By Lieut. Col. MITCHELL. We have rarely seen so able a work written in so easy a style, in which the difficulties arising from the conflicting accounts respecting Wallenstein must have been very considerable. Few greater men, and few of more singulai and interruptedly recorded history than Wallenstein ever existed; and the puhlic has been led to an improper estimate of his character by the political bias of I Schiller in liis 'I'l,irty Years' War.' and Dramas. Without descending to the meanness of undue praise, it is one of the best-written books which we have, in our varied departments, inspected its style is elegant, its sense is sound, whilst its views of and its indefatigable industry in eliciting truth from almost concealed documents, are most creditable to the author. The character of Wallenstein is rescued from the asper- sions with which a weak and iiitirderoiis prince thought fit, in his own defence, to allow it to he onpratccl; the proud but honourable soldier, the greatest genius of his country, the man of unfathomable mind, rises before us vindicated in that glory which most assuredly belonged to him. Throughout his mighty and splendid career we see him as he is,—not bedaubed with the slime of his factious elleiiiies, but impreguahle in the majesty of his sOlll and the blaze of his renown. In this Colonel Mitchell has shewn consummate skill, great critical powers, and most undisguised impartiality he ha*, from scanty data, woven together a history of truth which must preserve its place among national and biographical uicords. We will not analyse this work, according to our custom, for it is one of such a standard class that ail should read it; and those ,-Iio ii,y value our critical remarks will be far more gratijied by our recommendation, as an incentive to i's perusal, than by any analysis which we can offer, when they have ac- tually perused it.
