( Continued from the ath page,) THE NEWPORT BRITISH SCHOOLS.—On Friday evening, the 31th ult., the above schools were examined at the girls' school- room, Llanarth-street. The examination was conducted by different gentlemen present, who expressed their entire satis- faction with the progress of the pupils, and the readiness with which they answered the questions put to them by the different examiners. Credit is due to the master and the mistresses for their perseverance, and the thanks of the meeting were accorded them. The children were examined in the English grammar, geography, arithmetic, history, &c., and were addressed by- Mr." Salter, the Rev. Mr. Allen, and others. POLICE, MONDAY, JULY 3rd.—(Before the Mayor, W. Jenkins, and Thas. Hughes, Esqrs.)—■Jeremy Harrington was brought up on suspicion of stealing- a quantity of iron. No owner being found, lie was dlschargccL-Ann Edwards- and Catherine-Nicholas, for being drunk and disorderly. The old customer, Ann Edwards, was fined 5s., and the other discharged. Ellen Hopkins- was charged with stealing a handkerchief and 2s. from J. Bailey, labourer. Bailey not appearing, she was discharged. Richard Lovrin, for be- ing drunk and disorderly, and assaulting P.C. Long. Pined 5sf John Grace, for assaulting Ellis Bailey. Fined Is., and 13s. 6d. costs. Aaron Halhnan, charged by Mr. Day with obtaining one sack of potatoes under false pretences. Ordered to settle with Mr. Day.
