. CARNARVON AS A VISITORS'…
CARNARVON AS A VISITORS' RESORT There are quite a number of towns and villages' in North Wales which deserve to be much more widely known as holiday resorts. Rhyl, Oolwyn Bay, and Llandudno are al- ready advertised exibaneiv-ely, and -well patronised, but there iare other centres which ought to 'benefit to a much greater extent than is at present tihe case from the annual influx of summer visitors; and at a time when the whole district is becoming less and lees dependent upon the slalte trade we should look for fresh sources of revenue and endeavour to make up for the loss suffered in consequence of the continued depression in our staple industry. Tihe old town of Carnarvon, for instance, has special attractions for visitors and as a touring centre it is unrivalled, but so long as its claims in this respect remain un- known to the world, so long shall we have to deplore the fewness of our visitors. (Last yeai the Town IGouncil inserted a two-line advertisement in a halfpenny paper, evi- dently forgetful of the fact that the class of visitors to whom Carnarvon's attractions would appeal is not the class who read, the halfpenny dailies. It would have been far wiser to epend a few shillings more if by that means the right class of people could ibe reached. Injudicious advertising means money thrown away. Carnarvon's beautiful (surroundings are not its least attractive features, and means should be found for bringing ithe pretty spots of the neighibourhooJ within easier reach of the town. The suggested trips IboBelan are to be commended, in that they should jmaiterialily assist in (popularising IDinas Dinlle &nd in making the attractions of the Aber shore better known. It has been sug- gested that a tramline similar to that which. joins Uanbedrog to Pwllheli should be con- structed a!'onig the Aber shore in the direc- tion cti Dinas. Dinlle, crossing the Foryd by Imeaais of a wooden bridge. It may be argued that only a Solomon Andrews could make the scheme remunerative, but we see no (reason why a syndicate of Carnarvon business men could not succeed. There are hundreds of people in the town itself who w ould gladdy itake advantage of many a halif- holiday at Dinas Dinlle if trams could be run thither, while the attractions oi (Car- narvon "as ja- visitors' .report iwjoulkl !bfe; greatly enhanced by the fact that suich a pleasant outing could be 'had from the town. Other attractions, such as golf links, are badly needed, but it is to be feared that the spirit of enterprise which is the soul of success has too long lain dormant, though there are indications of its revival in the effort to construct a 'light railway in Angle- sey and in one or two other local movements. Nothing is more obvious than the ifact that the old town has natural resources of a very exceptional character, and if properly de- veloped they would, become very valuable municipal assete. I

Carnarvcmsh'te Coniser,\lat'.ves are doing the cause no good by their outburst of party jealousy at the County Council meet'ngs. It As mot very long since Mr. hsard Davies pro- tested against congrlaitu'-ating Mr. Lloyd George when he saved the country from a calamity of a railway strike; now, aigar'n, the same tactics are pursued when the Council wishes to congratulate h'kn upen an- I other noteworthy achievement. It is only too evident that party jea'ou-y :s the cause of these protests, for Mri. Lloyd-George's of these protests, for Mri. Lloyd-George's remarkable career s nee his promotion to office has made the Conservative Party's I prospect-s in the constituency gloomjier than ever. A public body may surely congratulate one of its own members upon an auspiaous occasion without having to deal with the I party tactics of one or two malcontents. I

You are to have a new (Welsh member (writes a correspondent) in Mr. Alfred; Mond. member of Parliament for Chester j (of Brunner, Mond, and Cotmpainy), who has been invited to stand ait the general election for Swansea. Mr. Mond is a remarkable man in many ways, :and will be a tower of strength to the Welsh Party. Apart from his great wealth, he is very clefver, an earnest and convinced RJadCteaJl, and should' go far. An ideali member for a great industrial and mercantile constituency, he leaves Chester amid the regret of the liberals there as a. whole. Illis rembrkaibtlie victory over Mr. Yerburgh, a-t the alaist election, waa not the loos-t astomtshimg incident in a career which- is only just begajtoring, for Mr. Mond is still an the right side of 40. He will! be sound 1 on both the Church and land questions, and on all other clauses of the Radical pro- gramme., I vejnture to predict that ten t years hence he wil be the guide, colUlsellor I and friend oi the Welsh Party, as was Lord I Rendel, only with twice his Lordship's zeal and enthusiasm. The Anglesey Compensation Authority has more than utilised all the money at its dis- posal for paying off licenses, and jg, iwe iearn to borrow a further £ 5,000 to meet the lia- bilities already incurred under Mr Balfour's Act of 1904. Those interested in the licenses which are to receive compensation have certainly no grounds to complain that they have been treated in a niggardly way. As Mr Lloyd-George pointed out in his Budget speech, license values are computed at three or foltir times the rate of other businesses, and hence we have the Anglesey Authoritv awarding J31,125 in the case of the Railway Inn, Gaerwen, where the nett profits from all sources amounted to only B150 per an- num. The case is a peculiar one, as the owner of the house owns a licensed house a few yards away, and could easily transfer* j his posting, and perhaps his other business to the remaining one. As the licensed trade ) has to pay, the public will not complain on I that score, though members of the trade will be compelled for some years to come to pay the full levy to the Compensation Fund. This generosity of the Anglesey Compenea- tion Authority may be due to several causes, and the most likely one is that the members are suffering from a kind of "panic, caused by the decision of the Iniand Revenue Authorities in the cases of the Newry Arms and Penrhyn Arms, Holyhead. In the for- mer case the Committee offered L850, whila the Inland Revenue, on appeal, awarded £ 1585. It is common knowledge that a few years ago this house and license were oold under the hammer for L400, so that the Committee were not dealing in a mean way j when they offered J3850. In the case of the Penrhyn Arms, London Road, which was a remarkably profitable house, only J3800 was offered, but the Inland Revenue awarded I £1792. Of this Lord Btoston (as ground landlord) is to receive JE250, the tenant will I receive JB600, and the balance will go to the owner of the house, the last-named re- ceiving about seven years' purchase of the I extra rent owing to the existence of a li- cense. The great need seems to be a sound I basis of valuation for compensation. The movement which has been initiated for making a .presentation to the chairman of the Carnarvon County Coumo'l will, undoubtedly, be enthus:iastiioaJy suppcrted by men be ong- ing to both political parties in the county.
