SELECTED READINGS.
SELECTED READINGS. BE YOUNG AT SEVENTY —Paople who appear old must expect to be considered so and, if they apply for positions with every appearance that senility hau struck them, they cannot cxpect favourable consideration. Ir grey-haired appli- cants for positions would only appreciate the vaSue of appearances, and would "brace up" when they seek situations-go" well groomed," with elastic sleps, showing that they utiii p ooss fire, force, and enthusiasm—they would eliminate an obstacle grea;er than their grey hairs. We think ourselves into incapacity by looking for signs oi age and dwelling on them, ar.d the body iollows the thought. We should, therefore, avoid the appearances of age in every possible way, by dress, carriage, conversation, and especially by our attitude toward poople and things. It, is not diffi- cult to preserve the buoyancy and freshness of youth, but it iuust be done by constant, effort and practice. A musician who expects to tu&ke only one or two important nppcpranefcs a year must keep up his practice. Yon! M' t'ne. s cannot be put on for a day if old age has a grip on you for months. It is important to prc-eive the fire of youth as long as possible, to carrv freshness and and vigour Kilo oid age by keeping up a hearty interest in everything that interests youth. Many of UK seem to thiuk that youthful sports and pas- times are fo; lish, and, before we know it, we get entirely out cf sympathy with all young life, and conEcquentiy really old, whatever our years. We must think youthful thoughts, SHuocdato with young people, and interest them. Wnen a person ceases to interest the young he is showing signs of old age. WITH WATERY TASTES.—A tourist whose wanderings have taken him as far as Canton, tells of the curious life led by the water population there. There are Chinese there," he said, who have never bet foot on dry land for many years, sonrif ir.dred, who have lived on the water all their lives. They are born, live their lives and die iu I their ecmpan?, r-s the boate are cI,11ed. They are as n' ucli at home on the water as ducks. Even if he commits a ciinie and is detected, Chinese justice does not necessarily remove the water dweller frcm his native element. There are water police and water oouns of law, and the very prison consists of a largo houseboat. Probably the sever- est punishment short of death that could be inflict- ed on some of these aquatic Chinese woald be to compel them to live on dry land." IN DIFFERENT CI.IAIES.Tlie English foot is short and flochy, whi'e the Scottish foot is large and thick, and the Irish flat and more Fquare. The French foot is apt to be meagre, narrow, and bony; the Sprmiard, thanks to the Moorish blood, has a small and delicately-curved foot, and the Arab is characterised by such a high arch that a common saying is fo Lt;" effect that" a stream can run under his foot." The American foot is often very small. A peculiar characteristic of those people whose lives, for generations, have been chief- ly passed-in the sadulo, is that the foot is not only well arched, but has the ankle very high also; eo high in fact, that walking is neither easy nor agree- able. The Mexicans show this characteristic. "POLL" SO TAU(.tiT.-Il There are two ways," said a bii(I-fleal-r, "of teaching a parrot to talk. One way is to put him in a darkened room, to sit in a corner, and to repeat over and over again the word you want him to aoquire. A clever parrot will learo a word or a phrase in some four or five hundred repetition?, while for some it takes a week or more. You must keep still in the room. No sounds from within or without the house, save your voice m,),¡<êol\on..ly repeating the phrase to be acquired, must rs.-a.ch the parrot's ear. Some people teach their birds in a well-lighted room, speaking frlm a p,,Ico of c()tlceaiulpilt in a cup- board, or behind a door. This nreihod is not so good, because in the light the parrot's attention is distracted." A Lf, WHITE AND Such was the deecrip:ion of Java by a leeent visitor to the Dutch East Indies. He continued—"Everything in the way of a buildup, from a mansion to a gate post, is whitewashed once or twice a year. Look- iDg over the landscape one sees dazzling white factories, white cottages and huts, white fences and bri'Jg'r'H that iu. k iiko Parian uiarole. Many of the buiidi"g: indeed, are whitewashed both in* t side and cut. Tho white even extends ts the cloth- ing of the colonifits, who wear whiro ouck suits, white helmets, and white shr.es. The effect of all these whi'.o obji-c'.s ag dast the vivid and intense green of the trees and plon'ations is very striking, and I doubt whether anything like it is to ba seen elsewhere ;n the world." CALAIS' CURIOUS STREET—In Cala:s, not far from the landing-pitr, is what is known as the fisber quarter. The inhabitants of this part of the town, numbering something like two thousand, form a community of their own, and live quite apart from the rest of Calais. The young people never think of marrying out of their quarter, dust in the heart of this district, is a very narrow street, its width being "bout fiva feet at most. The curious thipg about it is that the bottom room of every house is quite isolated trom the upper rooms, and the tenants who wish to go up to the bedrooms have to come out iuto the street and enter another doorway, behind which is a flight of steps loading upstairs. LITTLE FOOD SUFFICES.—" He only has a daily '1 ration of rice and dates, and yet he jogs along t with a bent back under a load that would flatten out a European," says a globe-trotter, in speaking of the Turkish porter. Of course, it is largely a matter of climate, for an English porter would pine away on dates and rice yet, even this con- sidered. the thing is marvellous. Why in India, China, Japan, and adjacent countries there are about four hundred million sturdy, long-lived i fellows who scorn the very uame of meat And did not Darwin himself tell us that the Andean natives do a day's work of four hundred foot tons, nearly twice the work of an ordinary labourer, on a diet of bananas?" CONSIDERED A PRIVILEGE.—In China stran- gulation is reserved for offenders of high rank, it being considered a privilege to pa38 out of life with the body intact. When leave to die in this way has been granted to a criminal, a silken cord is sent to him in prison. No explanatory message is con- sidered necessary, and he is left to accomplish his natives do a day's work of four hundred foot tons, nearly twice the work of an ordinary labourer, on a diet of bananas?" THUS SHIPS ARE NAMED.— French ships are usually named after French provinces or towns, .H wines, victories, ideas, or sentiments, but no j, names, excepting those of grnd men of French J fi history. German ships boar the names of German rivers, ports, poets, elates, aud characters of ) German literature. TIT-BITS.
TIT-BITS. CAUGHT A TARTAR. A story is being told at the expense of a 111 e- tropolitan librarian. He had got into tlio wn\ of considering that if he placed a book ui the library's catalogue ho had done all that could be expected of him. It should be in," he would remark," for it is in the catalogue; and with this remark he 0 would dismiss the applicant, instead of taking steps to find out just when the book in question might be obtainable. One day, however, he caught a tartar. A man had applied for a book greatly in demand, and receded the stereotyped reply: "It's in the catalogue, you know." I know it is," replied the would-be borrow- er but in so condensed a form that I can't read it!"

TOOK NO RISKS. An American tourist doing Scotland put up one night at an okli'asliioned inn a few miles from Aberdeen. During the night he was awakened by the entrance into his bedroom of a figure dressed in while, which walked into the room, and then out. In the morning, when paying his bill, he re- marked to the innkeeper I guess you Scotch people make game of us Americans with your talk of haunted houses. Now, tell me who it was who walked into my bedroom during the night." Weel, sir, since ye've asked," replied the cautions Scot, it wis me. The last American wha slept in my hoose walked off wi' a' the sil- ver, an' 1 diclna care be rin ony risks."
HE WAS RELIEVED.
HE WAS RELIEVED. The other day a person dropped into an apop- lectic fit immediately in front of a police-station, and was directU carried inside. A moment after a woman forced her way in through the crowd gathered round the door, exclaiming My husband! My poor husband Clear the way and let in the air." She then busied herself bv taking off the mail's cravat and performing other little offices till a surgeon arrived and the patient gradually recovered his senses. On this the sergeant i:i charge observed that it was a happy relief for his distressed wife as well as for himself. My wife exclaimed the man why, I am a bachelor." On seeking for the woman it was found that she had disappeared, and with her the watch and purtóe of the patient, which she had adroitb abstracted, under the very eyes of the police,

THUS AVERTED.
THUS AVERTED. A famous Irish agitator and orator had a con- tempt for physical danger. On a certain occa- sion a meeting had been convened, and a large crowd assembled in a room on the first floor of a' building in a small city in Ireland. The orator was about to address the people when a gentleman, pale with fear, made his way to the platform and hoarsely whispered- The floor is giving way The beams that shore it up are cracking, and we shall all fall through in a few iiiinutes Keep silent," said the other then, raising his voice, he addressed the assembly— 1 find that the room is too small to contain the number who desire to come in, so we must leave it, and hold the meeting outside the build- ing." At this a few rose and went out, but the ma- jority retained their seats. Then the orator said— I will tell you the truth: you are Irishmen, therefore brave men. The floor is giving way, and we must leave this room at once. If there is a panic and a rush for the door, we shall all be precipitated into the room below, but if you obev my orders we shall be'saved. Let the twelve men nearest the door go quietly out, then i the next twelve, and so on till all have gone. I shall be the last to leave." His in struct ions were obeyed to the letter, and I he waited, patient and calm, till all had gone out in safety. Then he walked out also.

CONFERRING A BENEFIT. A stylishly-dressed lady sat for two hours in the bedroom of a nick old woman, asking her mouv quedilins about her complaint, and manag- ing in her short-sighted zeal, to worry the poor invalid to the verne of exhaustion. When she finally rose to depart, her daintily-gloved hand strayed to her pocket. "'And now. my good woman, she said, smil- ing sweetly, I wonder if you could fat a few oysters The invalid eagerly expressed her willingness to try. i Then gel yourself some, dear, said my lady, placing a card on th>e bed.
