WAITING! The elections are over, and the people throughout the United Kingdom are waiting to see what will follow. The Conservatives have been, by the voice of the country, called upon to take the reins of office, and there is an anxiety, born of curiosity, to see what Lord Salisbury will provi(V for his big elephant," or how he will proceed co feed it. Having such an overwhelming majority at his back in both Houses, there will be little difficulty in carrying through, successfully, every measure proposed, and it is only a question as to what will be the character of the measures brought forward. We have faith to believe that even some of the Bills brought in by the late Government, and which were defeated, will, after slight modifications, be re-introduced, and ultimately placed upon our. country's statute book, to the credit of the Tory Government, when, in reality, the late Liberal Government designed and planned the main details. We say we have faith to believe that this will be the case, but we must nevertheless wait, and watch, and hope. The majority of Conservati ves which which have been returned will enable Lord Salisbury to snap his fingers at those gentlemen who still call them-' selves Liberal Unionists and we do not hesitate to predict 'that some of these latter will, ere long, be again found fighting under the Liberal banner. They seceded, from the Liberal party on c ie question, and one question only. But will the back bone of Liberalism show itself when other questions', questions which will favour the nobility and landed propriety of our country, may be under discussion. We believe it will, but. we must wait and watch, and hope. The House will soon meet, and then the attention of the whole world will be directed to the strange assembly. Strange assembly did we say ? Yes, in that many will occupy positions into which they have been thrust by their opponents. Thousands of Liberals have suddenly been afficted with that fearful malady —temporary insanity, and now in the still hour, after the excitement has passed, and they quietly and calmly think of what has been done, they re- proach themselves for their lack of stability and faithfulness !o the good old cause which has showered upon them so many blessings. As a speaker at the Liberal meeting on Wednesday night put it, It is just now spring tide with our opponents, but already it has begun to go back." Whilst in some respects we regret the reverse which the Liberal party has sustained, yet we nevertheless believe it will provt, a blessing in disguise. Nsver before has the Liberal party been found so disorganised, and nsver have the i leaders been so stirred to determined Action. A break has been applied to the wheels of progress; for a time
