Victoria Pavilion Concerts.
Victoria Pavilion Concerts. There have been good houses throughout the week, and the concerts have all been excellent. On Saturday, an enjoyable programme was given. The orchestral items, cleverly conducted by Mons. Verbrugghen, were well selected and cleverly performed. Mons. Verbrugghen was heard to advantage in his violin solo, Introduc- tion of Rondo Capriccioso (Saint Saens), and had a tremendous reception.. The orchestra played one exceedingly popular item, the inter- mezzo from L'arlesienne, and Mr R. S. Redfern rendered the flute solo with exquisite taste. For a concluding item the Post Horn galop was given, the horn being played by Mr J. Taylor. Madame Florence Fulton sang H. Parker's The Lark and Gounod's Berceuse," in the latter of which Mr Bolton rendered the 'cello obligato. On the occasion of her previous visit to Colwyn Bay, Madame Fulton created a furore by her cul- tured vocalism, but now she was not heard at her best, the reason being that she has recently suffered from a severe attack of bronchitis .Wei hope for the talented soprano's speedy recovery, and that she may ere long be well enough to give before a Colwyn Bay audience that clever musical lecture which has delighted so many hundreds of people in Liverpool and Cheshire. As is generally known, Madame Fulton has had a successful career, holds diplomas from the Royal Academy of Music, Trinity College, &c., and she has recommendations from Sir Charles Halle, Sir George M'Farren, Sir A. C. Mackenzie, and other distinguished musicians. Mr Walter Lawley, the famous Yorkshire tenor, sang with acceptance a beautiful composition of his own, "The Carnival," and in reponse to the encore gave When other lips," from the "Bohemian Girl." Mr Griffith Humphrey now concluded a very successful week's engagements, and his sketches were as bright and humorous as ever. On Monday evening—"the Great Rattling Night "-a novel diversion was provided, and gave endless amusement. This was the Toy Symphony. Each member of the audience was given a (more or less) musical toy, by playing which he or she marked his or her approval ot each item on the programme, and as a finale the children stood up, and, at a signal from the con- ductor, rattled away to their heart's content, joining the orchestra in a grand charivari. On Tue.sday evening there was another popular feature-the distribution of two thousand prizes. On each occasion the audience heartily entered into the spirit of the thing, and everybody was well pleased. THE RECITAL. A large number of music-lovers assembled in the Pavilion, on Wednesday afternoon, to hear the pianoforte and violin recital given by Messrs Isidor Cohen (the eminent German pianist) and H. Verbrugghen (our own talented violinist. The programme included sonatas by The Three B's"—Bach, Brahms, and Beethoven. A rare musical treat was enjoyed. THE BARNET NIGHT. At the evening concert, the first moiety of the programme was devoted to Barnet music. Mr J. m F. Barnet, the eminent English composer, well- known as the author of "The Ancient Mariner and "The Building of the Ship," has been on visit to Colwyn Bay, and the compliment was pai" tj him of asking him to conduct the performance of some of his own works. On taking up blS position on the platform Mr Barnet was given a hearty reception. As a conductor, Mr I., Barnet belongs to the too severely automatic school of English leaders, but his music, somewhat Mendelssohnian in character, is none the less charming. While his baton was being wielded by his English confrere. Mons. Verbrugghen occupied a seat in the balcony, and joined as heartily as the rest in the applause succeeding each item. The programme opened with M- Barnet's two latest compositions, (a) Lieblied (" Love Song "), and (b) In Alten Styl" (" In the olden syle "), and these were followed by two pieces for strings only (a) Pensee melodique and (b) Fairyland." All were very pretty. Mr Walter Lawley sang the aria "The Harbour Bay," out of The Ancient Mariner," and then followed four movements out of the same coin" posers orchestral suite "The Lay of the Last Minstrel," founded upon Sir Walter Scott's poeJ11 of that name. In the fint, a larghetto, movement the composer has pictured the scene described In Canto. Second, the grey ruins and broken arches of Fair Melrose bathed in the silver moonlight, the music of the chorale for muted violins beif& suggestive of a hymn sung by the old monks* The other movements of the suite are ~(a/, Romance, "Lady Margaret and the Knight,, (Canto Second) (b) Scherzo, The Elfin Page (Canto Second) and (b) finale, The triumph o Cranstown (Canto Sixth). The second portio of the programme was given under the baton o Mr Verbrugghen. The concert was followed by a confetti battle on the pier, the last of the season, which proved great fun. THE ORCHESTRA'S BENEFIT. We have no hesitation in forecasting a crowdsd house on Saturday evening of this week, when the orchestra take their benefit. An amusing prof gramme has been arranged for the first.na composed of "Japanese" item-, which will e given by the now famous Li-Ri-Ki-Kee and. his twenty-seven Zinzeebooms. In the second moiey two notable artistes will appear—Miss Bessi^ Evans, the charming contralto, and Mr Lawley, tenor. The name and fame of Bessie Evans are well known here. In 1892* s won the contralto solo prize at the Rhyl Nation Eisteddfod in the following year was success at the great World's Fair Eisteddfod in Cb«.ca?°' and in February of 1894 had the honour of sing1' before Her late Majesty the Queen at O-borne.
