HOME AND FASHION. A LETTER FOR MOTHERS AND I DAUGHTERS. BY MADAME ROSE. I A CHARMING SUMMER HAT. 1. '4,- I 41, ..1'. j 4 MUST confess that I am really charmed with the delightful new summer milli- nery, which is already making such a brave display in the show- roonw of the leading milliners. Nearly all the new models are pretty, most of them are exceedingly be- coming while, thousrb very smart and original, they are not sufficiently extreme in shape to have a bizarre or unpleasant effect. Best of all, there is such delightful variety in shape, style, and colour that one may consider all one's little idiosyncrasies in choice of a hat, and set off to advantage all one's best points without looking in the least extraordinary, dowdy, or out of date-an extremely unpleasant state of affairs, I think. In face of so many fascinating' chapeaux, it is distinctly difficult to pick out any particular models which, by reason of their extra smartness or charm, deserve special ) description. Still, I must say that in my pere- I grinations in the hat world I came across two or three chapeaux which I positively coveted, and which struck me as the acme of modishnees. One of these, I remember, was composed of rough straw in a lovely "burnt" shade, and was the very thing for wear with a dressy cos- I tume or pretty afternoon gown. The shape was the popular mushroom or "Lamballe," with the curving brim and rather high crown which are the characteristic features of this season's models. Round the crown was arranged a succession of Round the crown was arranged a succession of loops of beautifully soft taffetas ribbon, of the most bewitching shade of green. These loops completely encircled the crown except at the left side, where was carelessly arranged a huge cluster of cherries-flowers, fruit, and foliage all charmingly mingled together. This pretty hat was intended to be worn slightly tilted to the right, and well set upon the head in the present modish fashion, and was, I assure you, a very smart affair indeed.

SMART NEW BELTS. ROUND SHAPES AGAIN,—The fashionable belt of to-day is almost invariably round in shape, I and is beautifully boned and fitted, the folds being cunningly arranged to give the effect of a carelessly-twisted ribbon-ceinture. As regards the materials of which up-to-date waistbands are made, soft satin, panne, chiffon, and even tulle are all employed for the purpose, as well as, in many cases, the material of which the gown is fashioned. In the case of satin or panne belts there in quite a rage for black, even when the accompanying gown is of white or the most deli- cate soft shades, the sharp note of sable telling admirably against the pale background, and giving an effect of exaggerated slimnesa to the waist. A new idea which is being much exploited by several of the smartest dressmakers ie to sup- press the belt entirely, and replace it by two or three plain bands of braid or fancy gaJon. The material of the gown is lightly gathered beneath these bands, and has the appearance of being strapped down and held in place by them. We shall probably see more of this idea as the season J advances, for it is a fashion which is exceedingly becoming to the slender type of woman.

A USEFUL OVERALL APRON. F08 DOMESTIC OCCASIONS.—Most of us, T think, are contemplating a plunge into the wild exertions of spring cleaning, and are looking for- ward with no particular pleasure to a month of really hard work. Still the result-a delightfully fresh and dainty home—fully repays the labour involved, to say nothing of the many surprises one meets in the way of carefully-laid-by and totaliy-forgotten treasures. But to turn to the spring cleaning itself. First of all, one requires a really serviceable apron, which can be worn over a decent frock so as completely to protedt it. No one likes to spring-clean in a costume suggestive of Sairey Gamp, but if a nice neat dress is worn without a very big apron the result is irremediable disaster. Good patterns are easily f i. obtainable nowadays, and a nice smart overall can be run together in a surprisingly short time with the help of a machine, at about half the cost of a ready-made article. I would suggest as a material for the purpose a pretty dainty print, which will wash and even boil without injury. Why should one choose a dingy dark design? It requires washing- just as often as something prettier, and really one wants to look as attract- ive as one can even when spring cleaning. As for shape, I should advise a nicely shaped shoulder yoke, lined with the same material to keep it from pulling, and firmly machined round the edges. On to this yoke the apron should be gathered with a fair amount of fulness, the seams being well gored to provide additional width at the hem. The sleeves should be of a modified bishop shape, and should be set into neat little cuffs at the wrist. A plain belt, fasten- ing in front with a button, should be provided of the same material, though the apron may be worn loose or belted at pleasure.

For the third time, last Saturday, at Ban- gor, Holyhead and, the Llandudno Amateurs met in the final tie of the North Wales Senior Amateur Cup Competitiion. The weather was wretched, a driving rain falling throughout the match. In spite of this, however, so great was the interest in the ga-rue that all records in the matter of attendance on the Bangor ground were broken, the "gate" realising over B46, and this notwithstanding the fact that scores got into the field, and scores more on to the grand stand with payment. Had all paid the takings would have been considerably over £50. The Holyhead team was unchanged, but Charley Roberts' injury in the previous match prevented his inclusion in the Llandudno team on Saturday, and Johnny Williams took his position, Welsh playing centre forward, and Davlid Griffith playing outside right. I may as well say at once that each of the three men named were .failures in the positions assigned to them, and that consequently the whole team was disorganised. Besides, the quarrelling of the previous Wednesday's match seemed to have left its marks on all the Amateurs, none of whom on Saturday played with the splendid dash and promptitude of previous occasions. Holyhead lost the toss, and a forward piss by Welsh sent the ball well into Holyhead terri- tory. But Griffith could not catch it, and it went behind. Jacob Williams headed the goal kick 'back, and a. spell of mid-field play was suddenly ended by a brilliant run by Hodg- kiss and Welsh on the touch line, Hodgkiss being rougia'iy handled by Conlan, who finally forced the dangerous little fellow to shoot wide. W. T. Jones, the Holyhead skipper, sent a throw well up field, and Bogue got pos- session, but Welsh dashed' at him, robbed him, and shot straight into goal, Collier clearing coolly. Soon after, Holyhead had a free kick in mid-field, but Parry shot behind. Holy- head now exerted a fearful pressure on the Amateurs' goal, and the defence was extremely groggy, but managed somehow to keep their goal intact until a foul against Holyhead relieved the terrific pressure. The Anglesey men were soon back, and H. Taylor dropped in a splendid shot, whic'h Johnny Williams kicked, almost off the goal-line, into touch; and from the throw Rowlands flashed the ball past the upright- Lunt sent the goal-kick to mid-field. The Holyhead captain da gibed up to meet it, but missed the ball, and in an instant ^elsh had pounced on it. He was in front of Oollier, and on the point of shooting, when Ellis rushed across and at the critical moment kicked into touch. A dangerous attack on t2ie Holyhead goal developed from an immediately •ensuing throw, ,but despera/te though wiild in kicking by Parry and Conlan kept the Ama- teurs' at bay, and finally cleared them out, and, Pearson missing his kick, H. Roberts ran right through and pve to Rowlands. Lunt crashed rougthly into the Holyhead centre, bmt failed tio stop !him. Johnny Williams, however, came to the rescue, and sent the ball far up thie field. Welsh dashed onward, but was tripped by Bogue, and Johnny Willhams, \n aKS<TT?-Yi- at'> the mark by inches. TI W,llha™s beaded the goal kick back, and Biookes Evans tested Collier with a beau- y, but Collier was guite safe. A long return ,7 Johnny Williams dropped in front of Col- lier, ,but Oriffith headed behind. Then H. Roberts dashed away oil his own, beatring Fsarson in the easiest fashion, and finishing' up with a long shot, which went wide. A nice bit of mrd-field play Iby Jacob elicited dbeers, and he passed to Brookes Evans, who iheiad«d wide. Again !H. Roberts mastered Pearson and dashed on. but was fouled by 'Lunt. Taylor crashed the free kick straight tÏntp goal, whence Jimmy Williams kicked clear. Tricky play by Welsh made a. nice opening for the Amateurs, but Ellis stopped the rush beautifully, and in a moment Bogue shot swiftly past the Holyhead goal. A mo- ment later Bogue got in a glorious overhead shot, which by sheer good, luck crashed against Williams, and was sent into touch, and Bogue, capturing the throw, gave to Taylor, who s!bot behind. The timidity of the Llandudno forwards had by now become a subject for the jeers of the crowd,for they bunked the Holyhead backs most palpably, and thus lost many fine chances made for them by the untiring Jacob Williams and George Davies. Another furious assault bv Holyhead was ended by Bogue shooting wide. Brookes Evans, after nice finessing, gavejHoag- kiss a beautiful pass, and the little terrier flashed off, beating all opponents, a.id finish- ing up with a perfect .middle, which Ellis kicked away before it reached Collier. In a trice Holyhead broke through the Amateurs' defence, and Taylor sent in a beautiful daisy cutter, which Jimmy Jones kicked away off the goal line. Hodgki&s and Brookes Evans once more got away, and were attaining a dangerous position when Conlan foukd Hodg. kiss, W. T. Jones clearing the free kick from the goal mouth. Then the Anglesey men put. trice Holyhead broke through the Amateurs' goal, Edwards, Taylor, and Bogue all shoot- ing wide. Still raging swiftly in front of |Jimmy Williams, ik>gue passed 'O Brown. L; YA SKJ bill at O R'. lin' men from both sides hashed' at O.B., but quite unflurried he took deliberate aim and safely netted the ball amid a hurri- cane of cheers five minutes before half-time. Holyhead, 1; Llandudno, 0. The score was unchanged at the interval, though during the preceding five minute- both goals were very furiously attacked. In the second half the Anglesey team played with increased das5* and wnfidence, every movement tending towards their opponents' goal. They indulged in no fancy play. and never waited for the haJJ to come tc theui They went for it, thinking nothing of running half the length of the field to meet it. The Amateurs seemed ti,red, Pearson especially cutting a poor figure, while as before tlheir forwards, many of them made a speciality of funking, and of waiting'for the ball. In con- sequence the pressurfc on the defence was terri- fic, and Johnny Williams several times kicked back to Jimmy Williams, and once sent in so tamely that Jimmy had barely leached the ball before O.B. crashed on -top of him, but fortunately for the Amateurs O.B. sent wide. Suddenly Welslh, Brookes Evans, and Hodg- kiss put in one of the most beautiful little passing runs conceivable, and in an instant the inherent weakness of the apparently powerful Holyhead defence was exposed, for they mould do nothing to stop those neat little touches from one to the other of the trio, and a goal seemed imminent when Welsh was given offside, not a yard from Collier. It was a beautiful little run, and ought to have showed the Amateurs the proper method of playing against Holyhead. But fhey did not see the point, and consequently Holyhead again as- sumed the upper ihand," and ,tb,e pressure on the Amateurs' goal was terrific and incessant. Suddenly Johnny Williams went to his own position at centre forward1, Welsh playing •back. The effect was astounding. The do- minance of the Holyhead team was at once shattered, and their defence knocked all to pieces. The fury of the Amateurs' attack was simply (terrific, and all hands were called to the pump of the Holyhead defence. I BOARDING OUT ORDER. — Mr Thomas I Rowlands moved that the Board adopt the I (Boardmg Out Order of the 25th November. 1870. He did so not only for the children's ) sake, but also for that of society in general. I (Brought up in the atmosphere of the work- house, they were utterly ignorant of the lov- ing care so necessary to children, and their na- ture became hard and unfeeling. If brought up with respectable people, who would interest I themselves in their future welfare, they would 'become more useful and valuable members of I societv.—In replv to Mr Thomas, the Clerk ex- plained that the Board had no right without I first applying to the Local Government Bbard for permission to board the children with any- one but their parents, li the Act was adopted, a committee would have to be formed to carry I it out, and a medical officer would be in a position to demand a fee for attending the j children in cases of illness.—Dr Clay pointed out that the Local Government ¡Boatid had al- ready consented to their application to board I children with their relatives.—(Mrs Elias, in seconding the motion, held it would result i beneficially to the children.—Mr J. THE MODISHNESS OF MALTESE LACE. A DAINTY TRIMMING.—As I think I have already told you, lace of all kinds .will be enormously worn this season, both in the shape of entire gowns and as a trimming for blouses, frocks, and even hats. Among the most fashionable varieties must be reckoned that favourite of our grand- mothers' days—Maltese; a lace which has long languished in undeserved neglect, and for which & great vogue is promised. So popular has this beautiful web already become that many of the smartest dressmakers are turning out lovely white gowns of which the entire bodice is made of Maltese lace, lightly strapped with bands of silk of the material of which the skirt is made. As you know, the majority of Maltese laces are very open in design, so that to gain the best result the dentelle must be mounted over one or more thicknesses of chiffon. Charming effects are produced by lining a deep ivory lace with the purest white chiffon, the lace shewing up against its white foundation with all the beauty of carved

ABOUT THE NEW PARASOLS. SOME NOVELTIES.—As the days lengthen and the sunshine becomes very appreciable we begin to think it is almost time to consider the im- portant question of sunshades. This year there are several novelties in the parasol world, some of them very pretty, others more original thah beautiful. Among the former must be placed the charming new linen sunshades, for which a veritable furore is prophesied as summer ad- vances. These are made of rather coarse linen in white or ivorv shades, and are adorned witk enormous bunches of flowers cut out of chintz, applique to the linen, and edged with coarse buttonholing or a minute line of black velvet bebe ribbon. All sorta of fruits, flowers, and foliage are used for the purpose, but the favoup- ite blooms of the moment are apple and almond blossom, lilac, wisteria, and roses; while the most fashionable fruit decorations are bunches of strawberries, cherries, or apples, cunningly in- termingled with their own foliage and blossom. Another very smart sunshade, of a more dressy type, much affected by fashionable women, is made of Shantung silk, either dyed or in its natu- ral shade. These parasols are very suggestive of a glorified Chinese umbrella, for they are made with sixteen spokes instead of the regulation eight, with gold-tipped ends, and are farnished with gorgeously-carved ivory handles of Chinese workmanship. As regards colour, cinnamon- brown, Japanese blue, and a beautiful green, as well as the natural tones, are the favourite shades for the purpose. Many of the more ex- pensive models are beautified with lovely Orien- tal embroideries, worked in rich, soft shades, and arranged in flat bands running round the sun- shade. Of the more conventional type of dressy parasol, the favourite examples this year are made of gros-grain or taffetas silk, and are adorned with two or three rows of full frills, pinked, scalloped, or ruched at the edge.

A PRETTY KEYBOARD COVER. CAM OF THE PIANO.—Most of U8 who are lucky enough to possess a good piano value that possession highly, and are anxious to protect it from any possible deterioration from damp or dust. It ia an excellent plan completely to cover the keyboard with a strip of flannel or wadded silk, which absolutely ensures the cleanli- ness of the keys, and prevents any swelling or discoloration from damp. This strip should be left on even when the piano is open, and should be thoroughly aired before the fire each day. As 'in most households the piano forma part of the I drawing-room furniture, the protecting etrij; should be as pretty and dainty as possible, so that it is a positive addition to the room rather than an eyesore. Frenchwomen are exceedingly clever at devising charming affairs of the kind, many of their covers being real works of art. I would suggest for the purpose a strip of fine white cloth, on which should be traced some pretty design, which might be worked in silks which tone with the colour scheme of the room. After the embroidery is finished and pressed, the strip should be lined with wadded silk and finished with an edging of pretty cord. A cover of this description, I might suggest, would be an unusual and most acceptable present for a musical friend.

ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS. MIRANDA." — Hand embroidery will be enormously used on the best lingerie blouses this year. You can obtain suitable designs ready for tracing from any good fancywork shop. After stamping, the leaves, flowers, &c., should be carefully padded before working.

I should advise my readers to make a thorough search among their family powessions, when they will probably be rewarded by the discovery of treasure trove in the shape of a lovely piece of Maltese lace, which may be splendidly utili&ed this year.
