A561 THE ART OF ADVERTISING.—A German journalist has recently been devot- ing himself to a special form of study which one may style "the psychology of advertisement." He finds, as the result of his labours, that an advertisement should appear at least ten times in about the same place in a paper. At the first insertion the reader doesn't see it; at the second he sees it, but does not read it; at the third he reads it; at the fourth he findls out the price of the article advertised; at the fifth he notes the address at the sixth he speaks of it to his wife at the seventh he determines to buy it; at the eighth he buys it; at the ninth he speaks of it to his friend's at the tenth his friends tell their wives about it. Then comes multiplication, and the result may be left to the imagination. Public Announcements. VICTORIA PAVILION, COLWYN BAY. Secretary W. A. PRYCE-DAVIS. The Earl Carrington.

The Earl Carrington. At Gwydyr Castle is a letter from the King, written when he was Prince of Wales, to Earl Carrington, whom the Royal writer addresses as My dear Charlie." This circumstance is brought to mind by reading the following interesting remarks in the Daily Despatch" of Tuesday:— ROBBING THE KING. Lord Carrington, who was personally invested by the King this morning with the Order of the Garter, is an old friend and a quondam school chum of the King. The recent Crown Lands Act, there is reason to believe, was actually the product of the King and Lord Carrington in collabora- tion." The King's Liberal tendencies as regards all matters appertaining to the welfare of the poor are well known, and when the present Government came into power, and Lord Carrington was made the head of the Board of Agriculture, the King met him at dinner, and in the course of conversation said, Well, Carrington, you will now have as opportunity to put that scheme of yours for robbing me of my Crown lands into operation," to which Lord Carrington replied, "No, sir, I merely pro- pose to sow them with a still wider and deeper affection on the part of your people towards your- self." Thereafter the King and Lord Carrington had more than one conference, in which the Crown Lands Bill was drawn up between them. Shortly, however, before Lord Carrington made known officially the details of the scheme at a horticultural show near Banbury, both the King and he seem to have become possessed of a fear that this scheme for cutting up the Crown lands into small allotments might be regarded as too revolutionary. Lord Carrington was expected to make a long and im- portant speech, but, as a matter of fact, he merely delivered a brief and prosaic account of his pro- posals. He subsequently explained that the King thought that it would be unwise to make too much of the matter, especially as Lords--and Lords (mentioning several great Conservative land own- ers) were antagonistic to the scheme. THE CEREMONY OF INVESTITURE. King Edward on Monday morning left Euston to visit Lord and Lady Colebrooke, at Abington, Lanarkshire. Previous to his Majesty's departure I u s i Earl Carrington, President of the Board of Agri- culture, attended at Buckingham Palace and re- ceived, at the King's hands, investiture with the Insignia of the Most Noble Order of the Garter, to which his lordship was recently admitted, in suc- cession to the late Duke of Rutland. The ceremony took place in one of the small State rooms, and there were present, in addition to the members of his Majesty's suite, Garter King of Arms, the Master of-Ceremonies, the Lord Chamberlain, and the Master of the Household. The proceedings were very brief. His Majesty personally placed the blye riband of the Order across the recipient's breast, and affixed the badge. His Majesty wore Field Marshal's uniform and the Order of the Garter. The Master of the Ceremonies, Garter King of Arms, and all the other officials present were also in uniform. Among those in attendance on the King were Lord Suffield, the Hon. Sidney Greville, and Captain the Hon. Seymour Fortescue. LORD CARRINGTON AND THE LAND TENURE BILL. Lord Carrington has written as follows to Mr. James Rowlands, M.P. :—"[l shall be delighted to accept the invitation of the Executive Committee of the Land Law Reform Association to attend a conference on the subject of the Land Tenure Bill on the 22nd, and I hope you will express my grate- ful thanks to your committee for the compliment of asking me. The feeling in favour of the bill is increasing daily, and I confidently look for the support of the whole of the army of progress in my endeavours to get the bill passed into law."
