Evans THE NEW MASTER OF GLANWYDDEN SCHOOLS. —From The Manchester Guardian, we learn that Mr Roberts, of Bethesda, has been appointed Headmasterof Glanwydden Schools,in succession to Mr J. Parri Gruffydd. "Is THE BIBLE INSPIRED?"—The Rev H. T. Cousins, F.R.G.S., intends (D.V.) preaching next Sunday evening, February 25th, on the above sub- ject, in the English Baptist Church at Colwyn Bay. Service will commence at half-past six. All seats are free and unappropriated, and hymn books are provided. THE WELSH WESLEYANS' MISCELLANEOUS EN- TERTAINMENT.—A miscellaneous entertaniment was held, at the Welsh Wesleyan Chapel, Colwyn Bay, on Wednesday evening, February 14th, Mr J. Berth Jones in the chair. The programme opened with a pianoforte solo, "Charming Gavotte," by Miss Bland, followed by a song, "The Better Land," by Miss Davies. Mr Evans followed with "Mi gollais y tren," for which he was encored. Messrs Evans and Jones gave a charming rendering of the duett "Arwyr Cymru Fydd." The song, "We'd better bide a'wee," by Mr Bland, was well rendered. Miss Nellie Ann Roberts scored well with "Fe ddaw Llewelyn eto'n ol." One of the noteworthy items was the admirable way in which little Miss Winnie Bland sang "The very worst girl in the school," and for this she received a hearty encore, to which she responded. Mr Llew Jones sang "Y Bugail," and Miss Davies favoured the audience with "The gift," after which Master Hughes fairly took the audience with a welsh recitation "Ni chew'ch fy nhwyllo i," and had to re-appear. Mr Bland sang "The gypsy's warning" which was followed by "Y bachgen dewr," rendered by Mr E. C. Evans, Colwyn. An impromptu speech competition took place, but not one of the com- petitors was considered worthy of the prize. Mr Evans then sang Gwnewch pobpeth yn Gymraeg," and was well received. Mr Llew Jones having sung "Hiraeth," the meeting, which was a decided success, ended with Mr E. C. Evans's singing of the Welsh National Anthem. RYDAL MOUNT (BOYS' XI.) v LLANDUDNO COL- LEGIATE.—Payed at Llandudno, on Thursday, Feb. 15th, resulting in a win for Rydal Mount by 4 to nil. The home team, which contained two mas- ters, held their own for the first few minutes of the game, but it was soon apparent that, although they had a very fair defence, there was little or no danger to be apprehended from the Collegiate attack; the centre-forward showed promising play, but never knew where to look for support. Simpson, in the same position for the visitors, could always rely on his wings, and his passing- out to them, was the best feature of his display; he was scarcely vigorous enough in the first half, and misled the other forwards into lying too far back, so that the Collegiate goal-keeper always had heaps of time to clear away. In the second half, Rydal had too much of the game to give a good exhibition, especially on so very narrow a ground. Lewis was tricky and fast, and Green- halgh fed him well, beside playing with consider- able dash himself. The right wing was not so good, though Osborn got an excellent goal, the other three points being obtained by Lewis (2) and Greenhalgh. Of three fair half-backs, Mars- den was most useful, and Raby quite outshone Nicholson, who was very poor. Rogers did not make a single mistake. Rydal Mount: S. J. Rogers (goal); S. Raby and J. A. Nicholson (backs); A. Whitehouse, A. C. F. Osborn (right); F. W. Simpson (centre); A. J. Greenhalgh, W. P. Lewis (left); N. R. Frith, W. A. Melling, and A. Marsden (half-backs). RYDAL MOUNT v FRIARS.-Played at Bangor, on Saturday, February 17th, resulting in a win for Rydal Mount by 6 goals to 2. Both Schools were represented by boys' elevens. Friars de- fended the School goal, and there was little to choose between the teams in the first half of the game. Play was fast, the ball travelling con- stantly from goal to goal, and Rogers had more to kick out than the opposing custodian. The home defence was sound, the backs kicking very strongly; and the centre-half headed and tackled well, but Rydal had better combination in front, and Simpson played a smart game, letting his wings work the ball up, and shooting strongly from a distance, a policy which paid well, as the ball was greasy, the ground slippery, and the Friars' goal-keeper slow. A re-arrangement of the home forwards at half-time produced a better attack on their part, but they were both unlucky and unskilful in shooting, and Rogers was only beaten twice out of numerous attempts. The visitors, on the other hand, were always good in front of the goal, and Simpson shot five excellent goals, leaving one to the credit of Lewis. The last-named was the best wing-forward on the ground, though Whitehouse deserves special notice. The Rydal halves were good, Marsden for once being somewhat behind his partners. Raby was as good a back as there was playing, which is giving him high praise. For Friars, the small left-wing pair deserve great credit, and Eames also stuck to the attack manfully. The homesters were unfortunate in losing the services of one or two good men, while the Rydal boys were the strongest lot available, their eleven consisting of the same players as those who met Llandudno Collegiate on the previous Thursday. THE REV W. VENABLES-WILLIAMS AND HIS BISHOP. On Sunday morning, February 18th, the Rev W. Venables-Williams, M.A. (Oxon.), J.P., at the Morning Service at Llandrillo Church, referred to the monition which had been served upon him, and to which the reverend gentleman alluded to in his letter which appeared in The Liverpool Courier of February 16th. The statement he made on Sunday was as follows This is to give notice that I have received from the Bishop of St. Asaph a monition (a copy of which was served on the Churchwardens), requiring me on every Sunday and Holy Day throughout the year to perform one full service, with sermon, in the Welsh language, and one full service, with sermon, in the English language, and further requesting me to give notice on the first Sunday (which is to-day), after receiving the document, of the hour at which such services will be performed. In compliance with that requirement, under section 2 of the Pluralities Act Amendment Act, 1885, I hereby give public notice that there will be full Welsh service, with sermon, in this Church every Sunday morning at 9.30, and English service, with sermon, at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m., the same to commence on Sunday, March 4th. It is much to be regretted that, apparently with the sole object of embittering the relationship (already severly strained) between the Bishop and myself, any one in this Parish should have made a formal complaint to the Bishop of an alleged dereliction of duty on my part, and on my inquiring who the informer was the only answer I received was the above-named monition by return of post. It would have been much better that a complaint should have been addressed in the first instance to myself or the Churchwardens. My own earnest request and wish is that the Bishop will issue forthwith a commission under section 3 of the same Act (Pluralities Act Amendment Act, 1885) for the purpose of holding a public and thorough inquiry as to whether there is an inadequate performance of the duties of this Parish.' This course is only fair to the parishioners and myself: therefore I have a right to demand it." The Vicar's statement caused considerable sensation among those present. MR J. HERBERT ROBERTS, M.P., AT COLWYN BAY. REPLY TO THE BISHOP OF ST. ASAPH. SPEECHES BY THE REV THOMAS LLOYD AND MR JAMES WOOD. A crowded and enthusiastic meeting of the constituents of Mr J. Herbert Roberts, M.P., was held on Friday evening, February 16th, in the Public Hall, Colwyn Bay, the Member for West Denbighshire himself being present. The Rev Thomas Lloyd, Congregational Minister, presided, and was supported on the platform by the Revs Thomas Parry, C.C., H. T. Cousins, F.R.G.S., J. Kelly, and Owen Evans, and by Messrs James Wood, John Roberts, and Moses Williams. Among the audience were a large number of Churchmen and Conservatives, prominent among whom were the Revs Canon Hugh Roberts, and Meredith Hughes, respectively the Vicar and Senior Curate of St Paul's and the Vicar of Dolwyddelen. In opening the meeting, the Chairman said,- Mr Herbert Roberts and fellow-townsmen, let me first of all say to you, sir, in the name of the meeting,—which I am confident I may do,—that we are very glad to see you with us to-night, and that we give you our heartiest welcome. (Cheers). We are proud of you (Cheers), of the services you have already rendered us, and of the greater services we are confident that you will yet render, not only to us in this constituency, but to the whole of Wales (Loud cheers); not only to us as Liberals and Nonconformists, but toevety Welsh- men, to the whole of the Principality (Cheers) services that will stand side by side of those of your honoured father (Renewed cheers), services which have affected every class of people through- out Wales (Hear, hear). I am glad of (and grateful to the friends, for the honour of) presiding at this meeting to-night. It is hardly necessary for me to say that the reason for this meeting at this particular time is to be found in the meeting held here last Monday night (Cheers). But let me say at the outset that we don't wish to conduct this meeting on the same principle as that meeting was conducted. (A voice I should think not," and laughter and cheers). This time we have engaged the Hall (Cheers), but I must confess that we have not "worked up" the meeting (Hear, hear); we have sent no handbills round from house to house,-we have only posted a few placards. And I wish to say to our worthy friend Canon Roberts, that, when a question that touches Nonconformists and Disestablishment is before the public, it is not necessary to "work up any meeting in this place (Loud cheers). If there is any townsman present here to-night, who would like to speak against the resolution or resolutions that may be submitted to the meeting, I think I may promise in the name of the platform, that he will be allowed to speak, and will have a fair hearing. Let it be fully understood that we will give him a fair hearing (Applause).—Address- ing the audience particularly, Mr Lloyd said,- "You will give a fair hearing to any townsman, won't you ? (Cries of "Yes.") Proceeding, Mr Lloyd said, "Nothing can be fairer than that, but, for the sake of order and convenience, I must ask that anyone wishing to speak for or against the resolutions, will please send up his name to me, that I may arrange matters (hear, hear). I am strongly in favor of free speech, as I am in favour of a free Press (Applause). Those are some of the prizes for which we, as Nonconform- ists, have fought and bled for which our fathers have rotted in dungeons and died on scaffolds, and what we claim for ourselves we will never deny to others (Loud applause). I wish to make one or two references to the meeting of Monday night (Cheers). The Bishop of St Asaph said that he wished to make his humble protest against several things. I wish to make my humble protest also against one or two things (Cheers). And here I will ask the lads here if they will favor us by not whistling (Hear, hear). I protest against being invited to a meeting called under a false name (Cheers). On the bills sent round, and on the platform tickets sent to some Nonconform- ists, we were told that the Bishop of St Asaph and the Rev Robert Williams, were to deliver lectures on the "History of the Church in Wales" (Ironical laughter). Now, I ask, is it possible, by any stretch of language, honestly to call the rambling remarks of the Bishop "A History of the Church in Wales?" (Cries of "No.") Would it not be more correct to describe it as an attack on the truthfulness and honesty of Nonconformists ? (Hear, hear). I have a book at home called Pearson on the Creed. A considerable portion of the Bishop's address might be called Edwards on the Constitution of the Calvinistic Methodists (Great laughter, and cheers). I am fond of history, and I came here on Monday expecting to hear a little of the "History of the Church in Wales." Had I known it was to have been a Church Defence meeting of the usual type, I should have probably employed my time to a better purpose (Hear, hear). Canon Roberts, accompanied by the Revs Meredith Hughes and Robert Williams here made their way through the crowded audience, amid loud cheers, and, either disregarding or not seeing the waving of the Chairman's hands inviting them to seats on the platform, proceeded to take their seats at and near the reporters' table. Proceeding, the Chairman said, "It is true that Mr Williams, the next morning, made some excuses for the Bishop on the ground that he had not had time to prepare (Derisive laughter). Now, is it not true that the meeting was arranged fully a month before-hand ? (Cries of "Yes.") As to Mr Williams's speech, that was a piece of historical fiction (Laughter) ingeniously interwoven with a few facts (Loud laughter). I protest further against the attempt made to wilfully misrepresent the feeling of the meeting (Loud cheers). We believe in giving those of a different creed to ourselves, a fair opportunity of stating their views (hearhear), without further interruption than an expression of disagreement (Hear, hear). But the Bishop, and (I am sorry to say) Canon Roberts, have made that—I will not say im- possible, but-vel y difficult for the future (Hear, hear). When the Bishop was speaking, and the interruption was less boisterous than it became later on, here and there were heard expressions of dissent, and the Bishop made a remark to this effect, I am glad of those two or three expressions of dissent; they emphasise the general consent of the audience. Now, if our opponents believe, and proclaim to the public, that a courteous hearing is to be taken as a sign of agreement with what is said, then they leave an audience that is not in sympathy with them, no alternative but the most persistent interruption. Acting on this principle, every public meeting where there is a difference of opinion, must become a scene of tumult (Hear, hear). Surely it was not wise of the Bishop to bring such a fire- brand into our midst (Cheers). But Canon Roberts, I fear, has made even a greater mistake. In his telegram to The Liverpool Courier on Tuesday, he asserts that on previous occasions the promoters of meetings of a contentious character, had been swept from the platform, but this could not be done on Monday night." It is unwise,-it is dangerous, nay, it is morally wrong, to place a public audience in this difficult position, —to sav to them in effect, If you don't come forward and sweep us off the platform, it is a clear proof that you cannot do it (Laughter). Nay, but rather let it be recognised, as a fundamental principle in all our public meetings, that an audience may disagree with a speaker, though the meeting may not be thrown into a tumult of disorder (Hear, hear), and that the numerical and moral strength of an audience may be greater than that of the promoters of the meeting, even though the promoters be not swept off the platform (Loud cheers). I wish to make one more protest. It is against the assertion which the Bishop made,—and which is commonly made by the supporters of the Anglican Church, to the effect that spiritually-minded Nonconform- ists, do not care for Disestablishment that those who labour for Disestablishment are political agitators, and nothing more. Was not the late Dr Saunders, of Swansea, a spiritually-minded man rather than a political agitator ? Was the late Dr Matthews, of Cardiff, merely a political agitator? What are we to think of our illustrious dead, who longed and laboured for this, but died not having seen it? Are we to submit quietly and silently, when we are told that the men we have loved, whose words have been light and life to thousands in Wales,—are we to be silent when we are told that these men, who have been the prophets of God in our midst, were not spiritually- minded, but agitators? (No). What about Henry Rees, and Gwilym Hiraethog? (Cheers). What about the brothers, Drs Owen and John Thomas, of Liverpool? (Cheers). I refrain from mentioning the names of the living, and yet there are to be found spiritually-minded Nonconformists in the fight for Disestablishment (Cheers). Were not these spiritually-minded men ? And yet no men live who did more to forward and promote the Disestablishment of the Church, than those I have named (Cheers). The Bishop made a great deal of the fact that some Nonconformist told him that he would not vote for Disestablishment, if he thought that, by so doing, he would be disloyal to Christ. The implication is that we can't labour and vote for Disestablishment, without being disloyal to Christ. The thing appears to me in a totally different light (Cheers). My chief motive for seeking Disestablishment is that I can't be loyal to Christ without this work (Loud and continued cheering). To me, the system is wrong, and I am bound to set my face against it (Cheers). Some of us don't like fighting (A laugh). I would much prefer being at home, and nothing but my duty to my Lord and Master would call upon me to take up this work (Ap- plause). No, my brothers we feel that we are loyal to Christ, and it is that very loyalty, for which Nonconformists in every age have perished rather than give it up, that is the great power that will bring Disestablishment to pass (Loud cheers). The Chairman, after the cheers had subsided, called upon Mr J. Herbert Roberts to address the meeting. Mr Roberts, who was most enthusiastically received, expressed his pleasure at having the opportunity of visiting and addressing his constit- uents at Colwyn Bay. It was necessary, however, to explain that the time of the meeting was not of his own choosing, but was determined by what had taken place at that Hall on the Monday. Under thè disguise of an historical lecture upon the Church, an opportunity had been taken bv the Bishop of St Asaph to make certain serious charges against him (Mr Roberts), and, because those charges required an answer, he was there that evening to meet them, and, he hoped, to clear himself in the eyes of his constituents (Cheers). He could not but regret that the Bishop had taken that course, for there were circumstances at Colwyn Bay which he was well aware of, and for which he (the Bishop) was responsible, which had created a very bitter feeling in the neighbourhood, and the dictates of common sense as well as of policy ought to have deterred him from emphasising by his presence the already disturbed and dissatisfied condition of public opinion at Colwyn Bay (Hear, hear). Reverting to the charges made against him by the Bishop, Mr Roberts said that His Lordship had made the same charges in the Press and had been completely answered by him in the papers but the Bishop, evidently fearing lest the effect of his attack upon him in the Press should by any mischance reach the ears of his constituents, arranged that inoffensive gath- ering known as an "historical lecture" (Laughter) (which reminded him of the poet's description of that mildest mannered man that ever cut a throat") in order to attack and discredit their representatives in Parliament. The charges made against him referred to two matters, the Llangernyw petition against the Suspensory Bill, and the Ellis Davies Charity at Cerrigydruidion. Dealing with these points, Mr Roberts said I referred to the question of petitions at Denbigh in October last. I called attention to the fact of the general complaint from all parts at the action of the Church Party in
