COUNTY BUSINESS." .
COUNTY BUSINESS." A parliamentary paper bearing, the above title lias ir ,beenr ir11 r'rr8 *«»»«« £ Clerks of the Peace of England and Wales resnec lively, stating whether the general business of the county relatiug to bridges, prisons, county-rates, and other matters required to be done by the mao-istrates at their quarter sessions, is transacted by them in the open court appointed for hearing appeals, and for the trial of misdemeanours and other from these returns it appears that the onlv coulltit.s in which the general business is transacted in open court of quarter sessions are, in Eugland, Cumhprla, Derbyshire, Devonshire, Middlesex, Nottinghamshire' Surrey, Westmoreland, and the West Uidiu^of YorkI shire; and in Wales, Cardiganshire,Carmarthenshire Merionethshire, and Pembrokeshire:-that in several counties, though the business is not brought forward in open court of quarter sessions, still it is transacted ,n places to which the public h*ve free access These counties are in England, Essex, Glouce S shire, Hampshire, Herefordshire, Hertfordshire, Hunt- ingdonshiie, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, Uut- Jandshire, fcouerselshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, and Wiltshire; and m Wales, Breconshire, Glamor- ganshiie, and Radiioi,sliii-e:-ttiat in the following counties, the business is transacted in private, none but the magistrates and those whom they employ or send for being- present :-viz. in England, Bedford- shire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire Cornwall, Dorsetshire, Durham, Parts of Kesleven, Parts of Lindsey, Monmouthshire, Northumberland, Oxfordshire, Shropshire, Sussex, and the East and North Ridings of Yorkshire; and, in Wales Flint- shire and Montgomeryshire:—and that there are several counties to which peculiar circumstances attach, and exclude from the three foregoing classes These counties are Cheshire, Kent, Lincolnshire part of Holland, Norfolk, Suffolk, Worcestershire Carnar- vonshire, and Denbighshire. In most of these coun- ties the business is transacted in public, although not in the court appointed for hearing appeals, and for the trial of misdemeanours and other offences." This parliamentary paper is, to a certain extent, calculated to mislead people, and to induce a supposi- tion that among the magistrates of the counties where the business is not transacted in open court, there is a most insatiable desire to job, and the most sensitive apprehension of detection. The truth, however is that in every county in England, the county business is virtually transacted in public, and there is only one objection entertained to the transaction of this busi- ness in open court. It is, that every item of the ac- counts would furnish a fresh question for debate among- a class of persons who, whether right or wrong' rate-payers or not rate-payers, hold nothing to be of such great importance as their making a public exhibition of their great talents and eloquence." We see no possible objection to as much talent and eloquence as these gentlemen can put together, only not at the expense of the county rate.

HONF.STY REWARDED.—On Thursday morning, as John Hainsworth, a waggoner in the employ of Messrs. Firth, carriers from Leeds, was descending the hill at the entrance into Bradford, he found a small parcel, which he delivered to one of his employers immediately on his arrival. On being opened it was found to contain the large sum of 12,000/ more than haff of which was in cash. It had been lost by the representative of a Leeds House on his way to Brad- ford market that morning. The waggoner was pre- sented with the liberal sum of five pounds. A CATHOLIC PRIEST.-Oll Monday evening-last at a burial at Rahcen, some altercation took place be- tween some of the persons who attended on the occa- sion the priest rah furiottsly amongst the people, armed with a great blackthorn cudgel, and laid about him in such a manner that he overturned men, womeu and children he even took the links from the car sides and upset the passengers, leaving them sprawl- ing on the road, and eryiug for mercy, to be saved from his Herculean arm, and tremendous cudgel. One man, named Edward Laior, fiom Colt, has got several cuts, and, I believe, a fracture in his head, which leaves his life in a very bad state; ulso a man from Derrykim got a severe beating (1 believe named Sliceliaii) from his Reverence.—Leiusler Express.
