Welsh Golfing Union.1
Welsh Golfing Union. CONCLUDING EVENTS AT THE CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING. "EBBSWORTH^CUP^WON-FOR-RHOIT ON-SEA. SPECIALLY REPORTED FOR THE Weekly News. Pembrey, South Wales, Monday. I have already informed you that on Saturday the, Llangattock Bowl was won, by C. H. Turn- bull (Glamorganshire). The same card decided the Amateur Championship, and the victory of this brilliant young player was a very popular one. Last year, at Rhos-on-Sea, Turnbull gave a specially fine display, and those who witnessed his game then were by no means surprised at his present success. True, there is a great difference between the two courses. All the competitors here are ready to express the opinion that the Ashburn- ham course is the stiffest that the Union has up to now visited. As an old stager observ- ed, "If you can't play good golf, you might just as well pack your bags and go home." 'inis is, of course, as it should be, and is in the nature of praise rather than of reflection on the quality of the green. Even those players who have fared the worst are fain to admit that the fault is with them, and not with the course. There weriei no' North Wales players among the sixteen who qualified for the Championship. The cards returned for the Llangattock Bowl included — 1St 2nd T'tl. P. W.Brundritt. 99 95 194 G. H. Goldsmith 98 97 195 R.B.Perkins. 98 98 196 In the competition for the Duncan Shield, E. C. Morel (Penarth) won the trophy by clever play. The following cards out of the. 39 re- turned will interest your readers Gr's. H'cp. Net. E. C. Morel. 168 10 158 G. H. Goldsmith 195 26 169 P. W.Brundritt. 194 10 184 R.B.Perkins. igG 6 190 To-day (Monday) the whole of the morning was taken up with the Dunraven Cup, and E. C. Morel, who had won the Duncan Shield, bade fair to capture this trophy also, but tied with R. M. Brown (Swansea). Brown's card was 80-0--80, and that of Morel 82-2-80. In this same round G. H. Goldsmith's score was 98-13-85. In .Lie afternoon came the first round in the Amateur Championship, followed by the bogey handicap for the Corbett Cup, in which J. C. Brundritt (Conway) and J. A. Alexander tied for first place with cards of 2 down on handicaps of 3 and 5 respectively. The Treder Cup tie was afterwards played off, resulting in a win for R. T. Hammond (Ashburnham). A RHOS-ON-SEA VICTORY. Pembrey, Tuesday. To-day's play in the third and semi-final rounds in the championship resulted in Hal Ludlow and R. M. Brown being left in for the final to-morrow, over 36 holes. Then came an event of considerable interest to North Wales, the Ebsworth Cup (medal handicap). Previous winners — 1897 Dr. E. Reid (Swansea) 84- 7-77 1898 E. L. Jacobs (Aberdovey) 99-12—87 1899 F. J. Burr (Aberdovey) 85- 7-78 1900 Jas. Hunter (Glamorgan) 82- 8-74 1901 Dr. Purchas (Aberdovey) 101-18-84 1902 Captain Boger (Porthcawl) 97-14—83 1903 R. B. Perkins (Carnarvon) 79- 4—75 This cup was won last year, at Rhos-on-Sea, by R. B. Perkins, of the Carnarvonshire Club, and by a coincidence it now fell to the lot of a member of the Knos-on-Sea Club, G. H. Gold- smith, who won the prizei with a score of 90-13-77. Pembrey, Wednesday. The final in the championship resulted in a win for Hal Ludlow, the famous black-and- white artist. In the tie for the Corbett Cup, J. A. Alexander won with a score of 8 down, and J. C. Brundritt (Carnarvonshire,) scored 9 down. The Carnarvonshire Cup was won by J. S. Dyas, Glamorganshire.

The Deputy Clerk (Mr. Post) submitted a let- ter which he had received from Mr. J. Heathcote Addie, of the Glynllifon Estate Office, Carnar- von, in which he stated he would be obliged to come to Penmaenmawr during the next fortnight to discuss with the Clerk, town and estate busi- ness. Mr. C. H. Darbishire remarked there had been great complaints in Penmaenmawr as to the lay- ing out of the town. Everybody followed his own whim in the matter of streets and buildings. He thought it was extremely corteous on the part of Mr. Addie to give them the opportunity of expressing their views on these matters of lay- ing out of streets, &c. He moved that a com- mittee of the Council be appointed to meet him and he hoped that the other lanidlords of the district would deal with the matter in the same way. The motion was carried, and a committee con. sisting of Col. Darbishire, Mr. Coverley and Mr David Jones was selected to discuss the matter with Mr. Addie.
-----Saturday's Swimming Gala.
Saturday's Swimming Gala. To THE EDITOR OF The Weekly News. Sir,—Through the medium of your paper I should like to express, on behalf of the Excelsior Amateur Swimming Club, our best thanks to the residents and visitors who so generously patron- ised our gala on Saturday last, thus shewing their genuine interest in the art of swimming and in the welfare of our Club. The Committee have also asked me to express their sincere apologies to those who witnessed the event for the apparent mismanagement of the gala, which resulted in a long delay between each item of the programme. At the same time they desire me to make it clear that nearly the whole of the programme was entirely disarrang- Very r°USh sea that was run- w £ ng llt dangerous, if not absolute- Xrr ? tfor several of the events to be A *e otft' "thereby causing keen disappoint- competitors as well as the specta- tors. Doubtless, although many'would quite natur- ally complain about the tediousness of the gala, they would at the same time sympathise with our misfortune in .having such an awkward sea to contend with. In conclusion, the members of the Club as a whole would like to express their gratefulness to the gentlemen who so unselfishly furnished us with the prizes, and to all those who rallied round us on the day of the gala.—Yours, &c.. WM. SCHOFIELD, Hon. Secretary. Avondale, Colwyn Bay, 5th September, 1904.
