fla- tulence, Jaundice, Droliss, Paiii in the Sides and under the Shoulder Blades; Difficulty of Breathing; distress- ing Sensation of Choking; with the Complexion, and white of the eyes, yellow. I would fain hope that the report is not correct: but such a statement if circulated without contradiction, coming from the chief law adviser of the King, may do much mischief. With the sentiment itself we are. unhappily, too familiar for it to excite our surprise. Unscriptural and ungodly as it is, it has obtained too wide a currency in our times, and unwarily andsillfully been patronized by too many of whom we might have hoped better things, to awaken wonder, however it call for our grief and sorrow. God hath spoken once, twict have I heard this, that power belongeth unto God. Such are the words of inspired truth. But, alas! God speaks once—yes, twice, and man perceives it not. His words, still, do not withdraw man from his purpose, nor hide pride from man. The language of sillful man still continues to be, our tongues are our own, who is Lord over us? But to court popularity by exposing the retirement of the family, and c aim a merit for nursery ungodli- ness. is a new and startling feature. Are we come to this?—an officer of the Crown to exhibit his wife as eagerly busying herself in the unhappy process of demoralizing his own children, and teaching them to suck in Atheism with their mother's milk Deceived, indeed, must he be, if sincerely countenancing in his family nursery lessons that need only ripening and applying to turn every family into a den of discord and Babel of confusion. "Fervently may we hope that Lady Stratheden is innocent of the charge thus stated to have been laid against her own domestic privacy. We may well hope that there cannot be a Christian mother so lost to the sense of maternal duty as not only to neglect the instruction of her children in their baptismal vows, but actually to train them, from the breast, to rob God of his prerogative, and to poison their moral life from the very beginning. The doctrine of the people the source of power," hollow as it is under every form, is fearfully aggravated in guilt and folk, when we view it as taught by a mother to the children whom she is nursing in infant helplessness. But if the plague have indeed bugun, and British ladies are to be found who turn the nursery into a seed-bed for such false and most unholy maxims, it is the duty of the watchmen whom God has appoi ited to watch over his Church to give them solemn warlin of the bitter harvest which they, above others, may expwt to reap. Should they become activeaccomplices in unchristianizing the minds of the young, and in- fecting them with the spirit of pride and the maxims of lawless self-will, as they would siu doubly against the lessons of their nature as well as the precepts of the Gospel, so they may expect a double share of re- tribution. Whenever God's long-suffering should be provoked to loose for a little the spirit they had ma- tured, the dregs of the bitter cup would be theirs. They might then learn, too late, what the French Re- volution, and all history of civil strife, might teach them now, thdfrue nature of that power which tnev had been fostering, and experience that woman's de- gradation and misery are ever the first fruits of the people's unbridled sway. May it please our merciful God long to avert from them, and from our countrv, so fearful a curse; and may every British mother, its she values her own peace aud her children's true good, seek grace to train them up iu that fear of God and reverence for his power and truth, which alone rein form a barrier against sensual licentiousness and lawless violence. MADAME NIALIBRAN. A great deal of sentimental trash has been published in the London and provincial papers respecting Madame Mal ibran-otherwise De Beriot. The manager of Drury Lane, with his usual good taste, is about to make money of her memory, by a "Grand Commemoration." as he calls it, "oi the Departed Genius of Music/' It is a disgusting affair, and altogether alien to English feelings. Madame De Beriot was an exceedingly clever actress, and a first rate singer. The character in which she was most popular was that of Fidelio; and the following is Von Raumer's opinion of her performance. Her dress was perfectly simple grey trowsers, a sort of frock coat reaching to the knee, of tie same colour, and a black leather girdle. It is almost incomprehensible how so elegantly formed a woman could contrive so entirely to conceal all the feminine graces of her person, "that there was nothing to excite even curiosity She wore no rouge, and her pallid face and dark expre,si,-e eyes, with the melancholy tones of her deep and beautiful voice—these, indeed, rivetted eye, and ear, and heart. The moment ill which she discovers and resolves what, and bow, she has to act, her countenance and demeanour rose into something truly awful. She spoke English more distinctly and harmo- niously than j have ever heard it spoken on the stage. The principal scene of the second (here the third) act was as usual, the most effective, it would be difficult, if not impossible, to define, in a few words, in what conristedthe difference between her performance of it and that of other actresses. Do not conclude from what I say that I am unjust to them; but I can acknowledge no monopoly of genius, and here I saw a fresh proof that it is creative. Often and variously as I have seen Fidelio acted, this view, this representation of the character was entirely new to me—unexpected, and, in itself, perfect. Milder, with her magnificient tones and person, was more imposing. From the moment she catne on the stage you felt and knew that she must con- qiier. Schechner's voice was fuller and more profoundly touching. SchroBder-Devrient united the sweetness and the charm, with the romantic devotion, of woman; and the torrent of her enthu- siasm bore you along with resistless force. "Malibran betrays the long-suffering, the heart- wearing anxiety, the dubious mind till at length the strength of her heart and her love overcome all anxieties and all doubts. To each her own. Each fulfils the part for which nature, and the e,baracter of her genius, has fitted her."
