THE SEASON'S GREETINGS.

THE SEASON'S GREETINGS. THE year A.D. 1905 has almost run its course, and we have reached the season of peace and concord, 1 1 ,I,e n the air is r'ng'ng with good wishes. To this chorus of kindly greetings we desire to add our own. We have on this occasion a special reason for wishing our readers a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. For one thing, we now have the pleasure of addressing a much wider community of supporters than our voice could have reached this time last year. Another reason —for is not gratitude a lively sense of favours to come ?—is that we hope they will assist us in adding to their already immense number. It was in January of the present year that we commenced to cover a greatly extended area as compared with the district which for years had been regarded as peculiarly our sphere of influence," and we are happy to be able to state that the step then taken has been more than justified by our experience of the last twelve months. From the outset we have received the most cordial of welcomes from the localities added to our list, and at the same time we have enjoyed heartier support from the more restricted area which until a year ago we had been content to serve. Not only is this the case, but we are continually receiving invita- tions to further multiply our editions so as to open up still further new ground. It is not in any vain-glorious spirit that we mention these things, but simply because we are well assured that they are of great interest to a large number of old and faithful readers. The progress of the Weekly Neivs, if it has not been unusually rapid, has at any rate been continuous. We have always moved forward, never gone back a single pace and the result is that we have outstepped one competitor after another. These are days of keen competition in every walk of life, in every sphere of action and it is with special thankful- ness that we look back upon a year of difficulties overcome and obstacles surmounted. It is our readers and supporters generally whom we have to thank for this happy result, and we take the oppor- tunity of expressing our feelings towards them by wishing all the merriest of Merry Christmases and the happiest of Happy New Years.

ANOTHER WELSHMAN HONOURED. GALLANT .little Wales is coming to its own. This has been a record year for the Principality, and Welshmen the world over will regard it as the beginning of a new and brighter era in the history of "Hen Wlad fy Nhadau." In October it was announced that London had for the second time chosen a Cymro to be its Lord Mayor. December finds a typical Welshman entering the Cabinet as one of His Majesty's Ministers of State. In the midst of the enthusiasm aroused by this mark of distinction, a football team representative of Wales- does what England has hitherto failed to accom- plish-wrests the laurels from the brows of the hitherto invincible New Zealanders. And while the shouts of exultation are yet ringing along the valleys and reverberating amongst the mountain peaks, the welcome news arrives that still another Welshman has received a high honour at the hands of the Prime Minister of Great Britain.- Tuesday morning's newspapers contained the welcome announcement that one of the new Lords of the Treasury appointed by Sir Henry Campbell- Bannerman is that genuine patriot and high-minded politician Mr. Herbert Lewis, M.P. In Mr. Lewis, the people of Wales have a Welshman and a Parliamentary representative after their own heart, a man of lofty character, who is admired as sincerely by his political opponents as by his Liberal colleagues and constituents. It is very fitting that the office for which Mr. Lewis has been chosen is the one in which Tom Ellis gained so much distinction and served the home-land so loyally. Mr. Lewis has spent thirteen years at St. Stephens, and we hope that there are before him very many years of useful Parliamentary service.
