COLWYN BAY. No DRINK FOR THE PIER VISITORS, -At the Monthly meeting af the Colwyn Bay District Council, Mr Joseph Dicken moved that the coun- cil prayed that the -magistrates at the licensing sessions wonld not grant the licence referred to, and, further, that it was the council's opinion that the licence was not required, and that the best interests of Colwyn Bay ard the Pier Co. oulù be served by refusing the licence. He did Dot move that on behalf of any temperance asso- ciation, or chapel, church, or other religious insti- tution. For his uwn part he would prefer granting five new hotel licences to one pier licence, Mr J Roberts seconded. At present the pavilion was a necessity and a success, but many peocle would decline to go to the pier if it were turned into a Public-house. The motion was car)ied, five mem- bers voting for it and none against. Mr George Sevan said it was very unfair on the part of Mr Sicken to spring this resolution upon the council without notice, or, in fact, to bring it forward at all. There were several members, including him- self (Mr Bevan) who could not vote because they were shareholders in the Pier Company, but he I'alutt none the less protest against the council exceeding its duties. Tbty were sent there to Jook after the sanitary interests of Colwyn Bay.— he motion was carried.

ADVERTISING-HOW AND WHY-
annum. No extras, no vacation, and diet un- Paralleled." Having regard to change of time and circum- stances between the advertisement of Mr Squeers and the one I next give, there is a similarity of otibstance (an appeal for parental confidence) and style Vacancies now occur in the establishment of a gentleman who undertakes the care and education of a few backward boys, who are beguiled and trained to study by kind discipline, without the least severity (which too often frustrates the end desired.) Situation extremely healthy. Sea and country air; deep gravelly Soil. Christian gentility assiduously cultivated Oil sound Church principles. Diet unsurpassed. Wardrobes carefully preserved. The course of instruction comprises English, classics, mathe- P, matics, and science. Inclusive terms, 80 guineas Per annum, quarterly in advance. Music, Rawing, and modern languages are extras, but Moderate. Address I bave rpad of a IIcbool where the only extras were "pure milk and the guitar." The Great Servant Question is always present, aDd indissolubly bound up vrith our domestic "feand happiness. There was, and I think there 5^11 is, the Metropolitan Association for —^friending Young Servants." Mere I give one °'their advertisements, which if not as alluring as one of Mr Sqmers is charming for its honest 8,Ifplicity and brevity: ''Will anyone undertake as SERVANT a br'S:ht, clean, neat girl, who is deceitful, lazy, and inclined to be dishonest V Address, Hon Secretary, M.A-B.Y S, 21, Charlotte Street, S.E Some years ago there was an advertisement for a kind mastar aud a pleasant home for a large savage dog. Punch described the kind of which the large savage dog would lead the j^&d master. But I think that in a well-ordered household the savage dog would be preferable to ne maid-servant described. The next is a much *&Ore deserving case :— Undsr-Housekeeper, Under-Matron, desired Jy a Young Woman, age 22. Energetic, domesticated. Great misfortune in losing right r, arl)), but good artificial one. Happy home and 6Biall remuneration. Apply- Having given instances of people of insufficient ^Salification seeking employment, I will go to "0 other side of the account. "Can any lady or gentleman recommend a MAN, and WIFE (Church of England) ? M^n jjseful indoors and out. Principal duties—large flower garden, small conservatory, draw bath- must wait at table, understand lamps, non- (!lnoker, wear dress suit, except in garden. Clothes and beer not found. Family, lady and child, a^y-help. House-parlour-maid kept. Must not to small bedroom. Wife plain cook (good), undertake kitchen offices, dining-room, and (wash clothes) Joint wages, £ 50, all found." We often hear complaints of the unreasonable Requirements of the labourer. It would be Bociallv advantageous if the tyrannical exactions of employers were more frequently published. I now pass from the mysteries of lowly domestic service to a sphere of aristocratic life:— The Great-niece of a Lord Chamberlain to £ itig George III REQUIRES a SITUATION as COMPANION to a Lady, or Cicerone to young jadies. Her mind if highly cultivated. English habits and Parisian accent. Apply by letter,1 ^93sar What might not be expected of the grand-niece of a Lord Chairberlain of the Couit of George III and Queen Charlotte This advantage brings to mind that Byron said of Moore—that he dearly loved a Lord," and is another evidence and fine example of our national love of aristocracy, and of social distinctions generally. I have not space for more than two other rich Samples of the national love of titles, from daily 210tices of deaths and marriages :— "On the 22od inst, 1897, at Lisbon, William Thorold Wood, cousin to the Bishop of Rochester, J° Sir John Thorold, of Syston Park, and brother to the Rector of Widmerpool. He was a man of Rreat mental endowments and exemplary conduct." flight they not have been unrecorded bad he not oeen related to a Bishop and a Baronet ? Here is a gem, extracted from the Morning Post,' of 1893 :— COPPER WEDDING. "DE COURCELLES—ST. AUBYN. On fie 7th November, 18^3, at St Marylebone Church, W, by the Rev Grant E Thomas, B.C.L, and Privately, owing to family bereavements, the J Hector de Conrcelles, M.A, Worcester College, Oxford, and some time incumbent of St Andrew's, Ardrossan, to Matilda Chrysogoria, daughter of the late Rev William John St Anbyn, M.A, Rector of Stoke Damerel, Devon- Port, and granddaughter of Sir Tobn St Aubyn, j^K.S, fifth Baronet of Clowance and St Michael's Mount, in the county of Cornwall; and also granddaughter of the late Sir Thomas Barret A'emard, Bart, of Belhus, Essex, and bis wife Dorothy, Lady Lennard, sister and co-heir of the above-earned Sir John St Aubyn, Bart, F.R.S." The following ribald skit appeared in the same Paper directly afterwards:- "BRAZEN WEDDING. POYNTZ-D'ARGENT—CHAMPIGNON.- On November 9th, 1 f-88, at St Wombat's, Stony Stratford, by the Rev Peter Broke Poyntz- d'Argent, father of the bridegroom, and privately, Owing to affliction in bride's family, the Rev Maximus Cadwallader Poyntz-d'Argent, B.A, Brasenose, and some time curate-in-clnrge of Cabbidge, Beds, to Rosy Gillian, only surviving child of Varie Champignon, Esq, of Champignon. Beds, and granddaughter of the late Sir De Horsey Champignon, Kt, ol Muckross, and Maternal great-grandniece of the late Honourable Carolina A W Skeggs." The moral of these articles is that the desire to obtain or dispose of biain labour, or manual labour, or material, or anything valuable or Worthless—real or imaginary, may be most easilv, cheaply, and speedily satisfied by advertising in a 8ticeessful newspaper. I trust that some of the ttany who are often complaining of bad times or bad luck will mark, learn, and digest" the Moral, and thus turn repining into rejoicing, and gloom into enduring brightness. Rhyl, August 10th, 1901. Yz
