THE APPLEBY RECOUNT. The Earl of Kerry, the defeated Unionist candidate in the Appleby Division of Westmor- land, withdrew his petition on Tuesday. Mr. Leif Jones's majority was only three, and Lord Kerry petitioned for a recount and scrutiny, which was begun at the Law Courts on Mon- day. The votes recorded on behalf of the Liberal candidate were taken first, and at the close of the examination it was found that the result was an increase in Mr. Jones's majority to five. In these circumstances Lord Kerry decided not to proceed further in the matter.

XATAL NATIVES FIXED. Tiie chief Mskofeli has paid the fine imposed upon him. At a parade of the Field Force a.t Mapumulo on Saturday. Colonel Leuchars an- nounced ro the assembled natives that a fine of 1.200 cattle and 3.500 sheep and stoats had been imposed on Gobizembe and his tribe, and warned the other chief- to use their authority rightly. 1,

FORTY-SIX-YEAR-OLD BABY. The death has occurred at Westbury Work. bouse. Wiltshire, of a forty six-year-old baby. The child was born in Westburv. and at the age of twelve months its further development, both physically and mentally, was arrested. Through- out its life it was attired in baby's frock clothes, and continued to act and play, and had to be fed and taken care of, precisely as an infant. Some years ago the father receivod tempting offers to exhibit the child publicly. but his parental affection for his abnormal offspring was so strong that he declined all such overtures. Upon the death of the father a few years ago the child was taken to the workhouse.

BURGLAR'S LUCK. Extraordinary conduct on the part of foot- ballers was reported to the Nottingham police on Saturday. It appeared that a woman named Cree saw a burglar (Miter a neighbour' house. She raised an alarm, and clia-ed the man when he emerged from the house, following her quarry across riie Forest recreation ground. She railed to some footballers to -top the thief, but they only replied: "Good luck to him: let him fro." The woman fell exhausted, and the thief got off with a good haul of jeweller}-.

LITTLE GIRL KILLED BY TRAMCAR. A shocking tramway-car fatality has occurred Fit, Golden Hill (Staffs.). On Saturday evening little girl named Maggie Shaw was found on the rramway-line with both leg. cut off and with her body and head badly lacerated. She waa dead, and no one seems to have witnessed the accident. Tln> driver did not know that the car had struck anything, but the conductor, how- ever. as the car passed along noticed something on the line, and went, back only to make the sad discovery.

CONSCIENTIOUS DEBTOR. The creditors of Charles William Evans, grocer, of L'pton-on-Se vern, will receive good news bv the announcement just made at the Worcester Bankruptc., Court. Mr. Evans failed about five n'ar ago. a dividend of Is. d. being paid. He has now become entitled to substantial properry, which will suffice; to pay bIs debtsIit, full with interest. EARTHQUAKE IX INDIA. 'An earthquake, equal in severity locally to the great .shock of I a-a April, has occurred in Rat-hahr. one of the hill States, says a Lahore message. Two persons have, been killed and twenty-four injured at Rampur. In the town the Law Court, post-office, and police-station are destroyed. Six persons have been killed and two injured at Kakoola, on the Hindustan- Thibet road. near Rampur.

OUTRAGES IN POLAND. 'A Warsaw despatch states that in the suburb of Praga on Saturday evening a band of revo- lutionists surrounded a patrol consisting of a police-sergeant, a policeman, and five soldiers. The Anarchists opened fire with revolvers, kill- ing the sergeant and the policeman. The soldiers replied with a volley, killing one man and dis- persing the others. At Pahianice. near Lodz, the chief district officer. Captain Ivanoff, while driving in a cab, was shot and killed by revolu- tionists. The cabman was wounded. The assassins escaped.

SUPPOSED MURDER OF A BOY. 'The Liverpool police are investigating what: appear- to be a tragedy of a terrible character. < Hi Saturday afternoon a workman employed at Anfield Cemetery found the body of a lad named William Armitage. aged twelve, in a lavatory. There was a handkerchief tied round his mouth and a deep wound in the neck. from which death had evidently resulted. The body was still warm when discovered. The boy left home early in the morning on some business for his father, who keeps a, "maH shop. and made several calls. Ho w,m seen in the town about noon. aftiar which there was no trace of him or his supposed assailan t.

NO RELIEF FROM TAXATION. The Chancellor of the Exchequer, replying to a who waited on li*m oil deputation who waited on him on Saturday from the National Trade Defence Association to urge the claims of the liquor trade to a remission of the additional taxation imposed in 1900. was un- able to see any relation between the reduced con- I sumption f of liquor and the increased taxation im- posed a few years ago. The diminution in con- sumption had been due to causes of quite a different nature, tic sympathised with the views of the deputation in regard to was strongly of opinion that the law should be made stronger and be more effectively n.dmini-tered. He could hold out no prospect of any relief from taxation for the trade in the immediate, future.

Rhyl Isolation Hospital. 1 SEQUEL TO LAST YEAR'S SCARE. I On Friday last Dr S W Wheaton held an in 1 quirv in the Rhyl Council Chamber, relative to an application by the Urban District Council to the Local Government Board for sanction to borrow a sum of £600 m respect tj the recent addition to the isolation hospital at Towyn. The Council's case was conducted by the Town Clerk (Air A Rowlands), supported by the Medical Officer Dr A, Eyton Lloyd), J.P., the Surveyor (Mr A A Goodall\and the Sanitary Inspector (Mr R Lowe). The Councillors present were Messrs A Lewis Jones, Chairman of the Sanitary Committee, Thos Whitley, R Oldfield, S Perks J.P., and John Asher. The Town Clerk said that the Council's isola- tion hospital, near Foryd station, was built in 1894, and up to the beginning of last summer had cost iJ:3,lT5 for buildings and equipment. Under ordinary circumstances it was sufficiently large, but there was, at the time he had named. .in unusual outbreak of scarlet fever, with the result that the accommodation, be- came inadequite.10 An attempt was made to find some unoccupied house in which the cases might be treated, but, as it failed, the medical officer, Dr Eyton Lloyd, ad- vised that a temporary building should be forth- with erected at Foryd, where there was plenty of space available. In less than a month the build ing, to cover the coat of which the loan now applied for was required, was constructed and one was ready for the admission of patients. In this way the spread of the disease was checked and confidence restored in the town. Had the additional accommodation been in readi- ness at the first appearance of the outbreak, the Council and the inhabitants would have been spared a great deal of trouble and loss. Exagger- ated reports were circulated, and even to this day cbe town had felt the consequences. The Town Surveyor explained the plans, and stated that a door would be placed at the end of the building, as requested by Dr Wheaton. for use in the event of fire. Mr T Whitley stated that the building bad been very substantially built of timber and iron, and would last for at least thirty years. The Medical Officer said the new building enabled him to empty the town of all infections cases, and declare it free at an earlier date than would have been possible without it. This was a very great advantage at that time of the year, and worth all the money spent to obtain it. The new building would be very useful ordinarily as a convalescent ward, and would be in readiness in case of another outbreak. The cases which oc- curred last summer were all due to an accident- ally contaminated milk delivery. He used the word ddivpry" advisedly, because the whole supply of milk from the farm was not contamin- ated. The whole of the cases were within the ringfence of one particular milk round. The Vicar of Rbyl (the Rev T Lloyd) said he wished cordially to support the application for power to borrow the amount, as a large ratepayer and one deeply interested in the prosperity of the town. He also happened to be the parent of some children who drank the contaminated milk to which Dr Lloyd bad referred. They were treated at the hospital as soon as the new ) structure was ready, and they received every kindness and attention that was possible.—(Hear hear.) It might be pointed out that the number of cases of fever which occurred was not large, though the number was unusual for the dis- trict, which enjoyed such a reputation for health nees. Mr A Lewis Jones, speaking in support of the application, said the Sanitary Committee very much appreciated what had been done under very trying circumstances. He did not know what the town would have done without the hospital. The enquiry then closed with a vote of thanks to the Inspector.

Hockey. The Rbyl men's team fared somewhat dis- astrously in their encounter with Wrexham on Saturday, the visitors winning by 5 goals to 0 To do the losers justice we must point out that they were by no means at full strength-in fact they were one or two players short throughout the match, which, we are reminded, took place within a few hoars of the club dance.

Rhyl Hockey Club Ball. On Friday evening last a ball was held at the Claremont Hydro under the auspices of the Rhyl Hockey Club. The arrangements were carried out by the following committee, with Mr C E Totty as secretary :—Messrs W E Jones, W H Wilders, W Gunner, F Connah, H Connah, LI B Evans, H Cooper, P J Ashfield, N Bibby, A W Lewis, Mrs W E Jones, Miss Kerr, Miss Gunner, Miss Embrey and Miss Parker Davies. The proceedings were of a very enjoyable character, the ball being well patronised. Miss Mabel Hughes acted as pianist, and the duties of stewards were discharged by Messrs LI H Evans, A W Lewis, W Gunner, H Connah, and F Connah. Mr W G Story gave every satisfaction with the catering. What Might Have Been, aid What Might Be. TO THE EDITOR OF THE RHYL JOURNAL. SIR,—Your correspondent, Cynicus," gives a descriptive account of his experiences at Rhyl, but he should have added a few more details to enable his readers to grasp the narrative. We are told that he had a dream and fell asleep upon a seat on the Promenade, basking in the sunshine of a glorious winter's day," but we are not told how many refreshers he had partaken of that morning, nor wheie he obtained them from. We, however, learn that he awoke" from his dream and found himself on a summer's day amidst grass plats, flower beds, and playing fountains. Now, putting joking on one side, it must have been a pretty stiff dose to enable him to sleep on a promenade seat from the glorious winter's day until summer, but since the Council appeared to him to have taken over the coaching system, with a yearly profit," it would require no further stretch of imagination to assume that they had also taken over the hotels and refresh- ment houses as well. This view appears to be supported by Cyuicus, who evidently bore a grudge against Council officials, as is evidenced by his surprise at receiving courtesy in addition to his receipted gas bill. Probably they were overjoyed to find him alive. It is unnecessary to follow him through ail his wanderings during that day unless to study the moral ot his story. If th3 glorious sunshine, grass plats, flower beds, playing fountains, music, Council coaches, electric cars, paid gas bills, and a magnificent, avenue of sycamores, only led to the pagado where our friend had a drink and where he remained until the building collapsed, of what use were they ? We certainly learn that he awoke again on the same Promenade seat, but he does not find words expressive of thanks to his friends who carried him there from the pagoda. Fourteen teams were engaged in Combination matches on Saturday, and in six cases victory rested with the homesters, the only exception to this rule being a draw between Port Sunlight and Nantwich. i The fight for the championship continues as keen as ever. Chester and Whitchurch have been running a very close race for some weeks, first one club and then the other holding a slight advantage. A week before Chester could claim an advantage, but on Saturday they had to acknowledge a 3—0 defeat at Glossop, while Whitchurch, playing at home, accounted for Oswestry by four clear goals. Port Sunlight could only draw with Nantwich, although favoured by playing at home, each side getting a goal; but Tranmere Rovers gained a vic- tory over Crewe Alexandra by the odd goal of three, the winning point being scored close on time by Lee, from a penalty. Birkenhead led the Druids at Ruabon by 2 goals to 1 at the interval, but they fared badly after the change of ends, and were beaten 5-2. A player on each side was ordered off in the second half. Wales sustained a quite unexpected and decisive defeat in the Rugby international at Belfast on Saturday. than their match. The result was a victory for Ireland by 11 points to 6. Rhyl County School Reserves tried conclusions on Saturday with Clement Rovers, and were de- feated by 4 goals to 1. Prestatyn and Abergele met at Prestatyn on Saturday, under the auspices of the North Wales Coast Junior League. The homesters proved themselves the better side, but had to work hard for their 3-0 victory. J Parry opened the score with a magnificent goal, and Robin Hughes took full advantage of a penalty kick just before half- time. The only goal of the second half was ob- tained by Gabe Glass. The return match takes place at Abergele to-morrow (Saturday). To-morrow the Rhyl Combination team are due at Crewe, and next week they will fulfill two home engagements-one with 03westry on Thursday and the other with Nantwich on Saturday.
