< St Asaph and Rhuddlan Revision Courts. The Hon R C Grosvenor held courts yesterday at St ABaph and Rhuddlan for the purpose ot revising the lists of voters. The Conservatives were re presented at buth places by Mr H A Tilby, while the Liberals were represented at St Asaph by Mr Morgan and at Rhuddlan by Mr P Mostyn Williams.. A St Asaph man named Divies claimed a vote in respect to the schoolmistress' house, and in reply to Mr Tilby, who objected, stated that he lived in the house for services rendered to the schoolmistress. Replying to Mr Tilby,who held that the schoolmistress was both landlady and tenant, Mr Morgan contended that she had sublet the hovse to the applicant. The Revising Barrister main- tained that the claimaut could be nothing more thsn a lodger, and if he wanted a vote he should have applied for one as such. A question arose as to the name of Mr E H Jones on Division 1 of the St. Asaph list, Mr Xilby pointing out that in .ill the advertisements relating to Mr Jones' business the tirm was styled E B Jones, and Co. The Revising Barrister said a man could call himself anything he liked so long as he did not put "Limited" after his name. There was no proof that anybody else was concerned in the matter, and the vote was allowed. A platelayer living at Waen claimed a lodger vote in respect to two rooms occupied at £10 by him in his father's house. After hearing the pros and cons the Revising Barrister observed that the claim was a ridiculous one, as the whole house was rated at only X3 10s per annum. At the Rhuddlan Court, Mr Mostyn Williams, speaking in support of a claim by the Rev D G Lewis, fcaid that last year the applicant figurod on the list as tenant of a house owned by his wife. 4 The Revising Barrister said that as the wife occu- pied the house, and it also belonged to her, how could the applicant claim a tenant's vote ? The claim must fail.

Flintshire Revision Courts. The revision of the voters' lists in Flintshire was commenced on Saturday, courts being held in the morning at Overton and in the afternoon ( at Caergwrle. At the latter place the Hon R C Grosvcnor was the revising barrister. Mr H A Tilby, of Rhyl, represented the Conserva- tives, and Mr John Morgan, of Mold, Liberals. A (ILiestiou arose regarding a claim for a J I Genera! Owen Williams to be placed on the list. Mr Tilby said he made the claim on instructions from Berkshire. The Revising Barrister said he was perfectly certain that the General Williams referred to was dead. Mr Tilby said he had written to the address given and was expecting an answer by any post. Mr Morgan pointed out there was another name on the list, which evidently referred to the General's father, and the latter had been dead for about ::0 years. The Revising Barrister said he ;vould strike off the name of the General's father. As regards the claim on behalf of General Williams, he would leave the matter open until Mr Tilby received a reply. f The Liberal agent objected to the retention on the list of the name of a member of the Bar, of London, on the ground he had seen his death announced in the papers. The Assistant Over- seer He is my landlord, and 1 have not heard that he is dead. Mr Morgan stated e had written to the address given, but had received no reply. The Revising Barrister thought they might leave the name on for another year.

Cefn, St Asaph. Annual Treat. I The Sunday scholars and choirs of St Mary's and All Saints' had their annual treat on Saturday JL last at Rhyl. The members, to the number of ft, about 130, were conveyed there aod back by road. Abergele Police Court, Saturday.—Before Mr J D Miller and Dr. Wolstenholme. A Batch of Beggars. William Field, coppersmith, late of Ports- mouth, was sentenced gto seven days' hard labour for begging at Abergcle the previous day. P.C. Rowlands proved seeing defendant stop several people and solicit alms with his cap in his hand. George White, labourer, of Oxford, and John Birks, labourer, late of Bristol, were charged by the same oiheer with a similar offence, but they pleaded not guilty. P.C. Rowlands' ver- sion of the case was that they were begging bread from various shops in the to.vn. Defen- dants contended they were only enquiring for an old tin to make some tea. This explanation did not, however, get them off, for they were both sentenced to four d. s' hard labour. lVj.i). itit)AY. --Before Mr J D Miller and Dr Peter Jones. Cool Theft from a Butcher's Shop. George Smith, labourer, late of Liverpool, pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing a shoulder of mutton from the shop of JohnVj Owen, butcher, Bridge Street, the previous day. After evidence by prosecutor and his wife, defendant coolly remarked that he went into the shop with the intention of making a pur- chase, but nobody being there he laid hands on the joint in question and walked off. In default of a tine of 5s and £1 costs, defendant went to prison for fourteen days.

Rhuddlan. Thanksgiving Services. The thanksgiving services for the harvest were held in this parish on Wednesday last. All the places of business were closed and work was at a standstill. The services in the Parish Church were as follows :-10 a.m., Holy Communion 3-15 p.m., English service and sermon by the Rev W T Williams, M.A., rector of Llandyrnog. The anthem, All Thy works shall praise Thee," by Caleb Simper, was well rendered bv a full choir, and there were special hymns and psalms. A Welsh service was held at 7 p.m., the preacher being the Rev Win. Jones, rector of Brynford. The anthem, 0 Arglydd mor lliosog yn Dy weithredoedd Di," by J Barnby, was excellently sung, under the con- ductorship of Mr Edward Evans, choirmaster. Mr Thos. Davies ably presided at the organ at all the services. The offertories were for the Denbighshire Infirmary and the insurance of the church fabric. The decorations were beau- tiful and in very good taste. The east end was decorated by Mrs Vaughan and the Misses Vaughan (Vicarage), Mrs Metcalfe Sharpe, and Mr Robt Hughes. The pulpit by Mrs R Cobden Thompson (Castle View), assisted by MissBrereton and Miss Agnes Williams. The font and window above by Mrs Conwy Bell, Miss Dawson, and Master Allen Bell (Brynflynnon). East window, in south aisle, by Miss Enyon (Hylas). South-east window by Miss Brereton (Pontfaen), and Miss M J Hughes (High Street). South windows by Mr Robt Evans, junr., and Mr Peploe. North win- dows and choir stalls by Miss Edith Davies (High Street) and Miss M A Thomas. Lamp standards. Mr Robt Evans, junr. Flowers, fruit, corn etc., were sent by Mrs Rowley Conwy, Mr Tir. Maxwell, Miss Roberts (Abbay House), Mr H Barnett, Mr Williams (1'enyfVordd), Mrs Payne (Cwybr Ucha), Mr R C Enyon, and by those who took part in the decorations.— Services were held by the Nonconformists, com- mencing at the Wesleyan Chapel on Tuesday night. On Wednesday evening a sermon was preached by the Rev Thos Frimstoa, Old Colwyn, and a native of Rhuddla.

Fli nt. The Free Library. There were 215 books issued in the lending department and 273 in the reference during August, there being 3% readers' tickets in force. Many excellent books do not appear to have been read at, all. particularly "The Story of the Nations Series," the books in the fiction department appearing to have been mostly in use.

Sealand. Important Sale. On Saturday, at Chester, Messrs Cunnah and Roberts put up for auction a large agricultural estate of upwards of 1,321 acres in Sealand, Flint- shire. The farm, kliown as "The Wood," con- taining UJ6,\ 3r lp was offered, and when £ 9,050 was reached Mr Arthur Bulley became the buyer. "Ferry Bank Farm," 174a, or, 7p., was put up at £ 5,000, and when £ 6,009 was bid it was declared an open sale. At a further bid of jMO the tenant, Mr W H Fox, secured this lot amid the applaus3 of the company. Waterloo Farm," containing 98a, lr, 4p., started at £ 2,500, and fell to the bid of Sam Smith at £ 2,900. The small farm known as The Smithy," containing 8a, 2r, 25p., realised £705, Mr Robert Foulkes being the buyer, and Mr Fox purchased two cottages for £ 225. The total amount realised for the lots that changed hands was £ 18,930. 77-

St. Asaph. The Late Mr Thomas Hughes. The funeral of the late Mr Thomas Hughes, o the Swan Inn, took place last Friday, when the remains were conveyed by road to Rhyl for inter- ment in the Church Cemetery, Dyserth Road. The interment was witnessed by several relatives and friends, including many of deceased's old Rhyl associates, he having been for about twenty years a faithful servant of Messrs Williams, Alexandra Hotel, who kindly provided the con- veyances for the funeral. Nature Notes. Mr H E Forrest, write3 in the Oswestry Ad- vertiser —I was at St Asaph on September 3rd and saw several willow wrens ;they were on a yew hedge n a garden, clambering about in search of insects much after the manner of a tomtit. 1 noticed a solitary wheatear on a railway embank- ment. Mr W A Rogers, St Asaph, tells me that he heard turtle doves cooing there up to Aug. 30th —a very late date. The following amusing inci- dent was recently witnessed by Mr J 1' Lewis, St Asaph. As he was sitting in the garden a house sparrow tlew at a cabbage butterfly and tried to catch it, but the irregular fluttering motion of the insect entirely battled it just then down came a spotted flycatcher and with one graceful swoop picked up the butterfly whilst still on the wing seeing this the angry and disappointed sparrow dashed at the flycatcher, forced it to give lip its prey, and devoured it himself Accident. Whilst driving in the direction of Trefnant the other day a St Asaph party collided with a motor car driven in the opposite direction. Both vehicles were badly damaged, one of the horses at- tached to the St Asaph carriage being so seriously injured that it had, we understand, to be destroyed. Prestatyn. Football. I Though the Prestatyn Football Club has not yet been actively engaged this season, its arrangements are quite complete, and a good run is confidently looked forwards to several promising players being available as well as some old "standards." The first match in which the club will be engaged will be against Flint United on the 23rd inst, the same being a league encounter. Cymnastics. During the past few months the wide-awake residents of the town have been making various praiseworty efforts to enhance its popularity, notably in the direction of providing increased means of recreation. The latest institution is a gymnasium, which has the old Board School for its headquarters. Arrangements are being made to carry out an attractive winter programme, the officials of the committee in charge including Mr Clement Hughes, chairman Mr R H Hughes, trea- surer and Mr L W Watts, secretary. Early Closing. A deep fteling of resentment appears to have been roused by the action of certain shopkeepers in re-establishing the weekly half-holiday last Thursday at only a few hours' notice. If the tradespeople of Prestatyn can afford to act so independently, well and good. But such a want of consideration for the general public, especially the visiting population, is a sure way of injuring the town rather than enhancing its popularity. Early closing in the monthf of September is not as a rule the practice of those resorts where the aim of the residents is to prolong the the season as much as possible. The public are at any rate entitled to fair warning of any change in the hours of shopping. Left in the Lurch. A few nights ago a peculiar and somewhat amusing incident occurred at Prestatyn Railway Station. Considerable time having been spent in making up a goods train, it was started on its journey. But imagine the surprise of the brakes- man, when after a patient wait inside his van he discovered that he had been left behind. Wanted, a Pier. In the opinion of many people the time is ripe for the erection of a pier at Prestatyn, and it is suggestsd that an enterprising syndicate seeking new pastures might with advantage to both itself and the town undertake such a project. The idea that a pier is the main secret of a seaside town's success is a very popular one. Be thit so or not, Prestatyn seems a very desirable place for such a structure, and the townspeople would do well to keep the matter to tho front.

Colwyn Bay. Holiday Re-arrangements. The Colwyn Bay Council hay passed a resolution asking school authorities to start summer holidays a month earlier than is done at p esent, so as to prevent overcrowding in August. Mr Bevan did not think they would do so, and added that in these days the schoolmaster had been elevated to the position of a god—he tyrannised Parliament, ruled the county councils, and governed the public holi- days in a way which he believed it would be hope- less to try to alter.

Dyserth. Harvest Festival. On the occasion of the harvest festival in this parish on Tuesday next, the Rev J Hilaa Evaus, of Gyffylhog, and formerly of Dyserth, will occupy the pulpit of the Parish Church, preaching in, English in the afternoon tuid in Welsh at night

Early Closing of Shops. COMPULSORY POWERS FOR RHYL. At a County Council committee meeting a petition was received ill favour oi closing shops at earlier hours at Rbyl. under the Shop Hours Act, 1904, daring the six winter months at 7 and during the other months at S. the closing on Saturdays to be lit 9 and 10, and on Thursdays at 1 and5. The petitioners were 3t) tradesmon, com- prising drapers, milliners, ironmongers, clothiers, tailors, hosiers, furnishers, and boot retailers, and the order would aifsct those trades only. About I tradesmen of the above-mentioned classes had declined to sign. The committee recommended the Council to grant the Closing Order, and that was done at Wednesday's meeting. The fines will be Xl for the first offence, X5 for the second and X20 for the third and subsequent. A similar petition in Prestalyu was not granted, as there way a uuincrouslj, signed petitiou against it.
