( Continued from the ath page,) THE NEWPORT BRITISH SCHOOLS.—On Friday evening, the 31th ult., the above schools were examined at the girls' school- room, Llanarth-street. The examination was conducted by different gentlemen present, who expressed their entire satis- faction with the progress of the pupils, and the readiness with which they answered the questions put to them by the different examiners. Credit is due to the master and the mistresses for their perseverance, and the thanks of the meeting were accorded them. The children were examined in the English grammar, geography, arithmetic, history, &c., and were addressed by- Mr." Salter, the Rev. Mr. Allen, and others. POLICE, MONDAY, JULY 3rd.—(Before the Mayor, W. Jenkins, and Thas. Hughes, Esqrs.)—■Jeremy Harrington was brought up on suspicion of stealing- a quantity of iron. No owner being found, lie was dlschargccL-Ann Edwards- and Catherine-Nicholas, for being drunk and disorderly. The old customer, Ann Edwards, was fined 5s., and the other discharged. Ellen Hopkins- was charged with stealing a handkerchief and 2s. from J. Bailey, labourer. Bailey not appearing, she was discharged. Richard Lovrin, for be- ing drunk and disorderly, and assaulting P.C. Long. Pined 5sf John Grace, for assaulting Ellis Bailey. Fined Is., and 13s. 6d. costs. Aaron Halhnan, charged by Mr. Day with obtaining one sack of potatoes under false pretences. Ordered to settle with Mr. Day.

EllIDG-EN D. THE contest for the coroncrship terminated on Saturday Yenillg by the resignation of Mr. Russell. Ou Monday Mr. Evans, the Deputy-Sheriff, officially declared the following to be the state of the poll:- Overton 218G, BosseS 2, Roberts 331 Mr. Overton, therefore, had a majority of 120. The usual ■oaths were administered to him, after which the learned gentleman thanked the electors for their kindness, and pro- mised to serve them faithfully^ We have been told that the contest cost from £ 4,000 to £ 5,000.

ABKRDARE. TTTESBAY, the itli inst., was a merry day in Aberdaro, occa- sioned by the union of two young friends, much respected by the inhabitants generally. Early in the morning Richard Fo- thergill, Esq., was united in the bonds of matrimony to Miss E. Lewis, the- daughter of E. Lewis,. Esq., of C'annal House. The wedding party proceeded to church in three carriages. After the celebration of the marriage by the Rev. J. Griffith, M. A., the party returned to the bride's father's from thence the young couple proceeded to Cardiff, on their way to London. We perceived" amongst others forming the wedding party R-iwland Fother^ill, "Esq., the respected uncle of tle-I)ride- #voom, and amongst the hundreds of lookers-on,, we saw C„. MONEY MARKET. LONDON., WEDNESDAY EVENING. » The Money Market has undergone a change which has brought the English funds to-a higher quotation than they have arrived at since the events of February last. On Saturday they rose nearly 1 per cent. and advanced another figure higher on Tuesday. The cause of this is the new financial statement of the Chancellor of the Exchequer, coupled with the accounts of the formation of the Cavaignac Ministry in Paris, the reported arrangements for peace between the Danes and the German Confederation, and the selec- tion of the Archduke John of Austria as the head of the. German'c Confederation. The Funds are extremely buoyant again to-day, and the speculation strongly in.favour of enhanced prices. REMARKS.—Iron continues without alteration, except Scotch pigs, which are a shade better, in consequence of shipments to the United States. Banca tin is 2s. lower, and lead about 10s. per ton lower since last week; and quicksilver is reduced to 3s. 6d. per lb. With these exceptions, there is nothing new in the metal market to notice. BIRMINGHAM, FRIDAY.—The iron trade of this district is in a most depressed state at a preliminary meeting of the ironmasters, held at Stewponey this day, it was resolved to reduce the price 30s. per ton for the next quarter.

GLASGOW PIG-IRON TRADE. JUNE 29TH,—The continuation of disturbances in various parts of the continent, and the recent outbreak in Paris, as might otherwise have been expected, have had no visible effect on our pig-iron mar- ket. The tendency, since date of our last, has rather, on the con- trary, been for a rise. This may in part be accounted for from the continuation of extensive shipments of the article to the United States—the low price enabling the orders from that country to be executed. No. I Gartsherrie brand has been a good deal in demand, and has brought 44s.—cash. The price of mixed numbers, good brands, may be quoted at13s. to 43s. 6d.—-cash, free on board here. LONDON CORN EXCHANGE. MONDAY, JULY 3.—English Wheat was scarce to-day, and fine samples 18. to 2s. per qr. dearer than this day se'nnight. We had more buyers of foreign Wheat, which sold at fully Is, advance, particularly middling and inferior sorts, for shipping coastwise. Flour continues dull sale. Foreign Barley met more demand, at fully last week's prices. Fine Malts were scarce and would fetch better prices, but inferior sorts almost unsaleable. Beans went off very slowly, and rather cheaper, unless dry and hard. In Peas hut little doing. The Oat trade was heavy for inferior qualities, but the best fresh samples fully maintained last Monday's prices. Lin- seed was dull and rather cheaper, but Cakes scarce and more inquired after. LIVERPOOL CORN EXCHANGE. TUESDAY, JULY 4.—At this day's market there was a better attendance of town and country dealers, and a. good show of most descriptions of Wheat, but small of other article?. The trade was probably infiucncedby the favourable change in the weather, which counteracting the effects- of the advance in London and the agricul- tural markets, the demand for Wheat was less limited than was expected. There was very little inquiry for Oats and Oatmeal, and prices were barely supported.. There is. no Barley here. Beans, with a moderate demand', realised previous rates and Peas for feed- ing purposes were in rather more request.

BRISTOL, JULY i.-It is well known that a majority of the town council, with a partiality characteristic of the old domi- nant party in this city, recently decided on parting with some corporation property for the purpose of building a Church thereon, at a price about one-half its estimated value. The same collective wisdom" has long ago decided that the Dis- senters of Ilinton shall not have another portion of the corpo- ration land for the purpose of building a meeting house thereon, even at the highest valuation. The liberal minority of the Council very proparly resolved on memoralizing the Lords of ..the Treasury on t is unjustifiable act of the Church majority; and we understand the consequence has been an injunction from the Lords aforesaid, forbidding the town council to carry out their dishonest resolution. We need not add that this authoritative document, which arrived to- day, has proved a bitter pill to our would-be lords and masters, the high Church Tories. rADYEiiTi.SEMENT.]—The Standard of Freedom was unfurled OIl Saturday, July 1, with a success triumphant and almost unprecedented in the history of the Newspaper Press. The Standard of Freedom, price Fourpence-halfpenny, is a Newspaper of the largest size allowed by law, and will contain, on Saturday next, among other interesting and important News, the Debates in the House of Commons on Thursday night on Mr. Hume's motion for .Parliamentary Reform with articles upon the great questions of Freedom, Political, Commercial, and Religious and all the news of the week. The First Edition of the Standard of Pree- dom is published on Friday evening, in time for delivery in the Provinces early on Saturday morning.
