The Directors have already proceeded so far, in obtain- ing a Charter from the Crown, as to have got it signed by the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. It has been, in the usual manner, transmitted to London for his Sign Manual, which will be affixed as soon as the Sub- scription List of the Company shall have been to a reasonable extent, completed. The most eligible Port on the west Coast of Ireland has been selected for a Steam Pa-ket Station, viz.- Birturbuy Bay, in the County of Galway, from whence it is proposed to carry a Rail Road in a direct line thrnnmh Alhlone to Dublin. The distance is only 110 miles, and the line of country presents unusual facilities for the formation of a Had Road, the country being level and containing abundance of IlIarerials necessary for the con- stuction of the work. The averjge inclination through- out the whole line is 1 in 672, and is obtained without great embankments or deep cuttings, and will be entirely free from Tunnels and Viaducts. The Directors have to announce that they have an offer of as much Land as will suffice for 20 miles of the Rail Road, the ground requisite for Wharfs, Docks, and Stores 100 acres of building ground on the margin of Birturbuy Bay, for ever, at a pepper corn rent. and likewise the unanimous approval of all the Landowners alon6, the line Proprietors of Five Shares will be eii,,itle(i to a Free. .> DESTRUCTIVE FIRE AT THING, HERTS 40- Last week intelligence was received by the Sun Fire-office, in which the property is partly insured, and likewise by Messrs. David Evans and Co. silk-mercers in Cheapside, to whom the pro- perty belongs, that a most destructive fire had broken out on the previous afternoon, between 1 and 2 o'clock, at the extensive silk-mills ofMessrs Evans and Co. in the immediate vicinity of the town of Tring. From the accounts which have reached the quarters before named, the following general out- line of the dreadful calamity is obtained. The milis are of vast extent, and raised to a height of five stories, and at the time of the accident, trade being very brisk, as many as 800 workpeople, of whom a large proportion were young girls, were kept in constant employ. At noon, as usual, the workers i left to get their dinner; all was then apparently safe, as also on their return and resumption of their work at 1 o'clock. About half-past 1 o'clock the housekeeper, who occupies a cottage adjacent to the mill, on going outside her door, saw a thick nmoke rising from an upper story of the factory. An alarm was instantly given, but before any means could be taken to ascertain the nature of the danger, flames burst forth, and spread with great rapidity along the fourth floor of the mill, and thence to the floor above. Expressess were instantly sent off to Ayles- bury, from whence two large engines were sent and two others were brought from the town of Tring* Lady Bridgewater and Mr Hay, who are residents in the neighbourhood, and have each a private engine, likewise promptly sent them to the spot, and the inhabitants for miles round showed the most commendable disposition to render every assistance in their power. There was, fortunately, an ample supply of water from an adjacent poud, or rather small lake, of about 12 acres, whence a pow- erful and well-directed stream was kept constantly playing on the fire, which was eventnully got under after having destroyed ihe whole of the two upper- most floors, and materially damaged the one next below. Mr David Evans had left London that very morning on a visit to his silk-factory, and on reach- ing Berkhamstead, on his way down, about 3 o'clock in the afternoon, had the mortification to learn, as the common talk of the place, that his valuable and well- known factory, distant about 8 miles, was then in flames. He hurried on to Tring, where he arrived in time to witness the melancholy confirmation of the rumeur. The flames were then blazing- most fiercely. The fire, according to the accounts as yet obtained, is believed to be purely accideiiial. It is said that a workman had occasion to go up shortly before dinner-time to a dark aparlment on the fourth floor, and that he took with him a lighted candle and as the fire is known to have broken out in this part of the building, it is supposed that by some carelessness or accident ifre was then set to a pait of the loose matenals therelll. A surveyor was yester- day sent down by the Sun-office to make full inqui- ries into the extent and cause of the calamity. The property is insured in the Sun, the Protector, and other offices, altogether to the amount of ^14,900 which, it is believed, w'itt amply cover the loss to the proprietors but still the calamily to tbe popu- lation of Tring and the neighbourhood, which .a¡.y depends on these works, is likely to prove most distressing, for it is not expected that the full business of the mill can be brought into operation for three months to come, and in the meanwhile the spring demand will have been furnished from other quarters.

On Sunday afternoon, a well-known orator, who is rendering himself notorious in his advocacy of Radicalism, and an unstamped press, delivered a lec- ture to prove that there is no state of future rewards and punishments,-Standard. On the first meeting of a Bench of Magistrates in this county, after the Poor Law Amenornent Hit had receired the Royal Assent, twoyounjr unmarried women made their appearance therrat for the pur- pose of declaring the fathers of their unborn infaiits, when the usual papers were made out by the clerk for appreheudiug the reputed papas but, 10' ore of the Magistrates, an M.P., just arrived from London, having knowledge that the Royal Assent had been given to the Act, the women were, accordingly, in- formed that they must themselves keep their iiifktns when unborn. One of the women immediately replied that "it was a rascally Act of Parliament and that at least nine months' notice oug-ht to have been given before it passed," and went out of the room muttering something about ''such ungentic- manly conduct would not have been practised bv their sex.Bi-ighton Gazette. FEMALE SAILORS.—A correspondent 'vrifes us —"Having seen lately in the'public papers an account of a female sailor serving on board a man- of-war, it may be interesting to your readers to earn that three females served end fought or. board the Victory, in Lord Rodney's engagement with ths 1, rench they were discovered after the battle to be females, and were sent on shore at Lisbon; where they were clothed at the expense of the British factory there, to which Mr Turner, formerly of this city, was then the tree surer; a collection was made for them, which amounted to about 25 moidores. They were afterwards sent to Falmouth by one of the packets, and brought to their homes in this city. They belonged to the parish of St. Edmund- on-the-Bridge one of them was blind of an eye, a very stout lusty woman; the others were short, but stout. They had served at tile glitis most valiantly during the whole of the engagement, and had not received any injury."—Western Lumi:iury. k AN UNLUCKY MISTAKE.—On Sunday morning last, during Divine service, the respectable congre- gation of the new church at New Mills, Derby- shire, were for a time thrown into a state of consternation, by an announcement which was made by the worthy clerk, with all the solemnity befitting such melancholy intelligence, before he gave out the hyuin, and which was couched in these terms :—" 1 have just received a postscript, announcing the death oj our much injured and beloved Queen, who departed this life last night at ten o'clock-let us sinj to the praise, &c." Such melancholy and unexpected news, of course, pro- duced an "uncommon sensation," and great was the amazement of the worthy villagers at the rapidity with which the information had travelled to reach that remote part of the country in such a very short time. At the conclusion Of tile service, the clerk was besieged by anxious inquiries as to the author of this melancholy postscript, and by the assistance of Mr Wood, the organist, the mys- tery was at length solved to the joy and satisfac- tion of all parties. It appeared that Mr ood, being desirous of changing the hymn originally- intended to be sung, for another which ha con- sidered more appropriate or more convenient, to prevent confusion he wrote a note to that effect to the clerk. In the hurry he tore a slip of paper from an old letter which he had in his pocket, and wrote on the blank side of it, without examining the contents of the other side. Lnlortunately this scrap of paper was part of an old letter which an- nounced the death of the late Queen Caroline, and the clerk, without looking at the information which it was specially intended to convey to him, supposed that the news was sent to be eoramtrn' cated to the congregation.—Manchester Courier.
