--Sectarianism on the Rates.
Sectarianism on the Rates. Mr J Allanson Picton is a member of the Car- narvonshire Education Committee, and is a Radical and Nonconformist. He has written as follows to a contemporary Mr. J Hirst Hollowell's thoroughly sound doctrine on the subject of rates aud taxes revive." a wish I have often felt that he would give a equally sound exposition of sectariadism. i, He says the Nonconformists absolutely refuse tj charge their sectarianism upon the rates and taxes." Here of course all depends on what is meant by sectarian isin." I have always suppos ed it to mean the holding of religious views ap- proved by a part and not by the whole of the nation. In this sense, of course, Anglicans and Roman Catholics would be sectarians, though I know they do not like the name. But ill thi, sense Mr. Hirst Hollowell's "simple" Bible teach- ing" must also be sectarian, becauso to a rapidly increasing number of population it is repulsive. Mr. Hollowell would have the Bible taught as "the Word of Uod." But large numbers do not so regard it. It will not do in these times, to say negligible minority," and rule tbem out of consideration. They are too many to be so treat- ed now. In relation to them, to Unitarians, and to consistent latitudinarians, even in the Church itself, the simple Bible teaching" of the Non- conformists is distinctly sectarian. And it is, therefore, scarcely fair to say that "they absolute- ly refuse to charge their sectarianism upon the rates and taxes.

AT a meeting held at the Council Chamber, on Monday, Sept 11, it was ullanilllouly decided to open a subscription list with the object of pre- senting Mr P. J. Ashfield with some suitable token in recognition of his many public services to Hhyl. Ever since he it as taken up his residence in Hliyl, Mr Ashfield has throw. himself licartily into the public life of the town, lie did particu- larly useful work as Chairman for three yean. of the Rhyl Town Improvement and Advertising Association, and has perhaps done more than any- one else to bring the advantages of Rhyl before the touring public, a work which he also intends to take up again. On the occasion of the Royal Visit to Hhyl, and the holding of the National Eisteddfod, he held Secretarial positions enf ailing much labour and time, which he gave unstintingly. For several years he has been the leading organizer of the Rhyl May Day Demonstration, and he has repeatedly arranged and promoted concerts and entertainments for the assistance of charitable, educational and philanthropic objects. In fact, every public movement involving hard personal work has found in Mr Ashfield its best supporter. There is a strong feeling that these and other public services should be recognised in some substantial form, and the undersigned were appointed to issue an appeal for subscriptions. There will be no systematic collection, as it is hoped the subscriptions will flow in perfectly spontaneously. The list will be closed on October 21st. Subscriptions may be sent to either of the undersigned, or paid into one of the local Banks. Soliciting your early and favourable response, We are, Yours faithfully, W. JONES, Chairman & Hon.
