THE ù\11 ouxnttl Last week we referred to a light punish" meat inflicted on a person charged with disorderly conduct and an assault on the police. This week we have a more gratifying reference to make-to exemplary penalties which the magistrates on two consecutive days have inflicted upon men guilty of rowdy conduct. That so many cases should arise within a week is a strong incentive to the magistracy to deal with a tirm hand with the offenders. Peaceable people will rejoice thereat, and so will the police. It so happens that the majority of our constables here are recruits, aDd there are some men who think, apparently, that they can be treated with contempt and are fair butts for abuse. An inquiry of considerable importance touching harbour rights and claims was held at Rhyl on Friday. The Council made a -v good case for their contention but to J, parents all the chiH^„~ ^— ■■ ■ ouf mind their case would have been stronger were it not for the fact that the Lord of the! Manor has already granted a lease to the one in possession. It appears that the Council had! not approached the Lord of the Manor in the matter of improving the navigation, a work they are now apparently anxious to perform. Whilst they were sleeping, another steps in and takes their birthright. We fear there is no prospect for some time of their being able to put up a memorial stone with their names carved thereon at the Foryd During the recent high tides some veiy fine wave sights were observed at the East and West Promenade extremities. They were witnessed by large crowds during the day tides. The Council walls have stood the buffeting without damage. But outside the Rhyl district towards Prestatyn the saudbanks have suffered terribly, as they do at every extraordinary high tide. In a few years the sea will cover the adjacent fields for many miles and the railway will in all probability be under water. Whitford Parish Council has set forth its case for a railway to run through its upper regions, according to the County Council scheme. They say there are limestone quarries in the parish, and lead ore in the mines, which are not worked owing to immense volume of water." But they believe if a railway were formed this water would be pumped out The Central Railway people will be able to set their proper value on these inducements." The Parish Council states that the population of the uarish is 3,212 but they omit to add that more than one half of that number are in the ecclesi- astical parish of Mostyn, through which a railway is already running.

Etymology of Rhyl. TO TIn: EDITOR OF THE RHYT. JOCRXAL. SIR,—After reading with much pleasure and )rofit the very interesting letters that have ap- )eared in the Journal respecting the origin and ,he meaning of the name of our charming town, I laturally feel diffident in a.dding yet another, and [ fancy there will be a few surprised murmurs Lie y buost ti hyd yn awr," but my excuse is as allows: It was only a few days ago that I had the privilege of a conversation on the subject with a entleman u-one of the best living authorities on the etymology of Welsh place-names. He said, The origin of the name is not far to seek. Ty'n yr Rhyl, together with some other houses, must have stood on the side of an old road the prin- cipal one in the neighbourhood—that part would be Yr Heol, Welsh for the road, the street and the transition would easily follow—' Rheol, Rhewl,' I Rhyi. He also stated that he had seen an old document mentioning Angharad Llwyd, Ty'n yr Rhewl, and a subsequent one Angharad Llwyd, Ty'n yr Rhyl. It is very possible that it was a pretty conceit of the old lady's to adopt the latter form, as being more uncommon. The name "Rhewl" is fre- quently to be met with in Wales, but I have not heard of another Rhyl." The hypothesis regarding the old road (Vale Road) we all know is correct, and also that there are still remaining a few old houses alongside of it, and one of the oldest—if not the oldest—chapel in the district stands on the side of the road nearly opposite Ty'n yr Rhyl. It. is also evident that the small collection of dwellings there was the commencement of the town, for between it and Foryd and the Iraeth," where now we have the Parade, Queen's Palace, Pier, etc., there were only a few fishermen's cottages.- I am, yours faithfully, Rhyl, Oct. 3rd. 1905. Rhyl Harvest Festival. The ingathering of the harvest has been appro- priately celebrated in Rhyl this week, yesterday being generally observed by church and chapel folks as a day of thanksgiving. The principal thanksgiving services in connec- tion with Christ Church (English Congregational) were held on Sunday, when large congregations listened to seasonable and stirring discourses by the pastor, Rev J Pandy Williams, who in the morning preached from the text Oue soweth and another reapeth," and at night eh ORe" Drifting" as his subject. The musical features included spirited renderings by the choir of the anthems 11 0 Lord, how manifold are Thy works" (Barnby) ind Lift up your heads" (Hopkins). The decora- tions usually associated with the harvest festival were introduced here after a lapse of some years, the work being tastefully carried out by Mrs J Pandy Williams, Mrs Wm Roberts, Mrs Williams Terfyn), Mrs A Rhydwen Jones, Mrs Richard Hughes, Mrs Godfrey Parry, Mrs Vernon, Mrs J White, Mrs Gray, Miss Maggie Jones, Miss Maud Jones, Miss Edith Roberts, Messrs F C and G E railby, Caradoc Williams, and others Embellished with a wealth of floral adornments Dd other products of the soil, the four churches under the charge of the Vicar of Rhyl (Rev. T. Lloyd) presented quite a festal appearance. The services in the churches included three celebrations, one at the Parish Chuich and two at St Thomas'. The morning service at the latter was well attended, when the Rev Canon Drew, Rector of Hawarden, delivered a thoughtful ser- mon. At the Welsh Church in the evening there was a large congregation, when the Rev Evan Davies, Rector of Llanllechid, delivered an elo- quent sermon. St John's also was well attended at its evening service, the sermon being delivered by the Rev Thos Redfern, vicar of Holy Trinity, Oswestry, and a well-known and able preacher. The singing in all the churches was very pood, though St Thomas' choir was by no means at its full strength. The offertories were for the Den- bigh Infirmary and the Royal Alexandra Hospital. The Welsh chapel services included an united meeting at Bethel C.M. Chapel on Wednesday night, and a series of united gatherings yesterday at Carmel Congregational, Water Street Baptist, Brunswick Wesleyan and Clwyd Street C.M. chapels, the respective ministers and the leading laymen of the ditferent congregations taking part. The collections were deyoted to the funds ot the British Schools. This was also the case with the collections made at the English chapel services, whieh were held yesterday at Christ Church and the Presbyterian Chapel. Both places were prettily decorated. The decorators at the former we have already enumerated, and at the latter the work was carried out by the young ladies of the congregation- q, numerous band, who did their work very creditably. The addreslI at the morning service was given by the Rev J Verrier Jones, and in the evening by the Rev J Pandy Williams. At St Mary's Mass was cele- arated at S a.m, and Father Swift preached at the evening service.

Rhuddlan Parish Council. MONTHLY MEETING. MR BELL S REPLY TO MR THOMAS HUGHES. MONDAY.—Present Messrs Win Morris (chair- man), Wm Jones (vice-chairman), W Conwy Bell, J.P., H Barnet% T Williams and H Edwarùs, with the Clerk (Mr Jas. Kilner). Absent Member's Motion. Mr Thomas Hughes had given notice of his intention" to call the attention of the Parish Council to the talk of W Gonwy Bell, Esq, and others at the St. Asaph Rural uistrict Council meeting, reported in the Rhyl Journal of Sep- tember loth, 190-> But he was not present to move in the matter, and indisposition was stated to be the cause of his absence. The "Journal" was, however, conspicuous by its presence, two or three members producing copies. The Chairman, having read the remarks referred to by Mr Hughes, left it to the meeting to decide what course should be taken. Mr Bell said he was very sorry that indisposi- tion prevented Mr Hughes' attendance. He could not understand the meaning of this questson. Personally he thought it should be treated with The Contempt it Deserved. If a man was not allowed to give expression to his own vie.vs—they lived in a free country-he did not know what they were coming to. He failed to see where exception could be taken to his remarks, reported in the Journal." He certainly made no remarks detrimental to the interests of the ratepayers. He repeated that he for one would not for a moment be responsible for the carrying out of any work that would entail any extra charge upon the parish if it could possibly be helped. It was only last week that he paid Mr Kilner the biggest cheque he probably ever received—considerably over .£ I O-for rates. Was he, therefore, as representing the largest vested interests in the parish, a likely one to chuck money away He had no doubt that one and all desired to see the sewerage scheme carried out in the most economical way consistent with efficiency. Was it not Mr Thos. Hughes who was recently advocating the laying of every pipe in concrete, notwithstanding that it was stipulated that con- crete should be used where necessary V To have done as Mr Hughes suggested—lay a length of nearly 1,900 yards of piping in concrete—would have entailed an extra cost of over £400. So much for the economic views of one of the smallest rate- payers in the parish. He could not understand why Mr Hughes should always be nagging at him. However, he was able to bear all this, and he should carry out his convictions to the end, tor what he was endeavouring conscientiously to do was in the best interests of the ratepayers. In the engineer supervising the sewerage works they had,a thoroughly good man, and he did not consider it was for them to dictate to him as some of them wanted to do. At the same time he agreed that the Parish Council should make it their business, if they did see anything amiss, to draw attention to it. At the last meeting of the Council a demand was made for a copy of the specifications, aud owing to the limited number he had placed his copy at the dis- posal of the Council. Although it had been in their Clerk's possession for more than a month, only two gentlemen in the whole parish had made any use of it, notwithstanding the fuss made about it. There seemed to be a great deal of outside interest in the > sewerage question, but No interest really at Heart. He was very much surprised indeed at the way in which Mr Hughes' notice was put down on the agenda. He regarded it as very unjust on the part of Mr Hughes to adopt such an attitude towards him. He had striven to do his best for the parish. At the same time he was not one to thro.v gold into the dustbin if he could save his coppers. As no member venture 1 to make any remarks, Mr Bell suggested that the matter should be closed. It was not fair, he said, to those who were looking after their interests to be harassed in that wav. Attendance at the Guardians' and District Council meetings by no means represented the time he put in on their behalf. The continual committee meetings had also to be taken into:account. He regretted exceedingly that neither of his two Rhuddlan colleagues on the Board of Guardians and Rural District Council had been to St Asaph for some time—(A Member: One for you, All Chairman)—with the result that he had had tc bear all these little pecks, and had had to look after everybody's interests himself. Concluding, Mr Bell intimated that his copy of the sewerage works specifications would still be available tc anyone who applied to the Clerk for it. After an almost embarrasing silence it was decided to close the matter, on the proposition oJ the Chairman, seconded by Air Barnett. The Embankment Trustees and their Responsibilities. A letter was read from Air Chas Grimsley, or behalf of the Rhuddlan Marsh Embankment Trustees, as follows :—"As far as it can be ascer tained the trustees have not hitherto erected 01 repared stiles aiong the cop, and I do not think they will undertake to do so. However, I will submit your letter to the trustees at their next meeting. As regards the repair of the embank- ment, a portion repairable by the trustees from Voryd to near Glanffyddion is receiving attention.

St. Asaph. Cathedral Service List. Offertory, Cathedral expenses. Death and Funeral of Mrs Watts, Bronwylfa. The sad news of the sudden death of the above well-known lady, the wife of Mr T B Watt3, came as a shock to the inhabitants on Friday morning last, at the age of 66 years. Mrs Watts was driving about in her carriage the previous day. The immediate cause of death was heart disease. The funeral, which was of a public character, took place on Monday at the Cathedral, and was very largely attended by the public generally. The officiating clergy were the Lord Bishop, Canon Fletcher and Vicar Herbert Evans. The service was fully choral, and the hymns On the resurrection morning and Now the labourer's task is o'er were solemnly sung in the sacred edifice, while the favourite old Welsh funeral hymn, Bydd myrdd o ryfeddodau," was sung by the graveside. The coffin, which was ot massive polished oak with brass mountings and inscription plate, was covered with beautiful and most costly wreaths. The undertaker, who also made the coflin, was Air J PMumford, who carried out his duties well. The equipages were supplied by Mr Oliver Jones, Bryndinas Alews. Several private carriages were also in attendance. Mrs Watts was a very faithful Churchwoman, and took a great interest in ail good work connected with the welfare of the city. Church Choir Trip. The annual trip in connection with the Parish Church choir took place on Saturday last. The collectors met with a very ready and liberal response from the Churchpeople, which enabled the members to have their fares paid to Liverpool and a handsome sum in their pockets. The majority of the members, after an inspection of the various places of amusement in the seaport city, had a sail to New Brighton to attend the Eisteddfod. All seemed to thoroughly enjoy thcinselve.-j, and returned home safely by the last train. Post Office. We would urge the public of the city to bear in mind that after the 10th of October the Post Office will be closed at 8 o'clock, and not at 8-30 as hitherto. Bible Society. The annual meeting in connection with the St Asaph Auxiliary Branch of the British and Foreign Bible Society was held at the National School on Monday last, when the Lord Bishop of the diocese presided. The Rev D Charles Edwards attended as a deputation from the parent society, and the other speakers were the Rev Canon Fletcher, Vicars Herbert Evans and D C Owen, Revs Jonathan Jones, W M Jones and B Evans, Rhuddlan. There was a large atten- dance, The sum of 1:35 was sent from this dis- trict as a free gift to the parent society. Sermons and Prayer Meetings. On Tuesday evening the Rev 0 Lloyd Owefi, Birkenhead, preached a powerful sermon to a large congregation at the Bethlehem Chapel. On Wed- nesday, at the C.M. Chapel, the Rev W J Nichol- son, Portmadoc, preached. Thursday was kept as a Harvest Home day by the Nonconformists, as follows :—Prayer meetings, at the Baptist Chapel at 7 a.m., Congregational at 10, Wesleyan at 2, and at the C.M. Chapel at 6, when a sermon was preached by the Rev W J Nicholson. The dis- courses of the last named minister were greatly appreciated, and the meetings were all largely attended. Mary Short's Fountain. The architect, Mr James Hughes, together with Ll1.01", .'1 ,¡: _t'\I..iU 1D1 1\11 'JiLli H.lt II i committee appointed by the Parish Council, 1 visited the Common on Tuesday, and selected a I site for the above, which will ha remove 1 at once. The plans were thoroughly approved of, and so was the location for the fountain, and as ] far as we learn, it will „not only be an ornament I but also an useful erection at the bottom of the city in the "Parish Park."

Rhyl Golf Club. AUTUMN MEETING. The autumn meeting was held last week and closed on Saturday afternoon. In the scratch tournament for club prizes (winner to hold the cup for I year) Mr F J F Baines was the winner, with Air H S Vina ng runner up. The homesters opened the score a;tr a teries of attacks, Love Jones doing the needful, and for soma time afterwards maintained the upper hand, despite determined effort) by Whitchurch. -k The second half ha 1 well advanced before another goal was registered, the visitors drawiug level with a line shot by the outside left. The point was well deserved, the visitor! having been pegging away hard for some time. A spell of even phy followed, and immediately before the call of time Whitchcrrch obtained the winning goal. The game was a somewhat disappointing one. A little less carelessness on the part of the homesters would doubt- less have given them the victory. Yet Whitchurch feared to meet Rhyl here in the next qualifying round of the English Cup competition, and scratched that engagement, with the result that a friendly" with Prestatyn has had to be arranged for patrons of the Belle Vue Athletic Grounds to-morrow.

( Saturday Night in Vale Road. TO TliE KDITOR OF THE ItHIL .LOUKNAT,. Sm,-I have before now, in company with many otherS —visitors and resitlent-i-lieard Mr E H Williams and his Merrie Men go through their Terrible Night" But never before in my life did I know from experience what a "terrible night" was till last Saturday night. I had often heard that Vale Road district on Saturday night was a veritable hell upon earth, and so I find it, as soon as the hour approaches for the closing of I public-houses. With your permission, Mr Editor, I will describe the scene of last Saturday. I noticed four police officers engaged in taking two' men into enstody, and whilst they were struggling with them one of the most notorious characters of our town de'iberately kicked one of the officers mentioned. P.C. Williams immediately followed this man, and secured him a few yards off. While the officer was endeavouring to take this man into castody a large crowd of ralrUns made for him not being satisfied with trying to kick him. a brick was thrown at the police officer, which, luckily, missed hi? head. Had the policeman not lowered his head he doubtless would have had a fatal blow. But if anyone had ottered to give any assistance, no doubt they would be marked, and have to softer in consequence. Now, what is the remedy for this S:1d stite of things. which is a disgrace to any locality ? A paltry fine has no effect whatever, neither has a few days' imprisonment in Ruthin gaol. Are our magistrates tied hand and foot from giving these Hooligans a more severe sentence.' It's anything but safe for people to walk the street on Saturday nights, in the Vale Road district, between 10.30 and 11 o clock. My opinion is that Rhyl is not sufficiently provided with police officers-four at least should he told off for N'ale Road and the chamber of horrors (Morfa Bach) alone. Some short time BILTO it was suggested that a library be provided for that part of our town but someone.who knew the requirements of the district said if a library were provided, the books would have to be chained! A lock-up would be more iu keeping with the locality.-Yours truly, OBSERVER.

Gwaenyscor. Harvest Festival. A harvest thanksgiving service was held in the Parish Church on Wednesday evening, September 20th. The icar of Bagilit was the preacher, (rifts of fruit, corn, and tJowors were sent by Mr Mortimer, Golden Grove; Mr Humphreys, The Gop; Mr Carroll, and Mr McDonald, Penywaen. The old church was nicely decorated by willing hands. The singing was very hearty, Mr Temple, Llanasn, presiding at the har- monium. Tte (,tl'crtory was in aid of the Diocesan Board of Education Fund.

Prestatyn, Rehoboth Chapel. The anniversaryjsermons in connection with this place of worship were preached on Saturday,! Sunday, and Monday, to large congregations. Stirring discourses were delivered by the Revs Thos Grey, Birkeuhead W R Owen, BetliesdtA and Ezra Jones, pastor. The Weather. Prestatyn has not been exempt from the rough weather which has so generally been experienced during the past few days, but happily little or no damage has resulted. Tha heavy seas, however, afforded a very impressive sight and attracted large crowds to the beach from day to day. The sand- hills to the right and left; of the town were at times very fiercely assailed, and in one or two instances considerably guawed away. The Aiston Cup. The Boxing Day competition which the Pres- tatyn F.C. proposes to hold has been sanctioned, and the cup, the gift of Mr Aiston, of Pierrot fame, is now on view in Mr Newton's shop window. The winners will also be presented with gold centred silver medals, and there will be another set of medals for the runners-up. Death. Aluch sympathy will be felt for iNI r-Tward Jones, grocer, High Street, in the bereavement he has sustained by the death of his wife at the com- paratively early -age of 38 years. She died on Sunday after a lingering illness very patiently borne ond was buried at Rhyl on Thursday. No Plaoe like Home. Evidently this is a true saying amongst the residents of Prestatyn, judging by the mere handful of persons who yesterday availed them- selves of the cheap bookings to Liverpool and other places. And it must have forced itself upon the two or three would-be excursionists who had the singular experience of watching the train for which they. had taken tickets rush through the station at full speed. Their disap- pointment was doubtless aggravated by th-j fact ¡ that just before they witnessed tht: flepMture of a train which would have served tUeic purpose quite as well. The business of the town was suspended for the day on acjount of the harvest festival.

Prestatyn Harvest Festival. The Parish Church and the Welsh Noncon- formist bodies yesterday celebrated the ingathering of the harvest by holding special services, which were on the whole well attended. The church was beautifully decorated with gifts cf flowers, fruit, corn &c., the ladies chiefly responsible being Miss Davies (Vicarage), Mrs John Williams, and the Misses Livesey, Howe, Lyne, Davies (Fern- bank), Jones (Croft), Linnell, Cunningham (3), Miller (2), Radley, and E Coward. At the English servico in the afternoon an eloquent sermon was preached by the Rev \V Vaughan Jones, vicar of Mostyn, and the preacher at evensong, which was conducted in Welsh, was the Rev Griffith Williams, vicar of Glan Couway. The offer- tories were devoted to the Diocesan Societies and the Clergy Sustentation Fund. United Noncon- formist thanksgiving services were held at Avenue and Towyn Chapels on Wednesday night, and successively at Horeb, Rehoboth, and Bethel Chapels yesterday, conducted by the respective ministers. The festival was observed at the English Presbyterian and Methodist New Con- nexion Chapels on Sunday.

Liberals and the Education Act. A Political Correspondent of the Liverpoo Courier writes: — I understand that quite a number of Liberals who stoutly opposed the education act when it was firiSt brought iorwaid have communicated to Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman the fact that hey are now as stoutly opposed to its repeal. They point out that the act is now in working order, and that a fatal mistake would be made if the whole education system were once again thrown into the melting pot. They are prepared to meet Dr. Clifford and his friends up to a certain point, but they will not countenance a re vivai of the religious controversy in an aspect t" bitter as would result from the attemps to initio ate non-sectarian instruction in all public elemen- tary school nor are they prepared to regenerate y I the ad hoc" bodies which formerly dealt with the question of public education.

Chapel on Wednesday night and yesterday, the Rev R Wlliams preaching an appro- priate sermon on Wednesday night. The Parish Church harvest festival will take place next Thursday, when, as peradvertisement, the Rev E M Richards, Rhyl, will preach in English in the afternoon and in Welsh at night.

TIT-BITS. THAT SETTLED IT. Not long ago a certain farmer closed a foot path across of his fields. This was reeentcfl by the inhabitants of the district, who claimed that a right of way existed. Eventually the matter came before tho court, and a decision was given in favour of the farmer. As the public still persisted in crossiag the field, however, the owner turned a furious bul! into it. After one or two daring spirits had beoöz¡ assisted out of the field over a hedge, a deputa- tion waited on the farmer and asked him, as a special favour, to withdraw the bull and allow the footpath. This the farmer might have done, had not one of the deputation unfortunately remarked as lIE was leaving— You know there is a right of way!" ENJOYING HIMSELF. A fond mother 6ent her small boy into the country, awl after a week of anxiety received the following letter: I got here all right, and I forgot to write before. It is a very nice place to have fun. A fellow and I went out in a boat, and the boat tipped over, and a man got me out, and I was 60 full of water that I didn't know nothing for a long while. The other boy has to be buried when they find him. His mother came from her home, and she cried all the time. A horse kicked me over, and I have got to have some money to pay the doctor for mending my head. It was broken a bit. We are going to eet an old barn on fire to- night, and I am not your son if I don't have some real fun. I lost my watch, and I am very sorry. I shall bring home some snakes and a toad and a tame crow if I can get 'em in my trunk."

An old^ bed-ridden fisherman at a Scotch tvatering-piace was frequently visited during his last illness by a kind-hearted clergyman, who wore one of tho«e close-fitting clerical waistcoats which button behind. The clergyman saw the near approach of death one day in the ohl man's face, and asked him if his mind was perfectly at ease. Oo, ay. I'm a' richt," came the feeble reply. The classes have again been com- menced,—the Science Class meeting at the County School on Wednesdays, at 6-3t) p.m., and the Mathematics Class at Christ Church Schools on Fridays at 6-15 p.m. County Court Brevities. Purgatory is not as remote or mysterious a place "as some people may think, judging by the address of one of the litigants in the Rhyl County Court last Friday, who came from some part of New. market bearing that designation. Another thing which the court learnt from a driver was that the season just ended had been a very poor one for tips in Rhyl. In another case the Judge was tempted to remark that it was characteristic of letters written by ladies that Lhey seldom bore dates. Much of the details of one ot the cases we would have preferred not publishing. But as the daily papers had already given the case much promin- ence, no good purpose would be attained by leav- ing them out. We are, however, confident that our readers' sympathy will be felt for the elderly lady defendant, and to whom the judge promptly gave a verdict. She and her gallant husband — the respected hero of our local patriotic gatherings —have lived many years in this town, and gained the esteem and respect of the community. Impudent Theft. At Rhyl Police Court on Monday, Pluenix Taylor, a travelling gipsy, pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing a bedroom hearthrug, valued at Is (id, the property of Frank Sarson, dentist, 32 Water St. Evidence was given to the effect that on Saturday morning prosecutor's daughter Julia threw the rug out of the bedroom window into the backyard for it to be shaken. No sooner did it reach the ground than defendant picked it uptnd cleared off with it, ignoring altogether the girl's calls to him to put it down. Mr Sarson said that had not the thing been done so impudently he might not have troubled to follow him up. How- ever, he hoped the Bench would be as lenient as possible towards him. Defendant, who maintained that he had no idea that the rug was of any use, was given the alternative of a tine of 2s 6d and 18s costs or seven days' imprisonment. Sir Horatio Lloyd. A Chester contemporary reminds us that it was Judge Sir Horatio Lloyd's birthday last Friday. As our columns prove, it was by no means a light day for his Honour. Truly we wish him "many happy returns." At the Butts. On Saturday last the shooting range at Voryd again re-sounded to the crack of the ritie, the occasion being the annual prize shooting meeting in connection with the Colwyn Bay company of the 2nd V.B. Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Denbighshire and Flintshire Agrioultural Society. The adjourned annual meeting of this society was held on Monday at Ruthin, Captain P T Davies-Cooke, Mold, presiding. A long discussion took place as to the desirability or otherwise of removing the secretary's office from Rhyl to Mold. It was eventually decided, on the proposition of Mr W Conwy Bell, Rhuddlan, that the office remain at Rhyl. It was decided to postpone the election of a president until the February meeting. Mr John Kelett, Plasnewydd, Llanfair, D.C., was appointed vice-president of the show this year. The Chairman called attention to the large amount of money standing to the credit of the society, and suggested that it should be utilised for the benefit of the members generally, either by pro- viding facilities for the improvement of horse breeding in the society s district, or in some other manner. He mentioned the fact with the view of haying it discussed at the January meeting. Welsh Wesleyanism. The Rev W 0 Evans, the new superintendent minister of the local Welsh Wesleyan circuit, presided over his first quarterly meeting last Friday. Encouraging reports, financial and otherwise, were presented, and the various officers were re-appointed. The treasurer and secretary of every church were appointed to receive subscrip- tions on behalf of the education revolt fund, and arrangements were also made for helping on the revival thanksgiving fund, in connection with which £ 131 was promised at last week's synod at Prestatyn. The Rev E Mostyn Jones was invited to succeed the Rev John Kelly at Prestatyn in 1907, and the Rev D Tryfan Jones, Manchester, was invited to succeed the Rev W 0 Evans at Rhyl in 1908. The tea which followed was pre- sided over by Mesdames W M Williams and M cyrick Jones. The Men's Home. The Duke of Westminster, already one of the regular subscribers to the Men's Convalescent Home at Rhyl, has this week given a special donation ot £ 50 towards the building fund, which stands in great need of replenishment. Outing. Through the kindness of their employers, the staff at the" Journal" works had their annual outing on Saturday last. The weather was all that could be desired, and a most enjoyable day was spent in Liverpool and district. Pleasant Saturday Evenings. Councillor i. Lewis Jones, secretary of the J'leasant Saturday Evenings, has convened a meet- ing of all interested in the movement, to be held in the Council Chamber at the Town Hall next Friday evening at 7 o'clock. We trust Mr Jones will have a good rally, as we feel sure an early start with these week-end entertainment will be appreciated. St. Asaph County Court. All summonses against persons residing out of the district for the next court, to be held at St Asaph on the 27th inst, must be entered not later than the 7th, and those against persons residing in the district not later than Tuesday, the 10th. The Encroaching Sea. The effect of the past week's storms has been severely felt along the seaboard on either side of the Rhyl sea defences, which have themselves stood the strain well. Further havoc has been wroueht upon the disappearing embankment near Foryd Railway Station, and the railway authorities have had to keep a sharp look-out upon their own defence works, which, however, have so far offered the most satisfactory resistance. An equally strong sea wall will have to be erected along the line on the Prestatyn side of the town if the demolition of the sandhills is allowed to proceed much further. Inland little or no damage appears to have been I done. j > Settled out of Court. It will be remembered that at the July County Court at Rhyl Mrs Mary Citneron, 43 West Parade, sued the L & N \V Railway for £4 13s for damage to furniture in transit from Manchester to Rhyl. Bu, Mr Fenna, for the defence, success- fully raised, at the last minute, the contention that the action should have been brought against the Manchester South Junction and Altrincham Railway Company. Mrs Cameron afterward-! entered her claim against the Manchester company, and a few days prior to last week's court the company offered her ;C4 10 in settlement, which she accepted. English Presbyterians. On Wedni-eday evening, a social gathering, arranged by the pistor and [officers of the Eng- lish Piesbyt-rian Church for the < burch members and adult members of the congregation, was held in Princes Street Schoolroom. There was a large attendance, and an opportunity was afforded for discussing in a homely manner the church's winter work. Tea was provided, the various tables being presided over by Mrs J Verrier Jones (wife of the pastoi). Mrs Jacob Jones, Mrs Mill- ward, Mrs T Griffiths, and Mrs Edwin Jones, assisted by other ladies. A comprehensive pro- gramme was drawn up, the fixtures including a public tea and concert, which a committee, under the chairmanship and vice-chairmanship re- sdectively of Mr W Bridge Williams and Mr E Lewis Evan, with Mr E Parker Davies as secretary, has uudertakeu to arrange. One of the first fixtures of the Literary Society's session will be a debate on the Anglo-Japanese Treaty, led by Mr E Parker Davies and Mr H Millward. This takes place on Monday evening next Wedding. The marriage of Miss Bertha Annie Clarke, eldest daughter of our respected townsman, Mr Walter Clarke, and Mr Wm Mival, of Glanrafon, Rhuddlan, son of Mr Wm Mival, Church Stretton, was quietly solemnised at Rhuddlan Parish Church yesterday, the Rev T W Vaughan officiating. The bride, who was becomingly attired in a grey travelling costume and a white beaver hat, and carried an ivory bound Prayer Book, the gift of the bridegroom, was given away by her father, and was attended by her sister, Miss Nellie Clarke, as bridesmaid. The duties of best man were dis- charged by the bridegroom's friend and namesake, Mr Chas Clarke, Glanrafon. A reception was afterwards held at 24 Crescent Road, Rhyl, the residence of the bride's parents, where a numerous company was very hospitably entertained. Besides the host and hostess there were also present The Rev T W Vaughan, Mr and Mrs Maxwell, Mr and Mrs Evans, Mr E W Crapper (Sheffield), Mr C Clarke, Mrs Maltby, Miss N Clarke, Mr E R Clarke, Miss Clare, Miss J Mival, Miss P Mival, Miss J Mahen, Miss M Mahen. Miss L Ellis, &c., &c. An excellent luncheon was followed by a brief toast list, in the course of which Mr Vaughan proposed in very happy terms the health of the bride and bridegroom, the bridegroom responding Mr Crapper proposed the health of the bridesmaid and the best man, Mr Chas Clarke responding aid Mr Maxwell;submitted the toast of the bride's parents, which was acknowledged by Mr Walter Clarke. In the afternoon the newly married couple departed upon a tour through North Wales. The wedding presents were nu- merous and formed a very costly collection. Royal Alexandra Hospital. In response to the offer made by two friends of the Hospital, of giving £100 and 9,50 towards the debt on the building, if nine similar sums were promised, a cheque for £ 150 has been received this week from "South Wales," and is very gratefully acknowledged. The second of the collecting boxes undertaken by the New Century Company at the Bijou Pavilion has been sent in containing the sum fi 23 9d. This box was in the charge of Mrs Davey, who is to be congratulated on the success of her kind efforts on behalf of the Hospital. Death of Mrs Nicholson. The sorrowful announcement reaches us that Mra Nicholson, of Nithsdale, passed peacefully away yesterday morning. She had attained a ripe age, and had been ailing for some time, though able to get out of doors till a week or two ago. She was the widow of Mr B J Nicholson, a director of the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway, who predeceased her several years ago. She was a staunch and generous Churchwoman, and her bene- factions to various causes in the town and district were very considerable. It will be remembered that it was she who built and endowed St Ann's Church. The Archdruld. We regret to inform our readers that throughout the week there has been no improvement in Hwfa Mon's condition, which is still very grave. Last night he was very restless. Yesterday's Exodus. Vesterday was a general holiday throughout the town, on account of the harvest festival, and as in former years, several persons took advantage of the cheap bookings to Liverpool and elsewhere. About 250 spent the day at Liverpool, and about 40 availed themselves of the bookings to Man- chester, Birmingham and Chester. Animated Pictures. The continuance of the New Century Animated Pictures after every other form of entertainment has come to end is a matter for which the local public should feel very grateful to Mr Carter. Excellent entertainments have this week been given in the pavilion at the entrance to the pier, where Mr Carter hopes to have a further success- ful run.

Bangor Bankruptcy Court. YESTERDAY. Ambrose Crampton, about '1899, came from London, where he had been apprenticed as painter and decorator, to Rhyl, and started a business of his own without any capital. Five years ago, with a capital of about 930, he added the business of a greengrocer and fruiterer. Yesterday he appeared in the Bank- ruptcy Court with gross liabilities amounting to JE210 and a deficiency of JE29, a state of affairs which he attributed to family illness, loss of paint- ing contracts, and bad trade in greengrocery. The examination was closed. Ernest Lloyd Williams, a builder and con- tractor, Rhyl, was next examined. His liabilities were returnsd at 91,495, and he said his failure was due to building houses with insufficient capital and losses on contracts. He began business about 12 yaars ago with. a capital of £ 2b. He estimated that there ought to be a surplus on the realisation of his estate of £137, as he put the value of his securities at £ 1,450 to set against £1,312 due to three fully-secured creditors. He had made a deed of gift of the furniture to his wife about six weeks ago. Asked why, he said he did it against his own will to please hie wife, who wanted him to secure the furniture for her. The examination was closed.
