He was born at Lindal, near Barrow-m-Furness. At an early age he went to sea as an apprentice, and for many vears he was sailing to foreign parts. When about 24 years of age he was passing Holy- head in a ship, and during a storm he sus- tained a fracture of the arm and was landed at Holyhead and sent to the hospital. On recovering and being able to resume work he joined the L. and N. W. steamers, plying I between Holyhead and Dublin. At that time the boats were small, and Mr Walms- ley witnessed great changes in the service. lie was an officer on board the. express pas- senger steamer "Hibernia" coning from Dublin on that illfated day when the "Primrose Hill" perished after Captain Clay had stood bv her for some time but found it impossible to render aid. W hen a boy he learnt the Manx language fron Manx miners that had settled in Lindal, and later, when trading abroad, he dis- played great ability as a linguist. He was married to a Holyhead lady, and very rapidly acquired a knowledge of Welsh, being able- to speak the language fluently. The cause of his death was blood poisoning. He was 68 years of age. TEiE PIER MYiSTERY. — On Thursday afternoon Mr R. Jones Roberts, coroner for Anglesey, held an inquest at the mortuary, on the body of a female child which was picked from the sea in the vicinity of the Admiralty Pier on Wednesday afternoon. Mr Jones, Bon Marche, was foreman of the jury.—Mr John Hughes, Ty Capel, Llain- goch. said he found the body floating under the mail jetty about 2.40 on Wednesday afternoon. -Mr Johns (a juryman) Had it any clothing?—No, it was quite naked.' Sergeant Henry Roberts said the body was that of a female child — In summing up, the Coroner said that so far tlie police had been unable to trace the child's mother. It was possible that the body had been thrown into the water from a steamer, but, of course, they could not tell. If traced, the mother could be pro- ceeded against for concealment of birth, this being the course usually adopted when a difficulty was experienced in proving that the dhild was murdered. He himself had no hesitation in saying it was not a case where medical evidence should be obtained, as it could be of no assistance to them in tmv way. and it would be putting the coun- ty'to needless expense. It would be wrong for him to obtain such evidence unless it would be of materiaJ assistance. It was, therefore, in his opinion, uteless to hold a post mortem examination. The Deputv (Thief Conf table (Supt. Prothero) agreed that that was the best course.—Mr Johns To me the face looks very hladc-l do ioz. know if it becomes bla,cl! after being in the water. It looks more like strangula- tion. and that the body was thrown into the water afterwards.—A verdict of "Found dead" was returned.

BONTNEWYQD
BONTNEWYQD SCROrOL, RL'iORT.—Alx L. J. Robert* report on the Bontnewydd schools—the first that has been read since the erection of the building—states:—"It is a .great pleasure to visit this school, so admirable are the school buildings, eo complete is the equip- ment, so wide and varied; is the curriculum and so resourceful and intelligent is the teaching. The rooms internally are made attractive by means of pict-urts, of mottoes and of fresh flowers—whic.h are always to be found on the school talbles and windows —all of which unfailingly tend to have a. refining influence upon the children. The pljaygrouaids are decorated with ibeds oi flowers and shru'be. In the completeness of Its equipment the school is a model one. It has premises admirtaibIy designed for in- struction in handicraft, and in cookery and laundry. There is a large school garden, which not only pays its way, but is of direct and marked educational value, especially as it is used by all classes in the' school for purposes of observation in nature study. There is a school library with about 550 volumes, in English and in Welsh,, about hali of which ha.ve been presented by Sir Owen Roberts, a generous friend of the school in many ways; for in addition to the library books he has presented to the school a book case, a lantern (with apparatus and slides), and a flagstaff. The school ie in- deed fortunate in having generous friends, such as Sir Owen Roberts, the Victar (the Rev D. L. Wrilliams), and Mr T. E. Ro- berts, the last-mentioned of whom not only gives prizes for essays, etc., but has re- cently presented the school with a most I valuable and artistic honours' board. A second lantern (with slides and apparatus) has quite lately been given to tfe school bv an old pupil of the headmaster. The school managers pay fcr the rent of a field ,for football, and organised games. The tone of the school is excellent. The curri- culum is unusually wide. In addition to the usual school subjects and handicraft, cookery, laundry, and1 gardening, sutch sub- jects as shorthand and book-keeping are included for the older children.. A specially interesting feature of the instruction is the which is made of lantern illustrations in the teaching of geography and history. A series of lantern1 lectures on. such sub- jects as Snowdonia, the Lake District, Shakespeare's country, is regularly given. Due attention is given to the teaching of hvig'ienle a-iUdi temperance. The infante' mip.tress might well have some helo; for though the number of children under her care is not very large, she has three classes to teach, consisting of children of widely- varying aititainmenits'. She makes the in- clafteScfarn ibn^jhi land •chee.nful by means of flowers and pictures. The atten- dance at the school is remarkable. Per the last school year the average attendance ex- ceeded 99 per cent. At mv visit 177 out of the 178 children on the books were pro sent. one boy beincr absent through illness. Th. one drawback in the school is the want of a water suppL'- This wa.nt should be supplied."—The school is at present und°r the control of Mr G. R. Hughes. Bethel. Mr W. J. Williams having) been given thre° months,' leave of absence owing: to a break town in health.' Mr Hughes' own ■school -at Bethel is undergoing structural alterations.
