THE COUNCIL ELECTION. Next Monday week the ratepayers of Rhyl will be called upon to choose whom they will have to serve them on the Urban District Council for the next three years, and again we would draw attention to the names of those who will definitely test the feelings of the electors in the tbree ward?, in which contests are now certain to take place. J Since last week the number ot candidates has been considerably reduced. The most notable withdrawal is doubtless that of Dr Girdlestone, the present vice-chairman of the Council. Mr Robert Flint, of the Lorne Hotel, and Mr H E Pope, of Crescent j Road, have also withdrawn their candi- dature for the West Ward, with the result ] tba"; there will be a sharp fight between Mr J H Ellis, the present chairman of the Road J Committee, Mr Edmund Hughes, who made a a plucky and an almost successful fight last i year, and Mr Robert Oldfield, who, although [ not at present a member of the Council, is 1 by no means unacquainted with the administrative work of the town. i Past services form a poor reed upon which to place reliance at election times. It cannot be denied, however, that Mr Ellis, though be has not perhaps shown that regard for the town's financial position which many rate- payers very properly maintain he as well as other@ ought to have evinced, has given ungrudgingly of his time to the Council, as n L, ifl proved by his excellent record of attend- iI ances at general and committee meetings— 130 out of 163. It is well known that Mr Ellis' colleague, Dr Girdlestone, has not of late been in the best of health, and doubtlees that is the reason of his withdrawal, his J attendances during the past year numbering | only 60 out of a possible 188. It is to be regretted that Dr Girdlestone did not earlier announce he had no intention of standing again. The knowledge of that fact would have brought out at least one other excellent candidate for the seat, but who did not wish to "oppose the old members." We think that all aspirants should in the future, in view of such a contingency as this, make sure of their nominations in the absence ot timely and definite announcements by the old members. Mr Ellis will probably get a fright at the poll, and in the event of his return it is to be hoped it will have a whole- some effect upon his future actions on the i Council, from which after all he can ill te spared. Messrs Hughes and Oldfield are a pair of formidable rivals, either of whom, we believe, would prove a u&eful member of the Council. To the former at anyrate the needs of this particular ward are well known, and carefully studied by him. Mr H Percival Williams, who is challeng- ing the retiring members for the South Ward. aas issued a very sensible address. His appearance on the scene will doubtless be welcomed by many, but his success would mean the ousting of one of the two members who have for a long time enjoyed the confidence of the ratepayers in that part of the town. Both Mr J S Greenhalgh and Mr A. Maltby have again made strong appeals to their constituents. Mr Greenhalgh stands lowest in the attendance returns issued last week by the Town Clerk, his re- cord being 14 general meetings out of a possible 20 and 13 committee meetings out of a possible 79. It is but fair to add that Mr Greenhalgh's health has been far from satisfactory for some time past. Under more favourable conditions in previous years he has been a most diligent representative. From a health point of view Mr Maltby cannot claim to have been much better off than his colleague, but for all that his attend- ance record-122 meetings out of a possible 181-is a creditable one, and ought to stand him in good stead in the coming contest. In the East Ward the contest promises to be particularly keen, the four candidates for the two seats all being substantial, sen- sible ratepayers. Mr T D Jones seeks re-election with a record for the past year of 111 attendances out of 141 and Mr Winterbottom, who, unfortunately, is still confined to his bed by illness, and is unable therefore to make a personal appeal to the electors, attended 12 out of the 13 Council meetings he was summoned to, and 47 committee meetings, since his election less than ten months ago. Handicapped as Mr Winterbottom is, we can say this much for him, that during his short acquaintance with the Council he has shown independence in forming his own opinions, and proved his courage in .giving expression to them. He has not been r. member of the showy kind, who would say one thing to-day and go back on it to- morrow. Mr D Trehearn has also an eye to one of the seats in the East Ward, and, as a glance at his address will show, he possesses qualities which make him an ideal candi- date. He bad many years' experience fin the old Board of Commissioners. The other aspirant to Council honours is Mr P J Ashfield, whose views also deserve the greatest consideration. In connection with town affairs already Mr P J Ashfield has manifested untiring zeal and proved himself a man of tact. These qualities, combined with is advocacy of true economy, are by no means common amongst members of the Council, and if it is the rate- payers' opinion that it is time a little new blood was infused into the Council, then Mr Ashfield ought to prove a very acceptable candidate. The electors of the East Ward certainly have the most difficult choice, but taking the whole district into consideration, it is pleasing to find that there are so many of our townsmen—men of business capacity —animated by a desire to assist in bearing n the heat and burden of the day when to anchor in retirement would appear just now to be far more preferable.

ROBERTS.—At 58 Mount Pleasant, Millbank, Rhyl, on the 25th inst, after but a few hours' illness, in her 66 th year, Margaret, the beloved wife of Robert Roberts, inspector to the Rhuddlan Marsh Embankment Trustees. The funeral will take place at 3 o'clock to morrow (Saturday). KIRTLA-ID.-On the 24th instant, at Willoughby House, Queen Street, after a few days' illness, in her 13th year, Hilda, the fondly loved and only daughter of Charles and Elizabeth Kirtland. Mr and Mrs Kirtland and son desire to express their sincere thanks to their many friends for kind sympathy in their great sorrow. March 14, at High Street, Rhuddlan, Hilda May Griffiths, aged 11 months. March 16, at Tanyrallt, Meliden, Philip Owen, aged 59 years. Late Football. Rhyl Coanty School v. Epworth College. The above match was played on the School ground on Saturday, March 21st. The previous match had resulted in a win for theSchool by :i-o, Both teams were strongly represented, and it was a toss-up who would win. Epworth kicked off against the wind and soon showed thev meant busi- ness. The School defence during this half was better than the attack. Time after time openings were missed, corners falling in abundance, not one of which could be converted. Epworth rushed up once or twice and before the interval they had scored one goal. Half-time, Epworth, 1-0. The prospects were not very bright for the school. with the wind against them. However, the match was not yet lost, and everyone now made up for his former play. The Epworth goal was hard pressed, but for the time there was no score. The School defence was on all but one occasion impregnable. After a quarter of an hour's play the home forwards broke away and their centre scored. ithin a few minutes Russell Jones gave his side the lead. There were now hopes of a win, but these were blighted when Epworth scored their second goal. The School defence was good throughout the game, whilst only during the second half did the forwards show any form at all. R.C.S. Team Goal, Morris; backs, Robin- son, Cecil Jones halves, Williams, Davies, J W Jones forwards, Everatt, Elwyn, W H Jones, Russell Jones, Lunt. St. Ann's v. St. John's. The return match between the above clubs was played on the Athletic ground yesterday. St John's won the toss, and at half-time were leading by a goal to nil. In the second half St Ann's livened up and scored four goals. I St John's added another to their score, and the I, game ended—St Ann's 4, St John's 2. i

EVERY WARD TO BE CONTESTED. That there is to be a contest in every ward in connection with the election of six Urban District Councillors for Rhyl is now a matter of certainty. Of the five candidates nominated to contest the two seats in the East Ward only one has withdrawn, Mr James Evans, brewer's agent, of Plas Glan y Don, Wellington Road. In the West Ward, where six candidates were put forward for the two seats, there have been three withdrawals, namely Dr Girdlestone, vice-chair- man of the Council; Mr Robert Flint, ot the Lorne Hotel and Mr Henry Ebenezer Pope. accountant, 3 Crescent Road. There has been no withdrawal of candidature for the South Ward, for which three gentlemen (including the retiring members) were nominated. THE ABERGELE AND PENSARN WARDS TO BE CONTESTED. Saturday, April 4, is the date fixed for polling in connection with the election of Urban District Councillors for Abergele and Pensarn. Of the nine candidates nominated for four seats only two have withdrawn, leaving four candidates for Abergele Ward and three candidates for Pensarn Ward. Mr George Perkins, who is One of the retiring members for Pensarn, has decided to seek re- election in the Abergele Ward, although he was nominated again for Pensarn. Mr John Edwards, of Tan y Fron, has declined to contest the Aber- gele Ward, for which he was nominated, so that the electors have now to decide between the following:— Abergele Ward. Prestatyn. GREAT CLEARANCE SALE.—All those who have up to the present been unable to gain admission to the Central Buildings, High Street, Rhyl, had better hurry up before all the stock is cleared. 'Messrs W S Wiliiams & Co. are continuing the sale another week. There are bargains in the drapery, clothing, and furn'shing giods lines that should not be missed. :MEssrs Williams & Co. are making a feature of men's and youths' clothing. Up to now there have been record attendances of purchasers. Jumble Sale. To raise funds for putting the old National School in order a jumble sale was held in that building last Saturday afternoon, when great assistance was rendered by the following :—The Vicar and Miss Davies, Mrs Coward, Mrs Gratton, Mrs Jones (Freelands), Mrs Parry Jones, Mrs Linnell, Mrs Morgan, Mrs Ssott, Mrs Tickle, Mrs and Miss Wimberley, the Misses Hughes, Livesey, Lyne, and Warfolk, Mr E H Parry, and others. The sale was well patronised and an extensive variety of goods disposed of. The promoters intend holding a similar sale to-morrow (Saturday) week, the proceeds to be again devoted to the school renovation fund. Temperance Meeting. The monthly meeting in connection with the local branch of the C.E.T.S. took place in the National School last night, under the presidency of the Rev 0 J Davies. The Rev James Davies, of Liverpool, was announced as the chief speaker. Lenten Services. The Lenten sermons in connection with the Parish Church were this week delivered by the Rev J H Astley, of Colwyn Bay (who preached in English on Wednesday evening), and the Rev James Davies, of Liverpool (who preached last night in Welsh). The Fire Brigade. The first of what is hoped will be a series of annual events in connection with the Prestatyn Fire Brigade took place last Friday evening, namely, a dinner, which was partaken of by a good company at The Croft, Miss Higgins' catering being all that could be desired. The chair was occupied by Mr J B Linnell, chairman of the Urban District Council, and others present included Mr W Conwy Bell, chief officer of the Rhuddlan Fire Brigade Lieutenants J 0 Hughes and J Oldfield, also of the Rhuddlan Brigade, Mr Hughes also being present as secretary of the North Wales branch of the National Fire Brigades' Union Mr W Thomas, chief officer of the Prestatyn Brigade; and Mr W H Harrop, first lieutenant and secretary. A musical evening, with toasts at intervals, followed the dinner. The toast of the evening, "Success to the Prestatyn Fire Brigade," was proposed by Mr Bell, and suit- ably acknowledged by Mr Thomas, whose remarks were supplemented by a report by Mr Harrop. This was to the effect that the Brigade was in an efficient state, and that though there had been occasion for the dismissal of two or three members their places had been readily filled up by others. The weekly drills were well attended, the average beiner twelve. The healths of the visitors and nf the Chairman and his family were also enthusias- tically toasted. Songs were contributed by Messrs Oldfield, A L Jones, Edward Jones, and others, Mr A L Jones also giving a number of gramophone selections.—On the following day the Brigade turned out for drill, and in connection therewith a one-man competition was held, as a result of which Fireman Robert Williams secured first place, his performance being considered very creditable.

Rhuddlan. New Station Master. This week a change has been made in the station staff, Mr J T Williams, of Eyarth, near Ruthin, being appointed station master at Rhudd- lan, while Mr R T Roberts, of Rhuddlan, has been placed in charge of Eyarth station. Poor Relief Fund. Last November a very successful farce The Rough Diamond" was played at the Reading Room in aid of the above. Miss Walmesley, Marian Villas, took great interest in the company, and coached them most successfully. Below will be seen a balance sheet showing the result, and there is still in hand a balance of iCt 8s 4d, which Miss Walmesley has very kindly made up to El 10s. Owing to the very sad bereavement which has befallen that ladv. Miss WalmRslpv is leaviog Rhuddlan, and it has been decided to dispose of the balance of 30s, the distribution being undertaken by Miss Walmesley. Miss Walmesley has the sincere sympathy of the whole of Rhuddlan, as she was untiring in her efforts to do good, particularly to alleviate the sufferings of the poor and needy, and she will be sadly missed. What will be Rhuddlan's loss will be another place's gain. Mr J 0 Hughes acted as Fiecretary. Concert. Last night (Thursday) the Welsh Wesleyans held their annual concert at the Reading and Recreation Room. Mr H J Hughes occupied the chair, nd Mr Jas Green conducted. The room was crowded, and all the items were well rendered and well received, the following taking part:—Misses Eveline Roberts, Nellie Owen, Messrs R Jones, D M Jones, T C Jones and R I' Roberts (Denbigh), Mr Morgan and party, and the Rhuddlan Male Voice Choir (Mr Isaac Jones, conductor). Mrs Williams (Bryn Castell) acted as accompanist.

Prestatyn Notes. 1 (BY TRIBUTE). There is still left in my constitution a few lingering touches of last week's indisposition, arising from the sad news that the Liberal Clnb was in its last dyiwg agony. The club, however, has not yet given up the ghost. It remains for the most part in a state of suspended animation, but it breaks out occasionally into con- vulsions, and its paroxisms of agony are painful to behold. A solemn gloom has settled upon the community, and for the sake of those interested I hope that this hour of trial will soon pass away. The doctors in attendance are not without hopes that by careful nursing aud attention to diet aid a little port wine administered at discreet intervals the patient may ultimately recover. Financial worries have brought the patient into this deplorable condition, and these must not be mentioned within the hearing of the patient, as, if this were done, sudden death would be the result. Billiards, we are told, has interfered with those higher aims with which the Liberal Association started its career. Those higher ainos, dear me; how superior we are, how nice it sounds. These higher aim are, I pre- sume, the exclusive property of the Liberals. What are they ? To cultivate the art of misrepresentation and the use of nasty expressions when speaking of others who differ. How to defy the law—another noble aim. Impede the efforts of education reformers—another truly noble aim. Spread still the obsolete doctrines of Richard £""1.1.J .n.g. Cultivate uncharitableuess. narrow minded- ness, and bigotry, and sneer at others for adopting temperance principles-all truly noble sims, and billiards interferes with this exalted programme. So away with it. Get thee behind me, Satan. This demoralizing influence must be banished. We have now for sale two billiard tables, likewise one ping-pong table; one at a time if you like. Put it in the bidding, gentlemen. One handsome up-to-date billiard table. Its influence militated against far higher aims. I am sorry to have to tell you, but we do not mind it spreading its demoral- izing and corrupting influences amongst outsiders and elsewhere. We are determined to put the evil thing away from amongst us." Visitors and members must only speak in whispers and wear their Sunday-go-to-meeting faces when privileged to enter this temple after being swept and garnished and freed from all degrading influences—this temple et apart for the discussion of topics for the promotion of the rights and liberties of the people and for which our fore- fathers shed their precious blood. Bah The Prestatyn Liberal Association ia very much perplexed at the mem- bers of the club devoting so much time to the game of billiards. I don't think there has been such an excess of this. It is the tightness of the money market that perplexes. If the money had rolled in from billiards we would have heard very little of any trouble. But, 0 it gives me tiie heart ache to think that in future the wretched pub wid get the benefit of the few coppers spent at the club. Ah me, a feeling of sad- ness steals over me at this unhappy prospect, melaucholy claims me for its own. I feel like breaking down. I must adjourn-nature will have its way-oppressed and cast down I retire for a moment-Now prop me up-just a nip, please. Thank you Another one ? Just see first if therejare any Radicals or Councillors passing this way-No. I don't see any—Well I don't mind if I do-Ah, that's better-I think 1 can go on now, In accord with the majority of commonplace suffering humanity and others more exalted, such as lawyers, Whitaker Wrights, members of Parliament, policemen, urban councillors. and doctors of divinity, I am plagued at times with sharp twinges of conscience. These bolts from the blue, I am pleased to say, only descend at rare intervals. Publicans, brewers, distillers, billiard table makers, playing card manufacturers, tobacco manufacturers, printers of newspapers and frivolous literature (Radical newspapers and publishers of Free Church papers are not included in the list), makers of children's toys, footballs, cricket and golfing implements, these people are outside the pale and are net subject to this healthy spiritual action. Their business is to rake in money, to corrupt and to demoralise, not to uplift their fellows to higher aims. Conscience with them is stifled, and all these wicked trades ought to be abolished by the strong arm of the law, and every man be made to study his own elevation and instil the doctrine of higher aims into others. Conscienee would then be awakened and turned in the right direction. Down, therefore, with all these contaminating trades. This is the only way to uphold the just rights and liberties of the people. In my unregenerate days I have been guilty of following vain shadows, and have extended my patronage to soms of these black-listed trades, but I listened to the still small voice, and now go on my way rejoicing, adopting as my motto the magic, exhilarating aspiration, "Excelsior," When I see little boys in the street playing marble or top my heart is stirred within me. to think that such frivolity should occupy their infantile minds when they ought to have their gaze fixed on higher aims. When I see children paddle in the summer time on the sea shore, and w'th spade and bucket sport them selves in the sand, I regret my wasted days spent in a similar manner. I sigh when I see young schoolgirls play battledore and shuttlecock,and sad renectioneit arise within me when I hear the boarding school miss practise her scales, but the climax of my agony is reached when I see or hear of men playing billiards or whist or draughts in a club when they ought to be absorbed in the endeavour to promote and defend the just rights and liberties of the people.

The Rev Ellis Davies, Old Colwyn, was the chief speaker at a meeting in the National School on Monday evening, in connection with the Church of England Temperance Society, the chair being occupied by the Ven Archdeacon Thomas. Will of the late Mr John Jones. The will of Mr John Jones, of Arsyllfa, Butter- ton Road, Rhyl, and senior partner in the firm of Jones and Son, grocers, St Asaph and Rhyl, who died on the 16th day of February, 1903, was proved at the St Asaph Probate Registry, on the 20h day ot March, by the son of the deceased, Mr John Peter Jones, one of the executors. The will is dated the 8th day of May, 1902. The deceased appointed as executors and trustees of his will his wife, Mary Jones, and his son, John Peter Jones. The testator bequeathed his household furniture to his wife, and his half-share in the business of Jones and Son, grocers, to his son John Peter Jones absolutely. The residue of the estate is left in trust to pay the interest thereof to his wife, Mary Jones, during her widowhood after her death or re-marriage to pay the interest thereof to his said son John Peter Jones and after the do, th of the said John Peter Jones, to be divided in equal shares to the children of the said John Peter Jones. The gross amount of the estate is £8,027 6s lid, and the net amount is E7,958 19s 4d, in- eluding personal estate of the net value of 9,3,258 19s 4d. The Bishop of St Asaph was the preacher on Sunday at the Chapel Royal. Preferments. The Rev. James Gallagher, M.A., of Clwyd Hall, Ruthin, licensed preacher in the diocese of St. Asaph, has been appointed vicar of Crowton, near Northwich, in successijn to the Rev J F Phelps, resigned. The patron of the Crowton living is the Vicar of Weaverham. The Rev Geo. Ishmael Roberts, one of the curates of Oswestry, has beeen presented by the Vicar of Gresford to the living of Gwersyllt.

Bangor. At the Bangor Police Court 69 persons were summoned by Mr R D Evans, rate collector, for the non-payment of poor rate. The first case taken was that of Mr H 0 Hughes, assist- ant overseer and Mr Evans's prediceasor in office. It was stated that the rate collector had only called once for the rate, and that authority to take proceedings was given at a meeting ot over- seers convened by the rate collector himself, in- stead of by the assistant overseer. The justices held that this meeting was irregular, and dismissed the case. Some of the defendants applied for costs, on the ground that they had come prepared to defend the cases, but the Bench declined to make an order.

Enterprise of the Rhyl t Property Company. That the Queen's Palace Syndicate, as the Rhyl Property Company is now best known, have un- bounded confidence in the future of Rhyl is proved not only by the elaborate provision they have made, and are still further making, for the entertainment of both residents and visitors, especially the latter, but also by the extensive alterations and additions now in progress in connection with the Queen's Hctel, which, for the information of outsiders whose attention this notice may attract, we may state, adjoins the palatial buildings known as the Queen's Arcade and Palace. Having had an opportunity this week of inspecting the plans, according to which the Queen's Hotel is practically being rebuilt on a largei'scale, and which have been prepared by Mr W J Simcock, architect, of this town, we append a few particulars concerning them. As is well- known, they formed a subject of inquiry at the Rhyl Licensing Sessions and at subsequent sittings of the local magistrates, who eventually approved of them after they had passed the Urban District Council. The frontage of the hotel will harmonise with the buildings with which frequenters of the West Parade are already familiar. A grand central entrance will afford access from the Parade to what will doubtless be the leading feature of the hotel, a cafe and billiard room 74 feet in length hty 46 feet in breadth. This huge apartment is to be fitted up in the best possible style, with all the latest conveniences, in- cluding a silver grill. The billiard playinsc portion will, of course, be screened off. The room will be well lighted, not only by side windows. but also by a fine central arched lantern light which will also serve the purposes of ventilation. Further access to the c-fe and grill room will be by way of a grand entrance from the Arcade. The bar room and other accommodation on the same floor is to be better arranged, and the present entrance thereto from the Parade will be retained. Lavatories, cold stores, and general stores will be provided below the cafe and grill room. Provision is made on the first floor for a grand central lounge, 35 ft. by' 31 ft., with access to the balcony overlooking the Parade and with all conveniences in the shape of ladies' and gentlemen's lavatories; while surrounding the orna- mental lantern which will admit light from above to the cafe and grill room there are to be ten bedrooms, and also bath rooms.On the second floor twelve new bedrooms will be provided, together with scullery, pantry and kitchen accommodation communicating with the ground floor and other departments by means of lifts. It is intended to arrange for flat roofing for the greater part of the building, from which visitors to the hotel will be able to secure a magnificent view of the Promenade. The Rhyl Property Company hope to have the whole work completed long before the the height of the season. The exterior work is being carried out with the best quality Aston Hall buff bricks, with a combination of Ruabon facing bricks and Yorkshire stone work. The glazing and decorative throughout will be on an elaborate scale. A considerable portion of the constructional iron work has already arrived on the scene and is being placed in position.

Welsh Wesleyan Bazaar at Prestatyn. In connection with the Prestatyn, Meliden, and Dyserth Welsh Wesleyan Churches (Rhyl circuit) a grand three-days' bazaar was opened yesterday (Thursday) in the Prestatyn Town Hall. Of helpers there was quite an army, as will be seen from the names appearing in this notice, and the result of their efforts was a very effective display of useful and fancy goods, which were tastefully exposed for sale on stalls designed so as to give the room the appearance of a scene in "Olde Chester." In accord- ance with the rules of the Wesleyan Conference the Rhyl circuit is under an obligation to provide an additional house for the Prestatyn minister, and at one of the quarterly meetings of the circuit it was unanimously reaoked to move in the matter. A committee was appointed, and finally it was rlecided to buy a house, which was done last December at a cost of £ 500. The raising of the money for the purchase of the house rests upon the Prestatyn, Dyserth and Meliden Churches, hence the bazaar as a means to the attainment of that object. The arrangement of the stalls was similar to that on the occasion of a bazaar held in the same buildinp a month ago, and amongst those upon whom this part of the undertaking devolved were the tollowing :-Messrs Edward Ellis (Nant Mill), Thomas Ellis (Hafod Terrace), Thos Williani8 (Penrhwylfa), John Roberts (Fig Tree), Wm Roberts do, David Roberts (Fair View), Robt Jones (Jessamine House), Wm Henry Ellis (Church Walks), and Edward Jones (Roslyn Terrace). The officers of the Bazaar Committee consist of the Rev Edward Humphreys (super- intendent of the circuit and stationed at Rhyl), president; Rev H M Davies (Prestatyn), vice'- president Miss Williams (Tan Rallt, Meliden), treasurer and Councillor J E L Jones (Prestatyn) and Mr J Evans Hughes (Dyserth), hon secretaries. Councillor John Cunnah had been announced to perform the opening ceremony, but owing to a bereavement he was unable te keep the appoint- ment. In his absence, therefore, the Rev H M Davies formally declared the bazaar open, at the same time explaining why Mr Cunnah could not be amongst them that day. There was a good attend- ance, and soon the stall-holders and their assistants were busily at work. To-day (Friday) it is hoped that Mrs Linnell (wife of the Chairman of the Prestatyn Urban District Council) will be able to open the bazaar; and for to-morrow's ceremony Mrs Batters is announced. Llandudno. May Day Festival. Like Rhyl, Llandudno is not this year going to hold its festival on May Day. There the date fixed is Tuesday, May 5th, and the Marquis of Anglesey has consented to become patron.

Wrexham. Congregational Union. The annual meetings of the North Wales English Congregational Union were held at Wrexham this week. On Wednesday a discussion on the Educa- tion Act was led by Mr Brynmor Jones, M.P., and an approval of the Llandrindod proposals was passed. Mr F L Rawlins, of Rhyl, treasurer of the Union, declined the position of vice- chairman, and that veteran Congregationalist, Mr P Mostyn Williams, was appointed. Mold. County School. The annual meeting of the governors of Alun County School was held on Tuesday. Mr T Parry, J.P., was re-elected chafrman, and Mr J Astbury vice-chairman. The governors unanimously ex- pressed their sympathy with the Central Welsh Board in the endeavour to amend the county scheme so as to enable scholars to remain in school until 19 years of age. They also approved the proposal to increase the annual fixed grant from ilOO to f,250, with the object of improving the financial stability of the school.

The second social this year under the auspices of the Rhyl Cycling Club took place at the Grosvenor Temperance Hotel last Thursday evening. A better attendance could have been desired, but for all that a very pleasant time was spent. Refreshments were partaken of at in- tervals, and besides dancing and various kinds of games there was also amusement in the shape of phonograph selections by Mr J Foulkes, jun., and conjuring tricks by Mr F H Samuels. Mr Tilby attended 140 Committee meetings, Mr Ellis 130, Mr Maltby 122, and Mr T D Jonea 111. Rossall School Scholarships. From a list before us of those who have been elected to scholarships in Rossall School it is very pleasing to find the names of local boys figuring therein very prominently. Especially do we congratulate Mr R M Hugh-Jones, of Colet House, on the successes of his pupils in the scholarship examinations. Amongst those elected to junior scholarships in Rossall School is H M Lloyd, a son of the Vicar of Rhyl and a pupil of Colet House. Another pupil of Colet Hcuse who has brought honour to his school is H N Pearce, the only boy who has been elected to a senior scholarship direct from a preparatory school. Those who have been promoted from junior to senior scholarships include F B Reece (late of Colet House) and H B Edwards (son of a former Vicar of Rhyl and late of Sywell House). With these latest successes Rossall School has now on its roll seven Colet House boys, or eight altogether from Rhyl. Rhyl Naturalists' Field Club. It is proposed to revive the Rhyl Society of Natural Science and Literature in the form of aField Club. The club will make periodical excursions I during the summer months to places of interest under the guidance of those who are well versed in the geography, physical geography, history, natural history, antiquity and beauty of the neigh- bourhood. As the society is intended more particularly for teachers, pupil teachers and those interested in nature knowledge, every facility will be given to members in the pursuit of their studies. Already a large number of influential ladies and gentlemen have signified their intention of joining. County Court. All summonses against persons residing out of the district for the next court to be held at Rhyl on Friday, April 17th, must be entered not later than Saturday next, March 28th, and those against persons residing in the district not later than Tuesday next, March 31st. An Earthquake. Rhyl had the distinguished honour, in common with other parts of the country, of being visited by an earthquake on Tuesday night. Several persons state their experience of the shock, how the beds beayed, and how some of them got from between the blankets to see if the cat was in the room," and so on. Alexandra Hospital. On the 20th inst Mrs Roberts, of Handel House, most kindly brought her Zingara Troupe to the hospital. Dancing, costume and other songs and several most amusing sketches, formed a very delightful entertainment, which was greatly ap- preciated by the audience. The Zingara Troupe. Their bazaar promises to be quite an important event for Easter week, and it is of such an uncommon character that it is sure to be a great draw, not only to our own visitors, who we hope will be numerous, but from neighbouring resorts, as so many people from other places haye promised their patronage. The bazaar is to be well adver tised. Boys' Brigade. The annual tea given by Mr M A Ralli, J.P to the members of the Rhyl company of the Boys' Brigade took place in the Brigade Hall last night. There was a good attendance, aDd the youthful company that surrounded the well laden tables received every attention from the following :-Mr F L Rawlins (captain of the company), Mrs and Miss Rawlins, Mr W Freeman (secretary) and Mrs £ reeman, Mr and Mrs F C Tailby, Miss Ma £ *ie Jones, Miss Percival, Miss Phillips, and Mesors Godfrey Parry (treasurer), J Roberts Jones, Edward Jones, Harris, Caradoc Williams, and Gomer Owen. Mr A W James, Grosvenor Temperance Hotel, was entrusted with the catering, which he carried out in a very satisfactory manner. A few short speeches followed the tea, in the course of which Mr Rawlins referred to the generosity of Mr Ralli, who had given the boys a tea every year since the formation of the company. The best way in which the boys could show their appreciation of Mr Ralli s kindly interest in the movement was by attending the Brigade meeting as regularly and punctually as possible, and jhe hoped they would bear that in mind.—Mr Gomer Owen, who proposed a vote of thanks to the donor of the tea, remarked that though there were about 70 members on the roll only about 35 attended the meetings regularly. This state of afftirs, he hoped, would be considerably improved next session.— Corporal Ellis having seconded the motion, it was carried with acclamation. Cheers for Mr Ralli and for the officers of the company followed, and Mr Godfrey Parry having mentioned that it was Mr Rawlins' birth- day, the boys in a hearty manner wished their captain many happy returns." The four old members are seeking re-election, tnree ot tnem in the Abergele ward and one in the Pensarn. There are three in the former by the fact that Mr Perkins is standing for it instead of for his old ward. It is appropriate that he should represent the ward he resides in, although the swopping has in it an element of risk. We trust, however, that the Council and town will not thereby be deprived of Mr Perkins' services. he has proved himself a most painstaking councillor and the present is not a time when Abergele can dispense with the services of one of ita most compe- tent men. Lord Dundonald. Major General the Earl of Dundonald denies the report that he intends to resign his command in Canada, li Christ Church Band of Hope. To terminate the winter session in connection with Christ Church (Congregational) Band of Hope a tea was given to the members in the lecture hall on Monday evening. About 8u sat down, and their wants were well attended to by the Rev E E Ingham and Mrs Ingham, the Misses Wright, Pearson, and Chambers, Mr F H Samuels and others. Various amusements were afterwards indulged in, and altogether the session was wound up in a very pleasant manner.

Rhyl Urban District Council Election 1903. TO THE ELECTORS OF THE WEST WARD. LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, At the request of sever?,! influential and heavy ratepayers and property owners in the above ward, I have been induced to again offer my services at the forthcoming election of Urban District Councillors. In submitting my candidature to your notice, I may mention that I contested the above ward at the last election, and that I was only four votes short of being elected that I have been a. ratepayer in the West Ward for a period ex- tending over about 18 years, and have also been a builder, employer of labour, and property owner for about 10 years. The experience I have gained during these years, I respectfully submit, qualifies me to participate in the control of town matters.
