NEATH. Considerable excitement prevailed in the town of 1,)nllitv 1, Nea'ii, on Monday last, in consequence ol a report that Tiiomas Morgan, a well known character, had come to lti,, tie,,itli in consequ-iice of injuries sustained in a fight on Easter Monday last. Mr fjijrgreaves, solicitor, attended to watch the proceeding^ The deceased :tf¡OilJ on the 19th instant on the following circumstances:—QQ Easier Monday, the 12th ipstapt, he was in the Blue Boar Public nous, in Meath, when Richard Evans and Dayid _fliOMias came into the house j in a few minutes a little girl came in with a basket of oranges, and deceased was bargaining for two of them for his «:h.|dreii when Richard Evans took one out of the basket and put it between bis legs, uplln which deceased told hull to give the orange back which he had taken out of the basket; and Evans replied he had not taken one; they both rose up and he laudlord (also named Thomas Morgan), fearing they were going to fight, got between them and putting one of his hauds ou each of them said, You shan't make a row in my house." and <Lece»S(e4 11t down but Evans struck the landlord to the ground d fyp and David Thomas kicked and heat him while on ttie ground until he was quite stunned; they then left, and the jijtjdlord came to himselt shortly afterwards with the astfistijijce pf his wile and daughter and he again sat down in bis kitchen and in about half au hour afterwards Richard Evans, David Thomas and his brother John Thomas, and one Thomas Evans returned, and made straight for the landlord (Thomas Morgan), knocked tlbe ^o.dlest^k and candle (which was put out) off the table, and struck the landlord down, kicked him into the adjoining room, and from thence down into cellar; thev then attacked the deceased, but mil1. Ev cis and I) I Thoiuas were observed on to;) of him, healing hilt, near the fire place; when the landlord came to his senses he went to the kitchen, where he saw deceased, who complained to him of his hand being very much hurt; at this time the parties who had attacked him had left the house. The jurv, after being sworn, proceeded to view the body, and on their return the following evidence was Th omas Morgan examined I am the landlord of I the flitie Boar, in this town; I recollect last Monday evening week, the 12th instant; about nine o'clock in the evening there was in the kitchen the deceased, Richard Evans, David Thomas, Thomas Owen, and William Poley; they were all drinking beer; the deceased had a pint of beer to himself"; Richard Evans and [),iVid Thomas had a pint, together; Thomas Owen and William Poley were also drinking together; a little girl came in with a basket of oranges for sale; the deceased was trying to purchase two oranges, when Richard Evans took an orange out of the basket and placed it between his legs; the deceased then told Richard Evans to give the orange back he had tak n, to the little girl Richard Evans said he had not taken it, and they both stood up together; the orange was not found; there was no quarrelling after between them; when they rolH up I stood between them and held up one hand against one of them and the other hand against the other person; they were about half drunk; the deceased then sat down where he had been sitting before; David Thomas then rose up »nd knocked me down; Richard Evans beat and kicked me on the ground they both ktcked me until I was quite senseless when I got up 1 went out to wash myself, and on my re- 11 turn to the kitchen I found Thomas Owen, William Poley, and another man named David Thomas, and the deceased drinking there and conversing in a friendly manner, KicLard Evans and the first named David Thnmas had left; the deceased did not com- plain of being beaten then in about half an hour afterwards tour men came in together. Richard I'.vans, the first named David Thomas. John Thomas, brother to David Thnmas, antI anolher mall from Briton Ferry, whose name I do not know; when they came in they all four rushell at me knocked the canllles out and com- menced attacking me, and kicked me from the middle of the kitchen to the cellar; there were no sticks in their hands; in the confusion I could not identify anybody; I never had any previous quarrel with any of the parlies; they appeared in beer; the deceased was about hall drunk; when I fell inlo the cellar I became quite senseless again and was assisted up by wife; Edward Rees, David Rees, and William Davies callie in ndwef-n the two rolYs; David Kees assisted in preventing their beating me; this was in the dark, with the exception of the fire; when I came up from the cellar, Richard Evans, David Thomas, John Thomas, and another man from IJriton Ferry, had left the house. By the J nry Poley was in the house when the parties came in. When 1 came in the deceased said that he had been abused very much by the four per- sons that attacked me; the deceased showed me his band; there was a little cut on his left hand; it was not much to see; lie was not sure whether it was a kick or a scratch with the fender; the deceased said that they h ul thrown him down on his nack upon the ground; I did not see either of tliem kick or strike the deceased after [was knocked down the first lime there was also William Davies there with the parties I have named; he did not sav that they had beaten him. but had lailen upon him upon the ground. I Jay 1(1 Thomas examined—I live at Neath and am a butcher: I have heard the evidence of the last wit- ness, 'Tiiomas Morgan, landlord of the Blue Boar; I was in the kitchen on Monday we^k last about nine o'clock in the evening; there was present (here the iandlord, the deceasei I, William Davids, William Poley and Thomas O-ven; thev were drinking there the landlord's wife and daughter was in; I kllow Richard Evans and Dhvid Thomas; they were there when I went it, the deceased came in after I went in; when I went in I called for a pint of beer and sat down; the deceased came in shortly afterwards he sat down and called for a pinr of beer a little girl brought some oranges in tor sale; the deceased wanted to buy some oranges for his little children he took two out of the basket and put theni on the table: during the time he was trying to bargain, Richard Evans took all orange out of the basket, and put it between his legs; Mr Morgan then said to Richard Evans. "Give the orange back to little girl; it is a pity to take it from the child;" Richard r Evans denied having taken it I then told Richard Evans to give the orange back, as it was us-less to keep a nuise about it; Richard Evans and David Tholl/as wanted to make a scuffle in the house, and wanted to go at William Davies, who also desired i them to give the. orange hack, when the landlord got up and tried to separate them Richard I'.vans did not stand up to fight the deceased Hichard Evans got up off the chair as if going to strike William Davies, as also did ravid Richard Evans and David Thomas attacked the landlord and threw him down and abused him. and also kicked him as much as they could: I did not get up from my chair; William Davies made an attempt to assist the land- lord, when Richard Evans got William Davies on the ground and began kicking at him Richard Evans and his partner (David Thomas) went out; the deceased did not then complain of being beaten by them in about half an hour afterwards Richard Evans and David Thomas returned, accompanied by John Thoma. and Thllmas Evans of Briton Ferry; the deceased was in the kitchen sitting on the settle; so 1101111 as they callie in they put out the candles and rushed towards the landlord and kicked him into the back room and from thence to the cellar; I cannot say they all tour kicked him, nor that they follow ed him into the cellar I was struck down by Thomas Evans, and the first tiring ( afterwards saw was Richard Evans on the deceased upon the ground; I saw William Rees, the police officer, taking him off the deceased they were scuffling, and the policeman then separated (hem; the deceased then got up; I did not hear the deceased complain of any thing; the parties went away directly tog.-thpr; [ had no con- versation with the deceased afterwards; the deceased appeared to have been drinking beer; I did not hear him complain anything about his band, hut he appeared very uneasy. I saw the deceased on the ground and three or tuur persons upon iiiiii I cannot be positive who they were all. but I ain po-itive as to Richard Evans and David Thomas they were scuffling and I went to rescue the deceased from under tliem, but before I could do so I was obliged to use IIIV club three or four times the deceased appeared quite well when I raised bim up; I did not see a poker or any other weapon there; I saw him Oil the following dilV, alld deceased staled that be wou'd have a warrant against the four. \Vill¡¡¡11I Griffiths Jones examined —1 alii a surgeon residing in this town I attended the deceased in conjuu lion with .Mr Nathaniel Jones; 1 \f is ea'led by Mr Jones to attend the deceased on Sunday morning last, tlw Istil instant between nine and ten o'clock I found him suffering a great deal of delirium and wandering of mind; thai was most apparent; mv attention was called to his left lintid. it was verv much swollen, and that swelling extended over the whole of the fore arm there were a great many vessels or bladders on the arm, and it was very red and hot; that was the general appearance 1 also noticed par- ticularly a cut ou the back of thelefi baud, and likewise as if there bad been ;I bruise near the elbow joint or iiiiek part that was the most prominent appearance that presented itself to iny eyes; having seen what was the matter with him I treated him accordingly up to the period of bis death; my opinion is that the primary cause of his death was the bruise Oil his band; the secondary cau-e was a bad constitution, and not calling in ipedical advice in sufficient time; those tilings I have mentioned produced erysipeles and mortification, which caused his death. Joliti Morgan, tho son of the deceased, was called, who staled that there was no braite on the band of 'be deceased previous to thenightof tbe }lh instant; that he did work from that time until t|je <la\ of his death, which happened on Monday, the lyth instant. I he inquiry laatecj about six hours. The Coroner then summed up. and the jury retired for about a quarter of all bour, and returned a verdict of manslaughter against Richard Evans and David TIII/lllas. No clue can be obtained to Richard Evans or David Thomas, they having left the neighbourhood pjil £ ,e Sunday Inst in consequence of the danger de- ceased was Ill, much credit is due to the constables for the trouble and care they had talsse iq enijuayour- itig to apprehend them, though unsuccesslul Such a brutal case has not been heard of in the neighbourhood by the oldest person living there. An inquest was held atthe Neath Union Workhouse on the same day. on the body of Edward Young mate of the schooner Maria, of Cork, aged 35 The eaptain deposed to his having gone ashore in the evening of lIndaV with the mate of the Richard, of Exeter, schooner, which lay between lli,4 vessel and the ship- ping stage, and at eleven o'clock he was disturbed by the cry of a man over board. when he found that de- ceased had fallen between the Richard and the quay. A surgeon was sent for on Monday, when he found that the spine was injured so much that the lower part of the body was paralysed; he was removed to the Union Workhouse, where he died on Tuesday, having received every attention from the master of the Work- house, and the matron Verdict— Accidental Death." The unfortunate deceased was a very fine man, and left a witlow alld three children. Thomas Jones who stated himself to be a Brass Founder, from Warwick, was on the 17th instant brought before Henry Thomas, Esq, charged with having stolen two pairs of boots. fil-e pairs of shoes, and three single shoes, the property of the Misses Wescoitihe, milliners, residing in Queen Street, in Neath. From the evidence it appeared that Miss Grace Wescmnbe was coming down stairs between eight and nine o'clock, when she observed prisoner I coming out of the parlour with a bundle under his krin, and she asked him what he wanted, upon which he ran away she gave the alarm and lie %ir.is pursued, and in a few minutes brought back to the prosecu- trixel house he then ddiheratelv dropped the articles to the ground from the handkerchief, which tva* wrapped round iheni, and upon the constable arriving to take liin into custody, he asked prisoner his name, who rellied *I'Iioinas Jones. I am a regular thief; I am out of work, and that is the reason I did it." The case was clearly proved, and the prisoner accordingly committed for trial at the next Quarter Sessions.

MERTHYR. OPENING OF THE ENTIRE MAIN LINE OF THE TAFF VALE RAILWAY. For some time past Merthyr and its vicinity have been all alive with expectation for the promised open- ing of the line from Navigation House, and a report that a trial train would be sent up from ("ardift on Monday last brought many hundreds to the railway terminus to witness its arrival. Accordingly, about one o'clock. an engine arrived, drawing after it a tender, and bringing Sir Frederic Smith, the railway commissioner, Mr Bush, engineer, and Mr Joseph Ball, secretary to the riif Vale ItallwayComp-iny. These gentlemen, after a short stay in Mcrtiiyr, dunng which tliey slopped at the Angel Inn, returned to Car- diff. The trip was perlornied without the slightest delav or accident The day. although cold, was very line, allll ws favourable for an examination of the line bv the commissioner Men were at work night and day previous to the opening, and every nerve was strained to enable the directors to fulfil their pledge to the public that the railway would be opened on the 21st. We have been favoured with a copy of an official letter from Sir F. Smith to J. Ball, Esq., and hasten to lay it before our readers, to whom it cannot fail to be very satisfactory, and they will rejoice with us at the well merited compliment paid by Sir Frederic to Mr Bush for the admirable manner in which he has planned and perfected the railway. Esq," On Tuesday evening the bellman went round the town and announced that as the railway was to b., opened next day, the shopkeepers would not open their shops and the townspeople had resolved to make it a special holiday, and we verily believe that save and except on the Sabbath, there never was les work done on any day in this busy place than there was on Wednesday last. On that day the firsttrain was to start at 20 minutes past eight in the mining, and long Jbefore that time crowds of people directed their steps to the terminus or mounted the cinder t;ps, from which they could obtain an excellent view of the trains for a space of two miles. Flags were flying in all directions, and the concord of sweet sounds that filled the air from the bands of music was frequently harshly broken in upon by the roar ot the artillery. It was expected that, as this was the first train that had ever is started from Merthyr, there would be such a crowd of applicants for seats that the hupe of obtaining one 9 was considerably damped, and so prevalent was this opinion that comparatively few Nentured to run the hazard of being refused, and in consequence thereof one third of the seats were unoccupietl, to the great chagrin of many who afterwards heard 01 the fact. The morning was raw and chill, and a sharp cutting wind prevailed all the way, to the great annoyance ot some of the passengers. When all had taken their seats and every thing was ready, the band played M See the Conquering Hero cotnes," and at 20 minutes past light exactly the signal was given and away we went, amidst the sound of the cannon, the music, and tbe cheers of thousands of spectators. All this was soon lost, for in two minutes we were opposite Mr Anthony Hill's house, at Plymouth, and continu ing at the same rapid rate we were "off" Mr Purchase's farm (41 miles) in seven minutes more, and at the same rate we continued our comet course through the wild aud picturesque defiles ot the be lutilul vale of Tafjf. with s-arcely time to catch a glimpse of a scene of grandeur or of softness ere it vanished from our view. Still we flew onward, now skimming o'er the verdant plain, then plunging into the savage ravine, and anon bursting upon the busy haunts of men. who left their labours to gae upon and cheer us in our p-issage, while the loug train of fleecy vapour which we left behind us curled its way into tho clouds or mingled with the stnoke of the many manufactories that stud the banks ot the romantic Taff. and the brute creation, terrified at the suddenness of our approach and the noise ot the engine, fled in all directions, leaving us alone in our glory and making sure of a good offing'' ere they ventured to stop and look round I for the cause of their affright, while the Loud trumpet to the cannon spoke, The cannon to the heavens," announcing our arrival at the respective stations, and bringing out the astonished natives to hail the approach of the illustrious stranger as it dashed in among them, breailiing fire nd smoke and speaking in thqnder. The viaduct at the end of the upper tunnel was the point of greatest interest; but the eye had only a moment to gajie upon the ragged glen beneath ere it was shrouded in the gloom of the tunnel, the horrors or which seemed to produce a strong eflcct upon the ladies. The rapidity of the transit, however, did not admit of thought, or allow alarm to prevail for a long time; every instant brought a change, and every change a renewal of excitement On arriving at the top ol the incline we were detained some little time, as we were at other points on the road, but the rate of travelling, when going at the general pace, was that of one mile in two minutes. We arrived at the station at Cardiff at two minutes to ten, having been one hour and thirty-eight minutes, inclusive of stoppages, in making the journey. The trip was perforulI11 in the happiest manner, and without the least accident, /il) the party were in high spirits, and were of a humour to make the best of the worst,but there was no occasion, for all went well off, as did all the other trips V\ e heard but of one mishap. An unlucky wight, whose evil startempterl him to alight at the Navigation lIouse station, was left on the road. He had scarcely put his foot to the ground, when away went the train and disappeared like a meteor, carrying off his umbrella, which he had to thank the gentlemen of the railway for taking care of for liiin. With a spirit worthy of a better cause, he determined not to be left behind, and started off after the flying train, with a speed that awakened a doubt ia the spectators which would win the race finding, however, that be was like to be beaten he gave in, and had to submit to the condolence of the passers by, who asked,—a needless question, when his heated face and hurried air are considered— whether he had missed the train?< A the day ad vanced the trains were more heavily laden, and the last was a bqnjper. for there was not a seat unoccupied in all the carriages, and many were left behind who wished to go. Towards the close of the day the little difficulties that had been occasionally encountered, and whjcli had caused unavoidable delays, were com- pletely surmounted, and the last train that came from Cardiff left at four in the afternoon and reached Mer- thyr at five, having gone the distance within the hour, although every part of the train was crammed with passengers. The weather had become milder, and the day closed beautifully, and it was enjoyed by such a number of well dressed and holiday people as we have never before beheld in Merthyr. Parties had been made for the trips, some in quartetto. some in trio. but the main body in duo, the lover and his mis- tres; "bQ Ever gay among the gay. Were gayer on this holiday. The teetotallers took the opportunity of scattering t.heir papers from the train, but we fear that amid the merry doings and jollity, and thirst supposed to b- consequent thereupon, their precepts availed but little among the animated crowds not that we saw any instance of the violation of the rules of sobriety, for at five in the afternoon we had not seen a single "surveyor." that is, a man having business on bollt sides of the street. Sir J. J. Guest kindly invited nil the gentlemen who came up by the train to partake of break., fast at Dovvlais House, where a table spread with every luxury and the choicest wines evinced the hospitality of the lion. Baronet anll his nohle Lady. and these delicacies were partaken off amid many expressions of the high sense of the honour that the guests felt had been done them by their generous enter- tainers. Several toasts were drunk, and appropriately responded to, among which were "The health of Sir John and Lady Charlotte Guest," The health of the Directors," Success to the Tall Vale Railway," "The Trade of Merthyr." About 80 gentlemen sat down to table. Among the company was Professor Airev, of Cambridge, whose health was drunk, in an elegant I speech, by Mr Collin, in returning thanks for which he expressed his warm sense of the hospitality that had been shown him, not onlv at the mansion where he then was but at the houses of other gentlemen in this part of the country, and spoke of the gratification he felt at witnessing the completion of a great national work, that would facilitate the transport "f the vast mineral treasures with which the Vale of Tall abounds and ereatly increase the prosperity of a large district, already celebrated for the energy and enterprise of its inhabitants The company departed highly gratified with the entertainment, and much more so with the politeness and attention of their distinguished hosts. Several gentlemen connected with the railwav dined at the Angel Hotel, and another party of gentlemen dined at the Castle Hotel, in honour of the occasion. 'Thus passed a day big with great events for Merthyr —a day for ever memorable, as bringing her within an hour of the sea, and annihilating time and space to advance and enrich her-a day from which her sons will count when they are telling of her greatness to the yet unborn, and which thev will name as a epoch of real triumph, of true and peaceful glory, unstained with blood and undimmed with tears. It gives us much pleasure to state that w have been favoured with the opinions of several scientific gentle- men upon the construction of the railway, and from them we learn that it has been finished throughout in a manner highly creditable to the talented engineer, Mr Bush, and the gentlemen who so ably seconded him in his arduous undertaking. Every praise is nIsI) due to Mr Ball, the secretary, for the excellence of hi0 arrange- ments on this occasion, in consequent of which every man was in his proper place, and did the duty allotted to him with care and dispatch, so that not tite slightest blonder took place, nor was there a complaint to make on the contrary all were in the highest degree satisfied. We may conclude with stating that the railway opened under the happiest auspices. The young men engaged in the various shops and warehouses are anxious to express to their employers their thanks for their liberality in closing their establishments, and allowing them the opportunity of pp sharing in the general holiday on this occasion, and we feel much pleasure in conveying their thanks to their employers. FATAL ACCIDENT. —At the Plymouth works, on I hnrsday morning, as Philip Him, a miner, was at work in a level with his son, a boy about 12 years of age, a mass of stone was suddenly disengaged and fell upon liiiu in such a manner that his head was completely separated from his body, and of course, he died inslantlv His son,who was at work close to him,was aiso struck by the stone, and received a severe hurt, but fortunately escaped with his life. The deceased was 4'2 years of age, and has left a widow and five citiltiren to lament their unhappy bereavement.
