There are many fanciers in our midst, and | even if no outsiders exhibited, the show would pro- | bably be large and exceedingly inteiesting. There is scarcely a town anywhere the size of Penartb, which j can boast so many pigeon fanciers, and it is to be re- j gletted that they have not, se far, exhibited their | fancies, for they po&sess some excellent specimens of | show bird fl. However there is a flyi-ag club here, i and many trophies have been won by the members. j We hope now that the ball has been set rolling it will be pushed on and on, and that next year will see j established a strong society for the encouragement of I bird fanciers generally.

Volunteer Intelligenca. HOW CAPTAIN BRAIN'S DETACHMENT LOSI THE QUEENS PRIZE. At the Ship Hotel Penarth, on Wednesday night, Cap'c S. A. Brain, (commanding officer of the ^nd Glamorgan A. V. detachmentat the recent Shoebary- Mess meeting,) invited his company, numbering 60, to a banquet, which Host Lewis catered for, in his usual satisfactory style. Among the officers present were y 11 Colonel H 0 Fisher, Commander of the detachment, Lieu. Colonel E C Fry, iN,Iaj r Fleming Thomas, Captain W Gasgoyne Dal5iel, J J H-mdcock, W Stal- ly brass, Wilkinson, Dest, A Shepherd, Lieut, Pynaan, and Sergeant Majors Attwell H.A., (of the headquar- ter Staff) and Daly R.A., local Instructor. The post prandial proceedings were presided over by Captain Brain, the vice- chairmanship being vested in Majors Attwell and Daly. After the loyal tca-t. Colonel Fisher in a happy speech referred to his inclebtedness to Captain Brain, who had relieved him of the onorous camp commandacy. AI, hough he (the sp aker) had a severe cold yet he had com over that night ir o derto thank Captain Brain, and t) dunk his health (cfceara and musical honour) 'ihj gallant Colonel also expressed a hope that the Queen's Prize would be secured by his men in the near future. (Hear. bear). Captain Brain in responding, said that the detach- ment had an enviable prestage, and he did not think the Company had made a single enemy at Shoebury- ness. They had been cheered to the echo when they had come forward to receive their prizes, the shouts being, "Good Old Wales, Good old Glamorgan." Their reputation was s cond to none, and he was, therefore, exceedingly proud, and felt that his heart was as big as a beer barrel (Laughter) In adverting to the Queens Prize, Captain Bruin said his company 4- with 19 others out of 48 had been disqualified. They had, when up there, to drtll on a gun they had never seen before, and knew nothing about it. He was in London a fortniggt ago making representations to the War Depot of this injustice to provincial artillery men. The prizes happily secured at Shoeburyness were Company Sergeant Wakeham (Barry), single 64 pounder competition, 1st prize £30, 2nd prize, Sergt. Hailet 2nd detachment Penartb, 64 pounder, £20, and 4th prize, Duke of Cambridge Cup. These were presented to the recipients and the rest of the even- ing was given up to conviviality.
